(Hans) de Kroon Institute for Water and Wetland Research Radboud University Nijmegen Date October 2013 SUMMARY In many terrestrial ecosystems in Western Europe today, top predators are absent (Terborgh et al., 1999). Since top predators are considered to be important for the structure of ecosystems and their biodiversity, the absence of such species might have large impacts on these systems. In this thesis I want to investigate how the absence of top predators has affected terrestrial ecosystem trophic structure and biodiversity. The focus on terrestrial ecosystems comes forth from the fact that the Eurasian wolf Canis lupus lupus is currently expanding its range throughout Western Europe (Chapron et al., 2003; Randi, 2011). Here, I investigate how species like the Eurasian wolf might affect our ecosystems when they spread further, and what the implications of these effects are for the management of our ecosystems and of the Eurasian wolf. Carnivores can be assigned the role of keystone species, where they create ecological boundaries that protect lesser competitors from exclusion (Miller et al., 2001). In this role of keystone species, carnivores are also capable of increasing plant biomass through their limiting effect on herbivore numbers, causing both plants and carnivores to flourish (Miller et al., 2001). -

Wayne5* Protection of populations comprising admixed genomes is a challenge under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which is regarded as the most powerful species protection legislation ever passed in the United States but lacks specific provisions for hybrids. The eastern wolf is a newly recognized wolf-like species that is highly admixed and inhabits the Great Lakes and eastern United States, a region previously thought to be included in the geographic Downloaded from range of only the gray wolf. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has argued that the presence of the eastern wolf, rather than the gray wolf, in this area is grounds for removing ESA protection (delisting) from the gray wolf across its geographic range. In contrast, the red wolf from the southeastern United States was one of the first species pro- tected under the ESA and was protected despite admixture with coyotes. We use whole-genome sequence data to demonstrate a lack of unique ancestry in eastern and red wolves that would not be expected if they represented long divergent North American lineages. -

Gray Wolf Populations in the Conterminous U.S. Wolves are apex predators on top of the food chain with no natural predators of their own. They play a critical role in maintaining the balance and structure of an ecological community. North American wolf numbers plummeted in the 1800’s and early 1900’s due to decreased availability of prey, habitat loss and in- creased extermination efforts to reduce predation on livestock and game animals. Gray wolves (Canis lupus) were listed as endan- gered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1974. Although wolves today occupy only a fraction of their historic range, conser- vation efforts have helped some populations to meet recovery goals. As we illustrate with a case study of the red wolf (Canis rufus) from the southeastern United States, this step is especially complex when the evolutionary history of the focal taxon is uncertain. The US Endangered Species Act (ESA) allows listing of species, subspecies, or Distinct Population Segments (DPSs) of vertebrates. Red wolves were listed as an endangered species in 1973, and their status remains precarious. Evidence for the persistence of Arabian Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) in the Ibex Reserve, Saudi Arabia and its preferred prey species by Torsten Wronski and William Macasero Abstract. Numbers of Arabian Wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) on the Arabian Peninsula are in de- cline and intact ecosystems in which large carnivores prey on larger mammals are virtually absent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Moreover, many canids roaming in the Kingdom are hybrids be- tween feral dogs and wolves. In this study we provide genetic evidence for the persistence of wolves in the Jebel Tuwaiq ecosystem (Ibex Reserve) in central Saudi Arabia and we provide in- formation on the preferred prey species of wolves in this protected area. Key words. Arabian wolf, Ibex Reserve, Saudi Arabia, prey species, hybridisation, feral dogs. Introduction The wolves of the Arabian Peninsula were formerly attributed to Canis lupus arabs Pokock, 1934 (NADER & BÜTTIKER 1980, GASPARETTI et al. 1985, NADER 1990, HARRISON & BATES 1991) but more recent publication consider these populations as synonymous with Canis lupus pallipes Sykes, 1831 described from Deccan in India (MECH & BOITANI 2004, WILSON & REEDER 2005). The Arabian Wolf on the Arabian Peninsula is in decline occupying ap- proximately 75% of its former range, with an estimated total number of 500 to 600 animals on the peninsula (MECH & BOITANI 2004). Detailed numbers for Saudi Arabia are not avail- able. Wolves are not protected in Saudi Arabia and are subject to heavy prosecution (MECH & BOITANI 2004, NCWCD 2007). The Cheetah in Africa (with four African subspecies A. j. jubatus (Southern Africa), A. j. raineyi (Eastern Africa), A. j. hecki (North-Western Africa), and A. j. soemmeringii (North-Eastern Africa)) is furthermore one of the four species of the Joint CITES-CMS African Carnivores Initiative (ACI) (CMS 2021). The Asiatic Cheetah (A. j. venaticus) is a subspecies considered under the CMS Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI; https://www.cms.int/cami/en/species) and subject of "Species-specific Measures" in the in the Pro- gramme of Work (2021-2026) for CAMI (annexed to Resolution 11.24 (Rev.COP13)). -
