A neo-Assyrian relief in the Weingreen Museum of Biblical Antiquities, Trinity College Dublin*a case study in artefact acquisition AMANDA KELLY* Classics Department, National University of Ireland, Galway [Accepted 7 September 2010. Published 14 October 2011.] Abstract The focus of this paper is a neo-Assyrian relief discovered in the Weingreen Museum of Biblical Antiquities at Trinity College Dublin (hereafter the Weingreen Museum). The shallow relief depicts a pictorial vignette of a kneeling genie, rendered in profile, facing a tree of life, on a horizon formed by a cuneiform border (WM 1189). Details surrounding the relief’s acquisition were completely unknown to Trinity College Dublin staff during 2008Á9. This investigation follows a paper trail which illuminates the circumstances behind its procurement and subsequent journey from Iraq to Dublin in the Victorian period. -

Jack Coughlin Collection Biographical Sketch Jack Coughlin is an artist of Irish-American heritage who is well known for his portraits of literary figures and musicians. His prints, drawings and watercolors have been exhibited widely across the United States and Europe. They are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington D.C., the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences in Virginia, the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts, the University of Colorado, the Philadelphia Free Public Library, Staedelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfort, Germany, the New University of Ulster, Coleraine, Northern Ireland and in several other important museum, university and library collections worldwide. -

AUTHOR: Maurice Riordan, B.A. (Cork) M.A. (Cork) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Brian John NUMBER OF Fll.GES: vi, 275 ii ABSTRACT Austin Clarke dedicated himself to the ideal of an independent Irish literature in English. This dedication had two principal consequences for his work: he developed a poetic style appropriate to expressing the Irish imagination, and he found inspiration in the matter of Ireland, in hex mythology and folklore, in her literary, artistic and __ religious traditions, and in the daily life of modern Ireland. The basic orientation of Clarke's work determines the twofold purpose of this thesis. It seeks to provide a clarifying background for his poetry, drama and fiction up to 1938; and, in examining the texts in their prope.r context, it seeks to reveal the permanent and universal aspects of his achievement. Clarke's early development in response to the shaping influence of the Irish Revival is examined in the opening chapter. His initial interest in heroic saga is considered, but, principally, the focus is on his effort to establish stylistic links between the Anglo-Irish and the Gaelic traditions, an effort that is seen to culminate with his adoption of assonantal verse as an essential element in his poetic technique. -

James Joyce and His Influences: William Faulkner and Anthony Burgess An abstract of a Dissertation by Maxine i!3urke July, Ll.981 Drake University Advisor: Dr. Grace Eckley The problem. James Joyce's Ulysses provides a basis for examining and analyzing the influence of Joyce on selected works of William Faulkner and Anthony Bur gess especially in regard to the major ideas and style, and pattern and motif. The works to be used, in addi tion to Ulysses, include Faulkner's "The Bear" in Go Down, Moses and Mosquitoes and Burgess' Nothing Like the Sun. For the purpose, then, of determining to what de gree Joyce has influenced other writers, the ideas and techniques that explain his influence such as his lingu istic innovations, his use of mythology, and his stream of-consciousness technique are discussed. Procedure. Research includes a careful study of each of the works to be used and an examination of var ious critics and their works for contributions to this influence study. The plan of analysis and presentation includes, then, a prefatory section of the dissertation which provides a general statement stating the thesis of this dissertation, some background material on Joyce and his Ulysses, and a summary of the material discussed in each chapter. Next are three chapters which explain Joyce's influence: an introduction to Joyce and Ulysses; Joyce and Faulkner; and Joyce and Burgess. Thus Chapter One, for the purpose of showing how Joyce influences other writers, discusses the ideas and techniques that explain his influences--such things as his linguistic innovations, his use of mythology, and his stream-of consciousness method. -

Their violence, publicity and tragedy are common themes that elicit a plethora of emotional responses throughout the world. However, the very intimate nature of this conflict creates a much more complex system of friends, foes and experiences for those involved. While the very heart of the Irish nationalist movement is founded on liberal and progressive concepts such as socialism and equality, the media associated with it sometimes promote tradition and conservatism, especially regarding gender. -

Transporting Rebellion: How the motorcar shaped the Rising By Dr Leanne Blaney As motorcars sped members of the Secret Military Council towards Liberty Hall on Easter Sunday, few could have imagined that their next motor journey would be by military lorry – when their bodies were taken for burial to Arbour Hill after their execution. However, one obvious certainty – even among the confusion of Easter Sunday – was that motor vehicles, specifically the car would play a pivotal role during the upcoming Rising. Historiography relating to the Easter Rising tends to focus on the personalities, places and politics involved in the rebellion. Yet, we can gain a new perspective on the Rising, when we choose to assess more mundane aspects of the uprising. Understanding the role played by the motorcar as the Irish Volunteers prepared for the Rising and the manner in which cars were utilised by the British authorities and Irish civilians caught up in the six days of fighting alongside the Volunteers, allows us to recognise how the car acted as an agent for change during the conflict. By 1916, motorcars had become an accepted mainstay of Irish life for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they were relatively familiar sights on Irish roads. Two years earlier, in April 1914, the Irish Local Government Board had estimated that 19,554 motorised vehicles (predominantly motorcars and motorcycles) were registered within Ireland.1 While the outbreak of the First World War did witness a reduction in the number of motor vehicles registered on Irish roads as motorists and motor fuel became scarce, motorcars remained relatively plentiful, especially around Dublin.
