Their findings help coaches and athletes interpret the results of testing using the StrikeMate. So far (after approximately 100 weeks of regular use) it has shown itself to be reliable, accurate and durable. As you would expect, the goal of some Martial Artists has been to endeavour to break the machine. The device has, so far, shown no sign of yielding to this onslaught. The readings are clear and simple and the results seem consistent. It is a great piece of equipment; we also use it with our students at our Academy as a retention tool. boxing by don cogswell This year’s trip to Canas- tota, my third, for the Hall of Fame inductions weekend, continued to add texture and depth in experiencing one of boxing’s principal convergences. The dazzle of being immersed in so many of boxing’s notables does fade but the rewards of repeated visits with friends and associates deepen to center stage. Doing a little business also helps. The Random House Dictionary, unabridged, second edition, defines appetizer as “any small portion that stimulates a desire for more or that indicates more is to follow.” An opportunity to meet fifties contender Rocky Jones, courtesy of former Chester heavyweight Jack Mer- cadante and Philly historian Chuck Hasson, was up to scratch in meeting that definition. (I had flown into Philadelphia from the West Coast, planning on driving north with these two notables, to Canastota.) Rocky lives in a primarily African American neighborhood that was once predominately Italian American. The house Jack Mercadante grew up in is a stone’s throw from Rocky’s. Throughout our hour visit on his stoop, passerby’s continuously asked Rocky if everything was all right. I felt privileged with his repeated mantra that everything was just fine. (Jones lives a short drive from Leiperville, where we passed, in homage, the site of Baron Dougherty’s Colonial Hotel.) Among the many comments of Rock’s experiences, both in the ring and the gyms, the two bouts with Roland LaStarza loomed large. Rocky, essentially a lightheavy, fought heavyweights throughout his career. LaStarza was in line for a title shot, and a big favorite when he fought Jones, but was upset over 10. -

0955658 Biomechanical assessment and determinants of punching in boxers Seth Lenetsky PhD A thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 2018 School of Sport and Recreation I 0955658 Abstract Punching is a fundamental human movement that is the defining action of many combat sports, most of all boxing where it is the primary method of attack. This thesis investigated the biomechanics and determinants of punching to answer the question, “What defines effective punching in boxing?” The first chapter of the thesis expanded on these themes, as well as identifies current gaps in the literature relating to the analysis of punching in boxing. Chapter two was a narrative review of methods used to assess impact kinetics and the contributors to impact kinetics in combat sports. The third chapter was a narrative review on effective mass, an impact variable of interest in the literature. The chapter focused on defining the variable and the methods proposed to maximise effective mass. The review found that effective mass was the inertial contribution of a fighter to impact. Additionally, the review found that double peak muscle activation is currently the only process proposed in the literature to increase effective mass. There is a potential gap in the literature regarding continued force application by the lower body during impact. Chapter four, a qualitative study of experienced boxing coaches exploring their views on effective punching performance. The results of the study are in agreement with Chapter two in that the lower body’s contribution was key to producing an effective punch. -

John Muhs Hometown Hero?: Te Detroit Reaction to Joe Louis When heavyweight boxers Joe Louis and Max Schmeling squared of in Yankee Stadium on the evening of June 22, 1938, the stakes were high. New York had become a mecca for boxing enthusiasts, and 70,000 fans packed Yankee Stadium to make the fght the frst million- dollar gate since Louis defeated Max Baer in 1935. In attendance were former boxing champs Jack Johnson, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, and James J. Braddock. Also in the stadium that night were celebrities like Louis Armstrong, Gary Cooper, Duke Ellington, Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, United States Attorney General Homertraces Cummings, and one of President Roosevelt’s sons. Despite the presence of the glitterati, the crowd was a smorgasbord of race and class. Te lower classes, including most of the 20,000 blacks in attendance, occupied the bleachers and upper-level seats, while the big shots and well-to-do appeared closer in. Hundreds more who couldn’t get a ticket sat atop roofops beyond centerfeld. Across the country, an estimated seventy million listeners, almost as many as those who listened to President Roosevelt’s formal speeches, gathered around radios to listen to the broadcast. METHODS: Elite male amateur boxers (n=15) from the Korean national team participated in the study. Weight categories of the par- ticipants were light fly, fly, bantam, light, light welter, welter, middle, and light heavy. This boxing-specific training program was designed to improve strength and power, and punching power during pre-season for elite boxers. Boxing-specific training program was composed of three parts; power circuit training, tubing and ball training, and boxing power shuttle-run. The specific fitness such as strength and power and punch power were evaluated before, at the mid-way (8-week), and after the training for all the study participants. RESULTS: As for maximum strength, there were significant improvements in bench press and squat between pre- and post-training. Both the absolute and relative strength of trunk flexion and extension were improved in the post-training compared to the pre-training. Right and left isokinetic power were also improved at the post-training compared to the pre-training. Punch power for facial straight and hook attacks showed significant improvement at the post-training compared to pre-training. -
