Message from

Principal...

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” - Eleanor Roosevelt.

Our institution has consistently maintained an exemplary academic record with the incessant and tireless efforts of our highly motivated, vibrant and learned team. The inclination towards excellence in research is the greatest asset of our institution.

Our focus is holistic development of students and motivating them to become a life- long learner. We at SIES are also committed to enhance and hone the potential of our human resources by encouraging them to participate in various training programmes organized within the institute as well as by other organisations.

Conservation of available resources and sustainable development is the need of the hour. In this direction our college has planned to undertake an important initiative by adoption of green technology.

The changing complexity of business environment has necessitated developing close links between industry and academia. Our institution through its placement cell is actively involved in building a strong workforce and continue to deliver the industry individuals who are ready to face all the challenges placed in front of them. All round development of student is of utmost importance for us as teachers and guides in our institution.

Letter from the Student Editor…

“ Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.”

This is exactly what this issue of Spectrum is to us, the team. With the team handed over the responsibility of managing two years issue, delivering a variety to our readers was our primary concern. With only a few team meets and a complete revamp of the hierarchical structure, we had a strenuous task to come up with some brilliant ideas and suggestions.

This year, the „College Press‟ activities grew leaps and bounds as we were able to cover all the extra-curricular activities, cultural activities and tests, the highlights of which is published in this issue. „Grapevine‟ and „Shout box‟ were discontinued, however, we have showcased the creativity of our students in this issue.

Spectrum, this year does have a new look with regards to the layout and format compared to the previous issues. We hope that as reader you will be able to feel the breath of freshness as you commence reading. We hope that you love reading it as much as we loved putting it together for you.

All this would not have been possible without the constant support and encouragement of our beloved teachers, especially Dr. K. S. Usha, Ms. Vijaya Sunder, Ms. Sreelakshmi G, Ms. Manasi Shah and Mr. Abhijit Bhosale. I would also take this opportunity to thank our principal, Dr. Kinnarry Thakkar for providing us with this opportunity to nurture our talent when we were in a cocoon, now that has transformed to a butterfly.

We also express gratitude to all those, whose articles, sketches and photographs have bought life to this magazine. Last but not the least, we profusely thank each and every one who has helped us to bring out this edition.

We sincerely hope that the magazine makes for a good read. HAPPY READING! Aishwarya Iyer

DISHA - The Annual Career Fair

For a better tomorrow, SIES College of Commerce and Economics, an institute of Mumbai university, conducted a talent research and career counseling festival on 9th and 10th September in the college premises. Students from various branches of faculty showed great enthusiasm and participated in large number to avail the opportunity. Many eminent speakers took time from their busy schedules to motivate the teenagers of the institute. The students listened in rapped attention to the suggestions given by these eminent speakers. It emerged as a boon to many of us who were directionless about the course we wanted to pursue after graduation. The feather in the cap was the talent research where the students were enabled to show their inner talents. We really wondered that there was so much within us and how we failed to nip them in the bud. The two-day festival taught us that life is not a well. It is a vast ocean and we are just drops in it. We have to explore a lot. The seminars and the workshops conducted by the college authorities opened our eyes to new horizons. We learnt a lot and probably some of them might also have started research browsing through the net for their future. The active participation of the students showed that they had matured and was stepping into a new threshold of life. This is just the beginning. It is not the attitude but the aptitude of each one of us to do something. Every individual is different and all of us have the spark. It‟s just the time to ignite and move forward.

The event comprising two days of fun, learning, exploring and analyzing was an eye opener for the youngsters. They had a deep impact on the students and the programme left an indelible mark in their lives.

FANTASIES

Fantasies, the intercollegiate festival organised by the students of SIESCE, was held on 18th, 19th and 20th of January 2016. The preparations for the same had already begun from the month of June 2015.This year; the organisers chose a non-conventional theme: Reminiscence; an effort to go back to memorable days of childhood which are usually glorified as the best days of one‟s life. The three days were awaited by all the buzzing volunteers who had put all their mind and heart to make it bigger and better.

Day 1 of the festival „Fantasies‟ began with great enthusiasm and joy. The day began with the prize distribution and felicitation of the rankers and achievers of different streams of study available in the college. This was followed by declaring Fantasies open by our chief guest along with our principal Dr. Kinnarry Thakkar and conveyor Neelima Diwakar. A lot of events were planned by the „Events‟ department which was divided into the categories of literary arts, fine arts, rhapsody, sports, performing arts and IT. Out of the many events that were conducted, one that caught the eye of many participants was Snakes and Ladders. A real life snakes and ladder board was recreated with people moving along it with the roll of dice. Computer games like Need for Speed, Counter Strike and FIFA saw a flood of gamers eagerly waiting to compete with one another. The fine arts category tested the creativity by bringing in a variety of events, each having a twist of its own. Spectators were swayed by the next-gen designs in Mehendi, Heena Art, and Rangoli, which were made of flowers. The quad area of the college

52 was also occupied holding the events „Act to Impact‟ and „WTF- What the Foot‟. With about 6 teams participating for the former event, each team depicted a social cause through their street plays. The latter withheld a huge crowd by showing of their freestyle football skills by a face-off which was judged by Archis Patil and Arish Ansari with which the day 1 of fest came to an end.

Day 2 saw the same vigour, enthusiasm and excitement in the crowd as day 1. It started of which one of most famous event „Crunch the Munch‟; a challenge for all the foodies. „Ring Master‟ was another event that has been repeatedly used over the years. This was followed by Blind man‟s buff, Uno Slam, FPL and Glam Up which were room events. Meanwhile, the stage hosted the event „Fame Game‟ which acted as a platform for showcase of varying talents among individuals and groups which included group dances, mimicry, taekwondo stunts and many more. A new addition to events was „Vocalorde‟ which was basically beat boxing judged by Karan Oberoi, Sudanshu Pandey and Danny Marshall. „SWAG- Steppers with a Groove‟ saw an overflowing participation of 10 teams which was judged by the crew of Rohan Rokhade. The evening welcomed a crowd of about three thousand people waiting for the event of „Double Treble‟ the highlight of the day i.e. the war of the DJs. With face-off between about 15 DJs, the event gave a gala time to both the organisers and visitors, unfortunately, the day had to end leaving behind lots of memories, videos and photographs.

With just one more day left for the fest, the third day of Fantasies began with the annual day celebrations in Shamukananda Hall. The first competition was „Tribute to the Legends‟, a dance battle between troops who paying tributes to the various artist in the past few decades which included Hema Malini, Micheal Jackson, Rajnikant and Helen which were portrayed beautifully. „Vogue Vendetta‟ followed Tribute to the Legends, the fashion show event with the themes of Disney, Pirates of the Carribean, Game of Thrones, Super Heroes and Super Villains. This event was judged by Urvashi Rautela, Rajneesh Duggal, Rohit Khandelwal, Rohit Verma and Santoshi Shetty. With an amazing style, walk, make up, appearance and clothing, all the groups captured the eyes of viewers. However, out of all the groups that participated, the group with the theme Pirates of the Carribean won it. With all the competitions coming to an end, it was time for the most awaited rock band event, Thunderstruck, which had two bands playing: Pangea, a Mumbai based band, who specialized in „Progressive Metal‟ and Aswekeepsearching, a band which has its origin in Ahmedabad, played ambient and instrumental music. The people left the auditorium feeling pleased and energized, having attended arguably the most memorable gig in the start of the year. With Thunderstruck, the three day festival came to and end. The efforts of each and every volunteer and organiser made it possible to recreate a three day extravaganza taking you back to your childhood, rightfully describing the theme, Reminiscence.

THUNDERSTRUCK 9.0

In an era permeated with events majorly affiliated with mainstream dance music, SIES College of Commerce and Economics offers its audience a chance to live the rock with one of the most prodigious musicales in the city - Thunderstruck. The 9-year long event serves as the headlining event of the college's cultural festival - Fantasies. The night of January 20, 2016 saw a gargantuan crowd headbang to 2 hours of untimitigated musical dexterity at the long-established Shanmukhananda Hall. The ninth edition of the event was graced by the presence of two of the most vivifying local bands blessed with immense musical knowledge and countless fleets of admirers - Aswekeepsearching and Pangea. 53

Since, both the bands have inclined towards turning up with instrumental sets at live shows, the organizing department was highly skeptical about the reactions of those who had exultantly assembled to witness the gig. All their grievances found their way out of their heads as the post-rock maestros Aswekeepsearching took charge of the stage. "What's up, SIES?", asserted the guitarist, Uddipan Sarmah; the hall replied with a thunderous ovation. Several troupes of passionate fans quickly occupied the area nearest to the stage. Performances by bassist Bob Alex and drummer Gautam Deb largely contributed towards spreading an ethereal ambiance all over the auditorium. Without a doubt, keyboardist/guitarist Shubham Gurung's energetic stage prescence managed to raise the audience's eyebrows. In addition to these, a cameo by Coshish's Shrikant Sreenivasan altered the set fashioning it into an absolute stunner. Up next were prog-metal giants - Pangea. At his second act at Thunderstruck, guitarist Akshay Rajpurohit undeniably succeeded in keeping the crowd banqueted through all the cheeky taunts and witty one-liners at regular intervals. Other band members who had played at the fest in the past were Krishna Jhaveri (bass) and Jai Row Kavi (drums), who unleashed tremendous quotients of charisma and madness on stage. Not considering these, guitarists Shadab and Kuber bolstered the show owing to their respective individual parts. "If anyone here wants to dance with us on the stage, you're invited”, said Rajpurohit and what followed was something that words cannot describe. The drum stick hit the stand and up went countless number of fingers. The guitarists joined the brawl and thus, began the party. The stage was packed with a copious horde of admirers, busy dancing to the tunes of 'Epson Printer'. Forgetting all their intricacies for a couple of hours on an uncustomary Wednesday night, the spectators added life and soul to the occasion. Thunderstruck 9.0 wouldn't have been possible without the dedicated efforts embodied by the organising team commendably led by Ashwin Salian and Kiran Manche. Summarizing everything, the event successfully managed to conclude the festival in impeccable fashion. GOVIND NAIR FYBMS

EDIT TECHRazz - The Unrevealed Secrets of Technology

Edit V3.0, an intercollegiate departmental fest initiated by the students of BSc IT of SIES College of Commerce and Economics was held on 18th December, 2015. As the name suggests, the 3rd version of EDIT was about upgrading it to a much higher level than ever before. This year the theme was TECHRazz - the unrevealed secrets of technology. The theme name is self-explanatory. The team tried to incorporate this theme in all the events by keeping at least one element hidden which they revealed when the event began. In the previous year, EDIT was a great success, and thus, this time also the organizers had made an attempt to make it even more grand and eclectic. As said above, last year‟s EDIT was a huge success as around 3500 students were in the college campus enjoying themselves and the team felt very proud on knowing that the foot count in the campus on the day of EDIT was approx. 5000. And they felt very proud to announce that 40+ had colleges participated and the strength of participants was 700 on paper. It was a great accomplishment as they had achieved most of their goals and had set a new level. And being a single day TECH fest, it was so efficacious. The fest consists of various events falling under 4 categories, namely: Lab, Non Lab, Classroom and Fillers. Even if it‟s a Tech Fest, the organizing committee conducted various events for other stream students also without limiting it to just IT students because the main motto for conducting this fest was to empower the minds of youngsters and not only IT minds. We conducted 23 events in a day.

The events were conducted in the suitable venues such as IT Labs and Creative Corner (well known as 54

CC).

This was all about the fest and the events ahead we have given you a small glimpse of what happened on day EDIT V3.0. We began your day with inauguration ceremony by lighting a lamp by our Respected Vice Principal for Self Finance Course Dr. NINA ROY CHOUDHURY, Vice Principal for Aided Course Dr. SARASWATHY S, Vice Principal for Junior College Dr. VANDANA, and our esteemed Guest of Honor Mr. Javed Khan & Ms Asha Nair. With great pleasure and honor we would like to give a small introduction of our both judges. Starting with Mr Javed Khan was „Entertainment K Liye Kuch Bhi Karega‟ Season 3, 1st Runner Up in Finals and won Mega Entertainer of The Year in „Entertainment K Liye Kuch Bhi Karega‟ Season3, India‟s Got Talent Semi Finalist, Choreographed Reality and Tv Shows like DID (Dance India Dance) And D3. Also, he won more than 70+ Intercollegiate Prizes during College Time. Mumbai‟s Talent Hunt, Qualified in Top 10 Contestant Ffom all Over Mumbai. And our second judge was Ms. Asha Nair; she is a gold medalist for 3 successive years at national level for singing and currently is a singing teacher at one of the schools in Powai.

When the inauguration ceremony was going on, simultaneously the events had begun in Lab. After the ceremony everyone got back to work and the flow of events began as per schedule. Then we asked Javed Sir and Asha Ma‟am to take their places as judges for one of the most attractive event which was X Factor which as conducted in CC. Anyone who has even a slightest skill in any section of dance, music, drama were most welcomed for this event. And let me tell you all, it was a treat for the spectators‟ eyes to watch all the participants perform. “Few of the performances were mind blowing and left me back with goose bumps on my hand” said Asha Ma‟am. This was just about one event in the same way other events also were a huge successful. When these major events were going on in CC and Labs there were few fillers going on in campus. We had a big Snakes & Ladder board on which everyone could play with 3D dice and coins. Other game which we had to entertain the crowd in campus was Ring Master well known as WIRE BUZZ from Mr Bean‟s Show. All the participants were given 3 chances. We had few jamming sessions as well in which the crowd had to assemble in the quad. Looking at the huge crowd assembled in campus and considering the great response which we got for X Factor our event‟s head on the spot conducted a Talent hunt around. This was open for intra and inter college students. During this event, took place a FACE OFF or you can call it a Battle of Dance between 5 Bboyers, then a lyrical performance, few contemporary performances and Beat Boxers were also there hidden in crowd.

All our enthusiastic faculty of various streams along with our IT dept. also participated in various events and also won many prizes. Whole day passed by with a massive crowd in college campus actively participating in various events, out-door as well as in-door. The day which began so vibrantly ended at 7pm. After a hectic day of all ups and downs it was time for some music and fun for our dear hardworking volunteers who had handled a huge crowd of around 5000 without any disturbance following all code of conducts. At the end we would like to thank all the respected principal‟s for granting us the permission to organize this fest at such a grand level, certainly the absence of Mrs. Kinnary Thakkar our principle was experienced. As we all know the back bone is the most important part of our body the entire body functions depends on the spine we are metaphorically referring to our fest faculty in-charger Ms. Raina Baji and Mr. Ajay Gupta as they were the once on whom our entire committee was depended and they were always there with us while stepping on each difficult stone. And last but not the least our very own Head of Information Technology Department Ms. Bhavini Savla. She also played one of the most important roles in making this fest a grand success. She is that person who had a solution to all our problems and had that faith in us that we can do it. She always encouraged us throughout our journey. Whenever we thought of giving up, she was there to support us and pushed us ahead to take this fest to a pinnacle of success. And how can we forget the non-teaching staff. A big thank you to them as well for being with us right from day 1 of preparation till the day of the fest. They were present to

55 make sure that all our requirements are met. With lot of gratitude in heart towards all the principles, teaching and non-teaching staff and our dear volunteers we would like to end this year‟s EDIT journey here. And give all our best wishes for next year‟s committee to take EDIT to a much higher level than ever before.

This event was judged by famous television, film and theatre actor Sameer Soni along with Chirag Desai and Tashveen Sehgal who are television artists. Sameer Soni said that all the participants were doing a great job by performing beautifully with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm. All these painstaking efforts by organising committees and volunteers had paid off with great success for Finova. THE TECH-NO MAN

Enough of superheroes with powers like super strength, super fast or super elasticity; with the changing world, we also need our super heroes to change. I agree that “old is gold”, but I think even new isn‟t less than platinum.

History is the proof that whenever the pot of cruelty and crime is filled to the brim, a new super hero has emerged. But today, we have a quite eligible and diligent police force to do that stuff. So, what‟s the problem? Why do we need a super hero in this world where technology is doing wonders?

Well, the problem is technology itself. Where phones are getting smarter, people are getting dumber. We spend hours and hours texting someone for no reason. We are wasting so much of our valuable time on social media sites, forgetting that there are many other things to do rather than just getting glued to our phones. When everyone else was busy posting their selfies and changing their profile pictures, no one knew that a new super hero was in emergence. Ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you, the TECH-NO MAN.

As the name suggests, Tech-no man is a superhero who prevents children and adults from falling in the trap of over usage of their smart phones, computers, and laptops. Tech-no man helps people who are addicted to technology, or are tech-savvy. Our superhero has a meter which is known as the tech- meter. The tech-meter is a device through which Tech-no man comes to know about the usage of tech devices of every person. Whenever a child is addicted to his smart phone, tech no man appears and explains the child about the problems he/she shall face with its continuance. Harmful radiations, eye sight problems, hearing problems, and the list goes on. People need to understand that there is world outside to explore. Coming back to reality, how we wish that we really had a tech-no man. Actually, we do.

We all have a tech-no man inside us whom we all have suppressed. Let‟s make a better world where people actually like us rather than just liking our photos. Update your status, but not only on Facebook and WhatsApp. Technology to a certain extent is a boon, so let‟s not make it a curse. Yes, technology is quick, but, think my friends, does it really take the place of a cup of coffee with a family member or friend? Hopefully, it doesn‟t.

THE ALPENGLOW

“I want you to be the most ethereal piece of wood. Subsisting the droughts, the storms and the vicissitudes, you must win at life. Envious will be the souls of those who would lack that aura, that charisma, that shine. To see those buds to have bloomed into the most exquisite passel of flowers and to witness those leaves glow brighter than the stars must be a dream of a million beings. But, one day, you must go. Away from the wilderness, carved into a dexterous work of art, you must then cement a place in the hearts of the richest. What you shouldn‟t fail to remember is that any aim which allows you

59 to not be better than the best is futile, in the truest sense of the term. Shoulds must not exist; only musts must. For only then you can say that you have won at life.”

“But, what about the alpenglow, my lord? Why would you not let the sky smile at me? Why do you want me to breathe in the midst of greats, while the last five words have never affected my ambitions? Absurd are those who prefer a blend of extravagance and unmitigated restlessness over mediocrity accompanied with smithereens of joy. All I have around me is all I have. So let me cherish the alpenglow, my lord. I will then win at life.”

THE FUTURE OF INDIA

The future of INDIA lays on the hands of the young generation i.e the IGNITED MINDS of the nation. The youths of the nation have to join their hands together and should work in the unity to achieve the aim of DEVELOPED INDIA. As late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has always said that small aim is a crime, our aim towards the development of our nation is not small and easy to achieve. It is something that needs unity and contribution of every individual youth of the country.

We would first and foremost change the education system of the country to put more emphasis on actual education and educating kids in a way that they can think for themselves and inculcate a sense of responsibility that is responsible for most of the things a person does in his future.

Better educated people will also be able to choose better leaders. India is at a stage where it needs better leaders and better politics.

Corruption is a big barrier towards the development of our nation. Though almost everyone has their own solution to it, it isn‟t something that will go away with the introduction of a bill, or implementing certain ideas. It‟ll be a slow process because it‟s built within the system. We don‟t have a problem with cheating. We consider it absolutely fine. That is where we are lacking.

Education will also make them responsible citizens, so most of the other trivial problems will be taken care of. Put huge emphasis on education and increase the standard of education. The current system is archaic and needs a total overhaul.

Secondly, we will create a better environment that encourages entrepreneurship and helps people to start businesses.

Third, we‟ll try to create a social environment that encourages risks and allows kids to be inquisitive.

Fourth, there is a very apparent lack of interest in making our country a better place. There needs to be a lot more accountability on the individual level.

The time is not so far for our country in becoming a DEVELOPED NATION. Remember India is a country with the population of 121 crores out of which 30 crores are the youths of the nation, if every

60 youth takes a step towards the development then India will not only become a developed nation but also a super power.

LET THERE BE ROCK

If music was a person, everyone would have had a beloved friend. Talking about myself, I am a complete music buff, especially when it comes to the ultimate genre of Rock. When you add Rock; you add charisma, you add soul. You add life. The energizing instruments, those fervent set of words and the electrifying vocals are all simply matchless. It‟s all about the peerless aura that old school rock had managed to originate. And it is only because of the astounding impact of legendary rock artists like Queen and Black Sabbath that even today, after almost half a century, people embrace the genre. Now, because there are quite a number of sub-categories to the style, it‟s got different types of fans too. Most people would sport a scornful face if they were to know that Iron Maiden and Coldplayboth occupy some space in my all-time favorite list. It‟s because of the difference in their mannerisms, their distinctive qualities. Inside Rock, you‟ve got hard rock, grunge, alternative, progressive, soft, classic, punk, heavy metal and the list goes on and on. Sometimes, while listening to a shuffled rock-related playlist, I feel like being born in the wrong generation. Back in the 70s, not a single soul used to flaunt expensive music-based gadgets. People used to turn up at concerts and dance crazy at invigorating musicales. Those times must have been way cooler, unquestionably. As far as I remember, „In the End‟ byLinkin Park marked the beginning of my rock music exploration. I can very well recall those days when they used to be the only people I would listen to. Green Day, Rise Against and 30 Seconds To Marswere the ones that followed up. Then came illustrious long-established clusters like Pink Floyd and Guns N Roses.Consorting them were modern alternative rock bands like Imagine Dragons and Arctic Monkeys. But, the band that I would rate above majority of these has to be Nirvana. Only seven years of music, 20 years since the closure and yet, their legacy unchanged. Kurt Cobain must have been a gem of an entertainer. Obviously, I have not listened to every other track brought in by these artists but the ones that I am aware of have certainly managed to blow me away. Actually, sometimes, just a single masterpiece is enough for you to be taken aback. „Stairway To Heaven‟ by Led Zeppelin and „Dream On‟ by Aerosmith perfectly fit into such a category. Speaking about India, I wouldn't say we've got lack of talent; I would instead emphasize on the unalloyed truth i.e. lack of scope. There are millions of Vishal Dadlani fans all across the nation, but not even half of them possess the knowledge about his electro-rock band,Pentagram. Even then, budding progressive bands like Coshish and Paradigm Shift have begun to create some magic, dexterity which may prove to be instrumental in the upbringing of the genre in our country. Having spoken about all this, I would also like to clarify that Rock is not the only genre in my music crate. I‟ve got a few time-honored Hindi classics in my library as well. I would like to conclude with one of the most cherished one-liners affiliated with the genre - let there be rock.

INDIAN CULTURE

Culture is a way of living. India's languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food, and customs differ from place to place within the country. India is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, collectively known as Indian religions. India has 29 states and 7 union territories, according to the World Health Organization. There is no official language in India, according to a Gujarat High Court ruling in 2010. Many people living in India also write in Devanagari script. In fact, it is a misconception that the majority of people in India speak Hindi. Though many people speak Hindi in India, 59 percent of India residents speak other regional languages.

The Tamilian Culture

Tamil culture is the culture of the people from Tamil Nadu. Tamil is expressed in language, literature, music, dance, theatre, martial arts, paintings, etc. Tamilian culture is of considerable antiquity, and is recognised as a classical language by the government of India.

Various martial arts including Kuttu Varisai, Varma Kalai, Silambam, Adithada, Malyutham and Kalarippayattu, are practiced in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The most important form of Tamil painting is Tanjore painting, which originated in Thanjavur in the 9th century. The painting's base is made of cloth and coated with zinc oxide, over which the image is painted using dyes; it is then decorated with semi-precious stones, as well as silver or gold thread. A style which is related in origin, but which exhibits significant differences in execution, is used for painting muralson temple walls; the most notable example are the murals on the Kutal Azhakar and Meenakshi temples of , the Brihadeeswarar temple of Tanjore.

Saga Agastya is the Father of Tamil Literature

Rameshwaram temples, tanjore temples, meenakshi temples are famous and well-known.

There are other temples also which are unique and has a deep connection with the Tamil Nadu culture, out of which Sri Ranganathaswamy temple (srirangam temple) in Srirangam is one of them.

SRIRANGAM

Srirangam is an island and part of the city of Tiruchirapalli. Srirangam is called as Thiruvarangam in Tamil. Srirangam Island is bounded by Kaveri River and is home to a significant population of Srivaishnavites i.e the followers of Lord Vishnu.

Srirangam temple can be considered as the biggest functioning Hindu temple in the world,as it covers an area of about 631,000 sq meters. The temple is enormous in size. It has seven prakaras or enclosures. These enclosures are formed by thick and huge rampart walls which run round the sanctum. There are 21 magnificent towers in all prakaras providing a unique sight to any visitor.

The Srirangam temple complex is composed of 7 concentric walled sections and 21 towers gopuram. The gopuram of the temple is called the Rajagopuram and is 236 feet (72 m) tall, the tallest in Asia.

64

Legend has it...

Sriranga Mahathmiyam is the compilation of religious accounts of the temple which detail the origins of its greatness.

According to it, lord Rama himself an of lord Vishnu worshipped the idol for a very long time and when he returned victoriously from lanka he gave the idol to vibhishana brother of ravana as a token of appreciation for helping him defeat his brother ravana. There was acondition that he could not set the idol on earth and if he did then it will stay there permanently.Vibishana took this idol and while traveling towards Sri Lanka, came upon the banks of the river Kaveri. He placed the idol on banks of river Kaveri, while an utsavam was in progress. When the utsavam got over, the Lord refused to move as he loved the place (Srirangam). When Vibhishana requested him to come along with him, the lord refused but promised to bless Vibhishana by always facing South (the direction of Sri Lanka, home to Vibhishana) Hence it is that the deity (in a reclining posture) faces South.

History says:

Then Chola kings Dharmavarcholan and Killivalavan developed the shrine into the big temple seen now. They built the basic foundations and main building

FYBAF MODERN PATRIOTISM

Patriotism – Showing great love towards one’s country.

That‟s what the word „patriotism‟ means, or actually there‟s no exact definition of patriotism. Didn‟t we learn in our history lectures of high school that many of our freedom fighters fought against the English rule to achieve free India? Why did they do so? Just because they did not have any other work to do so, or they just wanted to past their time? No, it‟s their freedom struggle, their efforts that I am able to write this article and you are able to read this.

Here‟s where the secret of “PATRIOTISM” lies! The sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Satyagrah of Gandhiji, leadership of Subashchandra Bose or Home rule league by Annie Besant; everything that we learnt in that couple of years are some of the finest examples of “PATRIOTISM” in the world.

But I am not going to talk about the typical subject “PATRIOTISM”. Instead, I will talk about „MODERN PATRIOTISM‟. Now what exactly is that? The question arises! According to Mark Twain, “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves.” The 21st Century Generation is a very new breed and has with it very fresh and innovative blood running in its veins.

India is an emerging country. The warm-blooded youth, if wants to express „Patriotism‟ has to follow all the laws and perform their respective duties in the favor of our country. The revolution in several fields 65 of science, technology, and politics, social, cultural and so on, proves that India is the upcoming super- nation. That‟s what I say that just singing the Patriotic song will not express your patriotism.

Instead of that, they should perform their respective duties, co-operate with society, maintain peace and harmony, spread brotherhood, and be an active participant of constitutional activities, social and cultural activities and also in beneficial governmental policies. We the citizens, undoubtedly, enjoy the right given by the Constitution of India but at the same time we should exercise the duties and always co- operated with government. Be a watchdog to the today‟s politicians; make sure you get proper info of every event. “Arrey….yeh sab ke liye time kaha…?” If you really love your country then no forces will prevent you to perform the above activities. You can and you will have to manage time in the service of nation. Think progressive and participate in the initiatives like „Swachh Bharat Mission‟, „Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao‟, „Green Mumbai, Clean Mumbai‟, etc. Get involved in NGO‟s activities which will all result in welfare of the people.

“Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.”- Adlai Stevenson.

Needless to say that express affection towards your country is „PATRIOTISM‟ but when you do all your duties and favor progressive activities for your country it is called „MODERN PATRIOTISM‟. Country needs your work and your dedication to value all the sacrifices that our ancestors gave to make India free.

“We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense.”- Barack Obama.

POEMS

FOUR WORDS Four words, Live & Let Live. What someone else does should not bother you unless it‟s somehow affecting you directly. It‟s their life to live, their choices to make, and their experiences to have. You can make their lives happier, or you can make it miserable. If someone is brave enough to be who they are & stand by their individuality, you'd be a coward to condemn them. It takes a lot to be "different". It takes more courage than you could possibly imagine. So unless you've walked a mile in someone's shoes, dont judge them. No, I take that back. Even if you've walked a mile in their shoes, don't judge them. It it bothers you, walk a mile in the other direction and dont associate yourself with it. It is as simple as that. Live & Let Live!

AAKANSHA BINDRA SYBAF

I dip my feet in the lake and feel not even a ripple. I stare at my reflection in its still clear waters and see myself peering back. It captures no shadow no light, Like a blank mirror that bounces back every soul it ever faces. And I can hear no splash, no sound at all but the whoosh of the willows that whisper me the tale of this dead lake. They dance in sync with the wind chanting that this lake is the baby mother sea lost and its wails I would never hear. For it rings on a plain beyond humanity's reach, merging with the bellows of pounds of infant flesh abandoned before it could even form. Yet if I opened not only my ears but every inch of my body to nature's tune, I would hear the faint tears every raindrop sheds as it accepts its fate to conjoin with the heap of liquid corpses that form the lake body. Almost an hour of pondering later, I spot a little fish swimming on the lines and am reminded of the wild flowers that grow on graveyards. In that moment I know, the living change; the dead stay. But the cycle of life carries on.

Shiny plastic covered books lined on shelves in flashy bookstores are mere corpses, it is the sidestreets lined with ancient used books where you go soul searching. White crisp pages are a mere vessel of your thoughts; it is on thin yellow pages where your soul dances with all the ones that have settled

67 along the threads of its spine. The inked text tells you a story spun in words, but a legend is sung on paper through every particle of dust. And when you leaf through a book this old, all frail and barely holding it together, you can't help imagining every story it borrowed from a reader‟s heart bursting to get through to the world beyond. To you.

I truly believe we all hold within a key to the every question of the universe. Unlock your souls and be free. Can you touch the earthen soil in your father's calloused palms, hear the sea waves in the sweat beads trailing from your mother's forehead?

Can you float on the clouds of a baby's skin, feel a light breeze in the laughter of your friends? Can you understand the dessert sand that scorches a stranger's feet or the tornado the ones closest to you rein underneath their fingernails?

Do you wake up to the sunrise in your lover's smile, gaze at the night sky in their dark eyes, Run your fingers through the forest in their hair, and taste the thunder on their chapped wet lips? So look in the mirror and see the centre of all galaxies staring back at you.

Sacrifices are a part, for victory Better or worse, I have to go through Proudly I can sleep forever, By protecting Mother, from the devils.

Few tears would drop, in my memory 68

Though infinite smiles would cover the pain. My choice can bring a bit change, Being fearless many lives can live.

Bringing in heavenly peace to the nation, Gives a warmth of being a reason. For my Mother, I would stand up always, Though it would cost my life.

Giving away my life, is not easy Family that awaits me, makes me weak Though love for my Mother India, Empowers all other relations in my heart.

SHRUTHI SADANANDAN FYBCOM PATRIOTISM

'Patriotism' in INDIA is just a small word that cannot be explained by an article. It is a gift of all the sacrifices done by our great leaders to set our country free. Patriotism is a sense of pride and emotions towards one's country. Today we are breathing the air of freedom because of all our true and great patriots. INDIA is not just a mass of land. She stands up high for its national aims and aspirations, customs and conventions, for its high ideals of morality and religion, for its way of life, beliefs and philosophies. In short, INDIA means different culture and civilization. It is our priority today to fight against terrorism. Innocent lives are being targeted by such terrorist attacks. Though our Indian army fights hard to put an end to this terror attacks, it is also our prime duty to protect INDIA and safeguard it from all the sought of problems. No sacrifice is too great in the service of our beloved motherland!!!!
