Music is my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a pastor, and I love my calling, but music is buried deep in the core of my soul and makes the rest of living worthwhile. I hear music in everything. Windshield wipers set my tempo, the hum of the refrigerator gives me the pitch. The cadence of your speaking sounds like a melody line to my ears. When asked to explain my faith in God and what anchors it for me, the answer is found in music. Scientifically, music is just sound waves emitted from an instrument that hit your tympanic membrane in your ear, which cause it to vibrate. Those vibrations send signals to your brain and your brain lights up. But that scientific explanation of how sound (and therefore music) works doesn’t explain for me how music can make you feel. Music changes the ambience and feel of a room, of a conversation. Imagine a movie without a soundtrack. How sad! Music, and its unexplainable depth of feeling are evidence of God, God’s creative powers, and the depth of God’s love for us.

Karen Lee (my lovely counterpart in musical leadership in this congregation) and I were discussing music and worship over lunch the other day. We talked about how we plan music - hymns, songs, offering pieces and so on - to go with the readings, preaching themes, and liturgical seasons. And yet somehow, with all that intentionality, God takes the music we prepare and makes it greater, more connected, and with deeper meaning that we could have ever intended for it on our own.

Music is the thing that takes worship from a simple prayer service to another level of emotional connectivity with God’s creative presence and spirit. However, it doesn’t happen alone. When we join together in singing to God, we are participating in God’s creative movement around and through us. It makes music exponentially more meaningful to do it together. Now, you may be saying, “That’s all well and fine, pastor. But I don’t sing and the people around me a grateful that I don’t.” Hey - I think maybe you should give it a try, even just tentatively. You’d be surprised at how much joy can be found, even just humming along with a large group of people. So sing a new song to God, and see what happens! With God’s spirit, there is always a great surprise to be had.

Peace to you,

Pastor Gretchen Mertes

Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church 7 WELCOMING WISDOM On Sunday, August 21 the Caring Community Team honored members of our congregation who are 80 years and older. It was a lovely luncheon. Music from the 40’s and 50’s was performed by Karen Lee, Denny Palmason, and Eric Johnson. Niels Running provided tough trivia on the Pulitzer prizes and Oscar-winning movies on that era. A great time was had by all. A highlight of the afternoon was Orv Anderson (age 93) singing O Danny Boy and bringing the room to tears.

GOLDEN GARDENS On Wednesday August 10, a lovely smattering of our church family gathered at Golden Gardens to enjoy the evening and roast s’mores. Huge thanks to the Prentice family for grabbing the firepit and providing firewood and frivolity! The weather was unbelievable, and the s’mores were tasty. Let’s do it again soon!

Pilgrimage Meeting Report

On Sunday, August 7, about 14 people gathered to talk about taking a pilgrimage trip next summer. This is an excellent opportunity to live into some of our congregational core values - transformational spirituality and faith in action. The outcomes of this kind of a trip would ideally be: healing, connecting with God, challenge, adventure, learning, understanding, empathy, vulnerability, and creating community. There was a hope from everyone that we include some kind of service learning or volunteer element to the trip. We explored all kinds of ideas geographically from Mt. Kilamanjaro in Africa Dear Pastor Kathy, to Willapa Bay right here in Washington. Of Welcome back to Our Redeemer’s later this the group present, the following were the month. Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church 11 Exciting News for the Fall Bible Study

The Bethel Bible Study, is coming to Our Redeemer’s! The study is a two-year program—20 lessons from the Old Testament and 20 lessons from the New Testament. You can commit to one year at a time, if you desire. You will get a course binder complete with pictures that will help you visualize the lessons. There is homework, if you commit yourself to it, that individualizes this study.

As part of our emphasis on growing spirituality, I can’t think of a better way than to come to know Jesus through the Word. In Manna and Mercy, we learned to read Scripture through the lens of Jesus. In this study, we use the phrase, “THINK HEBREW”. The overall theme is: Blest to Be a Blessing (Genesis 12:15) The authors of the series describe it in this way: “The mission of the Bethel Series is to lead members of a local church into disciplined study of Scripture in such a way that they encounter the Living Christ.”

There is a cost of $52.50 a year, One-Year-Old Testament (20 lessons), the second year, NewTestament (20 lessons). That comes to under $3.00/lesson. Scholarships are available to cover materials. It is hoped fervently that if it is a burden you can’t take on, you will simply tell us, help will be provided.

When will it begin? Wednesday September 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the church library. If there is sufficient interest, I would very much like to offer this course not only to Wednesday morning folks, but to those who could attend on a week night. Please let me know if you would be interested in a weeknight class time.

Excited to begin this new series, Carolyn Swanson (happy to answer any questions) [email protected]

On September 27 @ 7PM, Theology on Tap will be hosted at Hale’s Ales (4301 Leary Way NW). The topic will be “Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian — what’s the difference?” Bring your questions and your friends. All are welcome and invited!
