Our institution has consistently maintained an exemplary academic record with the incessant and tireless efforts of our highly motivated, vibrant and learned team. The inclination towards excellence in research is the greatest asset of our institution. Our focus is holistic development of students and motivating them to become a life- long learner. We at SIES are also committed to enhance and hone the potential of our human resources by encouraging them to participate in various training programmes organized within the institute as well as by other organisations. Conservation of available resources and sustainable development is the need of the hour. In this direction our college has planned to undertake an important initiative by adoption of green technology. The changing complexity of business environment has necessitated developing close links between industry and academia. Our institution through its placement cell is actively involved in building a strong workforce and continue to deliver the industry individuals who are ready to face all the challenges placed in front of them. All round development of student is of utmost importance for us as teachers and guides in our institution. Dr. Kinnarry Thakkar Letter from the Student Editor… “ Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” This is exactly what this issue of Spectrum is to us, the team. With the team handed over the responsibility of managing two years issue, delivering a variety to our readers was our primary concern. With only a few team meets and a complete revamp of the hierarchical structure, we had a strenuous task to come up with some brilliant ideas and suggestions. This year, the „College Press‟ activities grew leaps and bounds as we were able to cover all the extra-curricular activities, cultural activities and tests, the highlights of which is published in this issue. „Grapevine‟ and „Shout box‟ were discontinued, however, we have showcased the creativity of our students in this issue. Spectrum, this year does have a new look with regards to the layout and format compared to the previous issues. We hope that as reader you will be able to feel the breath of freshness as you commence reading. We hope that you love reading it as much as we loved putting it together for you. All this would not have been possible without the constant support and encouragement of our beloved teachers, especially Dr. K. S. Usha, Ms. Vijaya Sunder, Ms. Sreelakshmi G, Ms. Manasi Shah and Mr. Abhijit Bhosale. I would also take this opportunity to thank our principal, Dr. Kinnarry Thakkar for providing us with this opportunity to nurture our talent when we were in a cocoon, now that has transformed to a butterfly. We also express gratitude to all those, whose articles, sketches and photographs have bought life to this magazine. Last but not the least, we profusely thank each and every one who has helped us to bring out this edition. We sincerely hope that the magazine makes for a good read. HAPPY READING! • Temples Within Chennai City
Temples within Chennai City 1 As the famous Tamil poetess AUVAYYAR says in Her Legendary presentation of cluster of hymns “Kovil illatha ooril kudi irukkathe” Please don’t reside in a place where there is no temple. The Statement of our forefathers is sacrosanct because the temple indicates that the community is graced by the presence of God and that its Citizens form a moral community. A Community identifies and is identified by others with its temples. It has been our ancient endavour to lead a pious life with full dedication to the services of the Lord. Sri Paramacharya of Kanchi Mutt has repeatedly called devotees and stressed the importance of taking care of old temples - which requires enormous power of men and money - instead of constructing new temples in cities. As you may be aware, there are thousands of temples in dilapidated condition and requires constant maintenance work to be undertaken. There are many shiva lingas of ancient temples found under trees and also while digging. In ancient times, these lingas were 'Moolavars' of temples built by several kings. After conquests and devastations by foreign invaders, Indian temples were destructed and the sacred deities were thrown away and many were broken. The left out deities are found later. Of them, some are unidentified. Those who attempt to construct temples for gods are freed from the sins of a thousand births. Those who think of building a temple in their minds are freed from the sins of a hundred births. Those who contribute to the cause of a temple are bestowed with divine virtues and blessings.

  • Role of Cultural Heritage, Fairs and Festivals of Tourism Promotion in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and India
International Journal of Management, Technology And Engineering ISSN NO : 2249-7455 ROLE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, FAIRS AND FESTIVALS OF TOURISM PROMOTION IN MADURAI, TAMIL NADU AND INDIA C.M.Prakash Guest Faculty, Research Scholar, Centre for Tourism and Hotel Management, Madurai Kamaraj University, Palkalai Nagar, Madurai – 625 021. ABSTRACT: Tourism promotes National Integration and International understanding. It encourages preservation of monuments, heritage properties and eco-sanctuaries, helps survival of traditional art forms, crafts and culture. It has achieved rapid strides due to its capacity to earn foreign exchange, generate employment opportunities and inculcate a sense of fraternity in the minds of people. The economic liberalization, open-sky aviation policy, luxury cruises, improved surface transport, tourist trains, increased business travel and e-booking facilities have created a paradigm change in the tourism sector. From a mere service industry, tourism has transformed into a major revenue generating industry. For the development of Tourism in Tamil Nadu, the Department of Tourism and Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) were formed. The Department of Tourism concentrates on dissemination of Tourism information and implementation of tourist infrastructure schemes for the benefit of the tourists. The TTDC on the other hand was assigned the job of conducting package tours, 3 running of Hotels (Hotel Tamil Nadu) and maintaining of boat houses. Over the years, the Tourism Industry in Tamil Nadu has registered a good growth. Tourism development is an important catalyst for a rapidly growing economy like India. Its primary importance lies in the contribution to employment, income generation and foreign exchange inflow. Tourism is defined as travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family or business, medical, adventure, sports, education and research, usually for a limited duration.
