Seen from a contemporary perspective, the movement’s foremost concern was cultural resilience as a notion of national identity. Metabolism responded to the human and environmental catastrophe that followed the atomic bombing of Japan and vulnerability to natural disasters such as earthquakes, with architecture envisioning the complete transformation of Japan as a system of political, social, and physical structures into resilient spatial and organizational patterns adaptable to change. Projecting a utopia of resilience, Metabolism employed biological metaphors and recalled technoscientific images which, together with the vernacular, evoked the notion of a genetic architecture able to be recreated again and again. If it is impossible to eliminate the population density and the construction boom of large cities, Japan has developed a compensatory mechanism capable of making the negative sides of high density less evident. Reduction of space manifests itself in many elements of urban development: miniature residential buildings have proliferated, capsule-type hotels, gardens and tea houses have shrunk to extremely small sizes. The need for future cities to operate as adaptable complex systems has generated an interest in the self-organizing resilient city. The main aim of the study is to find ways of conceptualizing self-organizing the resilient city as an emerging field of research for urban design and architectural theory. Based on these assumptions, an integrated relationship between architecture and urban design are seen as potential catalysts for absorbing the uncertainty and disturbances of urban growth and preparing the structure, function, and identity of a city as a self-organizing system that can continuously and freely adapt to changes. The paper seeks to determine the role of architecture in urban design as a main key for facilitating a self-organizing system. A systematic theoretical research method was used to describe resilience theory and self-organizing systems within an adaptive cycle and hierarchical thinking across scales. The study then sought to identify the earliest point that architectural theory conceptualized future cities from the perspective of self-organizing systems. The Metabolism movement was chosen to provide a basis for the discussion of the study. Cities as self-organizing systems need to be considered through cross-scale interactions.

Sinclair University of Calgary + sinclairstudio inc., Calgary, Canada ABSTRACT: Japan is in many ways a mysterious society with a rich history and complex culture. Informed by longstanding traditions and deeply-rooted values, contemporary Japan struggles to chart paths forward while retaining strong threads binding yesterday to tomorrow. Modern planning, architecture and design in Japan, and perhaps most notably in its capital city of Tokyo, in many ways illuminates the tensions that exist between the authority of the past and the promise of the future. Inspired in part by pervasive spiritual paths, fundamentally Shintoism and Buddhism, design embraces notions of ephemerality, impermanence and non- attachment. It also characterizes the pursuit and acceptance of perfection through imperfection. Wabi-Sabi and similar approaches highlight a high degree of comfort with the uncertain, the flawed and the incomplete. That said, remarkable advances in high-technology and an aggressive uptake of digital media counter this acceptance of the indeterminate, both in social and physical spheres. People are increasingly connected and informed, yet ironically disconnected and unaware. While society writ-large is shaped by intense formal and informal expectations to conform (the nail the stands out gets hammered down), it also permits ample latitude for the proliferation of subcultures and the acceptance of the extraordinary. Metabolist Architecture, for example, demonstrated an unbridled openness to utopian vision, bold departures and iconic gestures. The present research, through meta-analysis of the literature, case studies and logical argumentation, critically examines the notions of ‘Japan-ness’ and ‘suchness’ in light of current turbulence and transformations.

    514 RE.Building Nakagin Capsule Tower and the Metabolist Movement Revisited ZHONGJIE LIN University of North Carolina at Charlotte INTRODUCTION In April 2007, a brief report on Architectural Re- cord’s online journal drew worldwide attention back to a building in Tokyo: Kisho Kurokawa’s Nakagin Capsule Tower will be demolished.1 This news as- tonished many readers because Nakagin building is not only an iconic work of Kurokawa and one of the masterpieces of postwar modern architec- ture in Japan, but more significantly, it represents a rare and arguably the finest built work resulting from the historic Metabolist movement. Completed in 1972, the building consists of two towers at elev- en and thirteen stories respectively as well as 144 capsules. Each capsule, in the size and shape of a shipping container, houses a residential unit that is clipped on the towers with flexible joints, showcas- ing the essential Metabolist idea of adaptability and replaceability.
