This Newsletter will act as a Reference for UNSHkins and other rosarians and nurseries. The spreadsheet summary of Australian Rose Breeders and their registered progeny is chronologically arranged. Future Newsletters will include which nurseries carry the rose cultivars with details of nursery contact details. In the meantime, two nurseries in the UNSH geographical zone are Green E Roses in Galston and Mother Earth Nursery in Annangrove. Klaus and Brigitte Eckardt from Green E and Mark Massey from Mother Earth Nursery are UNSH members and carry publicised Australian Bred roses. There are other nurseries that carry them but do not include the Australian Breeders name nor identify that it is an Australian Bred rose. This comprehensive up to date list will aid members in their search. Armed with the name and breeder, they will be able to ‘Google search’ their desired rose. There are a number of reasons why the included reference material will be helpful. 1. The Australian Bred roses are specifically bred for the harsh climatic conditions of our country. Roses naturally occur in the wild in the Northern Hemisphere. Alister Clark, in particular sent out researchers to collect the hardiest roses with which he could cross. 2. It supports the concept ‘Buy Australian’ which helps our struggling nursery industry. 3. It helps you to be a part of Australian history, by planting collections and helping to keep alive the hard work of Australian rose breeders. 4. ‘Collections’ are fun and addictive! Tracking down plants for your garden. How to use this information? Print or save this document. Walk around your garden and highlight the names of the roses you have on the sheet. You will be amazed how many Australian Bred (AB)roses you have. You will then be able to exhibit them specifically on the UNSH Monthly Show Bench. Remember that these AB roses can also be shown under their own class. ie. Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Miniatures. This document has been written by Kate Stanley Dip.Teach, B.A.(Hist./Art, M.A. Anc.Hist) (UNSH Chair) and people are welcome to copy and use this material for your own purposes. '=The RSNSW Centenary 1913-2013 J.Oyston Process employed: 1. NRSA List of Australian Bred roses & Hybridists as a base. 2. Information added from 'Help Me Find 'Database. 3. All roses & details checked for Registration details in 'Modern Roses' Database (Registration dates used were from 'Modern Roses' Database preferably. If undetermined 'ROSA' Registry checked. 4. Primary sources eg. Rose Annuals -information added from articles and registrations. ONLY REGISTERED ROSES INCLUDED for manageability. Probable roses included with notes. Insufficient evidence discluded in the absence of Registration. It is important to note, that spelling errors in listing Rose Registration can make this process cumbersome or unclear with early /historical roses. All attributable dates are firstly from 'Modern Roses Database'; secondly from Primary Sources; thirdly Secondary Sources or lastly 'Help Me Find Database' for reference point. Most roses and breeders have been checked with all of these sources. "Help Me Find' Database is an excellent reference to determine bred /found rose country of origin and date when not elsewhere. As there is no differentiation in Modern Roses regarding whether the rose was hybridised or discovered/found/sport, there is no record included but in author's notes. Please refer to 'Help Me Find' Database for parent crosses or sport parent. Rose images may be found on NRSA List; 'rose.org list' (138 pages)This reference also has detailed information on roses eg perfume/growth habit; 'Help Me Find' Database ; Rose Nursery websites; Rose books under Rose Name or Code (capitals-synonym) Two rose nurseries that specialise in Australian Bred Roses in NSW are Green E Roses in Galston and Mother Earth Nursery in Annangrove. Green E Roses have a web page dedicated to Alister Clark roses that are difficult to find. They also carry Walsh, Riethmuller and Hains Roses. Please check for availability. Mother Earth carries a selection of Walsh & Millington & Alister Clark roses. They just have a brand new website: <www.motherearthnursery.com.au> They will be selling ORDERS ONLY bare rooted roses in Winter. A list of Australian Bred roses is available at the nursery for ordering. The owners of both nurseries are members of Upper North Shore & Hills Regional RS NSW.
