Stagger Lanayru79 10/22/2016 3:51 PM

I recently declared on a friend's post that I had enough completionist gaming side projects that I wouldn't be getting anything new until FFXV. I lied. Before I delve into pursuing DKTCF's 200%, advanced difficulty settings in the Bayonettas, or PS3 Platinum Trophy pursuits, I want to check this out. (Plus, I was mean to Hidalgo yesterday, and he recommends this highly. :p)

Stagger 10/22/2016 4:23 PM Alright! I'm enjoying finding a variety of obstacles and paths that are blocked to me, like the one above here that I discovered the hard way. The mystery of the basic lab accident plot is cool. So far, so yood. Great music too.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 4:28 PM Not a talking boss! Whatever will I do? E Yeah! e 2 D

Nintendoer 10/22/2016 4:31 PM Notifs! Although I won't follow too closely, since I plan on getting this myself at some point.

...You know, like so many other games out there. So much to play, so little time...

E Yeah♥ e 3

Stagger 10/22/2016 4:49 PM I'll mark spoilers once I start making less obvious progress Nintenbroer. Pretty fun, nothing wildly off the formula from a gameplay standpoint yet ... rather rapid progression through item accessible navigation so far. I don't think my new drill will deal w/ this disturbing phenomenon that blocked my path a couple of comments ago though. E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 4:58 PM Ah, much better - progress to a second area map w/ two obvious hurdles to advancing in the first one. Make me backtrack! It adds a greater sense of exploration and achievement. This reminder feature is probably pretty helpful, although I've always taken pride in remembering where to go on my lonesome.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 5:07 PM Given the uncertain nature of reality established here, the appearance of this enemy type is creepy. Others lost in the accident? I also seem to have entered the classic jump higher to exit area prematurely by my exhaustive exploration protocol. :p

E Yeah! e 3 D Stagger 10/22/2016 5:19 PM Nah, there was a way back around. Area cased! Not much to find yet, but higher jumping seems near ...

Ooh, the mascot moment.

E Yeah♥ e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 5:28 PM Neat so far. Nothing ground breaking, but it's nice to have a de facto side scrolling Metroid to play. The story is much different, and while I wish these studios would occasionally really polish their visuals, this style fits. Time for a sandwich break ...

E Yeah! e 1 D

Ed 10/22/2016 5:51 PM In the same boat as our android companion over here, I'm hoping this pricey title goes on a nice sale around Christmas… Since Hidalgo might read this, yes, I'm still very interested in it.

Your review will keep me satisfied until then. Notify me, Captain!

E Yeah! e 2

Stagger 10/22/2016 6:28 PM Not that these low bit renderings aren't polished ... just seems awfully commonplace. These piles of bones keep getting bigger.

E Yeah♥ e 0 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 6:38 PM Welcome aboard of course br'er Ed. There seems to be an intentional glitchy look to certain things in an effort to augment the plot. I'll withhold judgement on whether one thing warrants the other. Having reached a second boss door, I figured I'd check all other possibilities. Jumping higher or freezing objects to elevate seems a very natural next step. E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 6:42 PM For the benefit of my Nerdly brethren, I'll start marking spoilers from here when it comes to bosses and major platforming developments. Let's see if this beast has a tougher stratagem to identify.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 7:03 PM ·Spoilers To be fair, both bosses have been neat to figure out. Using the platform became obvious in short order there, but it took a lot of discipline to maintain the balance of dodging and firing at the cowl weak point.

This is interesting! Not higher jumping eh? What does this mean? Curiouser and curiouser ... E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 7:15 PM ·Spoilers Oh that effect is cool! It's a bit like a stylized Ice Beam crossed w/ an infra- red scanning visor of sorts. Opens some interesting potential for well hidden pickups and strange navigation mechanics ...

Also, nice journal notes, or whatever these are. Deepen that mystery ...

E Yeah! e 1 D

Brandon 10/22/2016 7:27 PM More Metroid-like madness? Feed me the orange dots!

E Yeah! e 3

Stagger 10/22/2016 8:50 PM It's as close an homage as I've played yet. If there is a Chozo suit helmet nod like Teslagrad had, it would be fitting Weave.

In my typical fashion, upon reaching the third map sector, I promptly turned around and scoured the first two for familiarity and a pickup check. I found three of these fragments, like heart pieces of this game's health and weapon strength system. Fun times.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 9:12 PM ·Spoilers Axiom Verge is starting to put a huge smile on my face.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 10:18 PM ·Spoilers Third boss time! Joy ride getting here - great variety of music and environment. A quick trip to a fourth map sector for the jump upgrade, a mysteriously unavailable pickup that I tried everything to reach, and plenty of good fights later, further down the rabbit hole Trace goes.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 11:05 PM Plot delivered and an item obtained that solved some mysteries for me following an enjoyable triage process deciphering the best way to dismantle that massive fiend spoiled above ... this is is only somewhat strange. This game has a bit of the bizarre to it that puts TRON to shame. Digging it!

E Yeah!? e 2 D

Stagger 10/22/2016 11:11 PM ·Spoilers Hey! Now that I've been informed I'm on a planet, in this little nexus of new areas there is a surface! E Yeah! e 1 D

Hidalgo 10/22/2016 11:15 PM Really glad you are enjoying the game. I had a pretty good feeling you would though. The thing I love most about this game is the weapon variety. Its like the developers amped up metroid primes beam system to a whole nother level.

Also, how are you enjoying the glitch mechanic? It is incredibly fun to experiment with it on enemies and various other things.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Hidalgo 10/22/2016 11:16 PM Also, water under the bridge. I forgot about that whole ordeal anyways.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/23/2016 1:26 AM Glad to hear it Hidalgo. I was overbearing, could have made the counterpoint acting a lot less of a clod ...

It's really fun! Well put together. Almost too many weapons, especially if they fill this inventory ... as for that mechanic, it's being run with as expected to great effect. So many nifty solutions w/ the capabilities! E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/23/2016 1:29 AM ·Spoilers They cut off backtracking to the first two areas, and while I've discovered six (seven if you count the “relic” I was advised to stay out of but cleared out anyway), boss four is on the menu. I did encounter one passage for the drone that is just too tough for me. I'm hoping that thing sees some upgrades.

E Yeah! e 2 D

BARBARA 10/23/2016 8:48 AM barbiña no he provado el juego

E Yeah... e 0

Blake 10/23/2016 9:37 AM I'll keep up. Unlike ND and Ed, there's only a chance I'll pick this game up later.

E Yeah! e 1

Hidalgo 10/23/2016 10:13 AM You found a secret world? Those places are so creepy.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/23/2016 4:36 PM @Barbara: No hablo español, lo siento ...

It's repainted Metroid Blake. Basically up to snuff from a gameplay and design perspective ...

I liked it 'dalgus. This has a bit of that inexplicable, inscrutable Hyper Light Drifter style to it. Had to crash out for a couple hours before work after getting the next item, an old Samus standby, and fooling around w/ it on the cliffs of Kur.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Vessta 10/23/2016 8:17 PM Just got this game myself. Not as far in as you are yet but SOOOOOOO much fun so far. Also digging your "reviews" of this. You seem to be of the few people on miiverse that can actually speak in full sentences ;)

E Yeah! e 1 D

Vessta 10/23/2016 8:20 PM Also DKTCF? I thought you were talking about Donkey Kong but the initials are out of place.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/23/2016 8:37 PM Correct sir! I meant Tropical Freeze and had an inversion in the acronym. Thanks for the compliment. I do use the ellipsis often, but at least I punctuate my incomplete sentences correctly a guaranteed 95% of the time. :p As a retired journalist, it comes from an aversion to personal pronouns.

Much needed nap complete, back to the oddness ...

E Yeah! e 3 D

Elzonire 10/23/2016 9:35 PM Vessta: The thing about Stagger here is that even for a game you don't know about or have a particular liking for, his writing is worth getting notifications for.

Speaking of...

(On the note of ellipsis, I try not to use them very much, because it looks somewhat overdramatic, but I've not seen an issue with how you use them, Stagger.)

E Yeah! e 0

Stagger 10/23/2016 10:13 PM ·Spoilers Too kind Elzo-sama. Thank you.

After going wild grappling around in the upper reaches of Kur, I think it's time to backtrack. The extended drone launch capability I found up there helps fill remote map squares and get goodies, and even let me check out a part of this region. I'm excited to actually be able to get Trace over here. E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/23/2016 10:16 PM ·Spoilers Whoa! I could grapple in. Unexpected ride in progress! I hope this isn't where I was meant to go, as I'm a stickler for pouring over these kinds of games my first time through, meandering and seeking those 100% goals.

E Yeah!? e 1 D

Elzonire 10/23/2016 11:02 PM Precisely that. The only games where are don't bother with obsessive 100% is the Mario & Luigi series. Digging up beans and beating those minigames are evil incarnate.

E Yeah! e 1

Elzonire 10/23/2016 11:03 PM *I* Autocorrect, why must you be such a failure?

E Yeah! e 0

Stagger 10/23/2016 11:16 PM That's the joy, eh Elzo? These shrines that appear for pickups or new weapons are not quite as iconic as the Chozo statues, but still neat. The drone seems to have half as much health as Trace, so coupling my upgraded beef employing some better tactics, I was able to manage through the very tough finds I had skipped earlier. E Yeah! e 2 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 1:22 AM I've exhausted every avenue of exploration I can find except for what seemed the clear path forward in a seventh discovered area map. That was a very satisfying process! That's a lot of time in for halfway there on pickups. The best finds were a trio of very useful, powerful new weapons. I'm very sold on the progression so far. Axiom Verge competes quite well w/ metroid in that department.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 1:58 AM ·Spoilers The weird just got really heavy. Trace was seeing a double of himself, and Elsynova was not. His machine guardian and source of information, his very grip on reality, felt that Athetos' pathogen is starting to affect him, but urged him to carry on to Ophelia. Other voices are questioning his sanity and purpose. Good stuff. E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 2:08 AM ·Spoilers Boss number five ... bizarre doesn't begin to describe Chase feeling trapped as a flower fiend and fighting himself. *Elsenova* still has a reasonable story, but everything could flip around here plot wise.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 2:14 AM ·Spoilers That didn't feel good from the other side of the equation. For any spoiler readers not planning to play, Athetos supposedly converted this planet's people who were loyal to him into monstrosities to further his goals of spreading the Breach throughout actual reality. The pathogen killed all others. However, Chase started the tale in a disastrous experiment in New Mexico, on Earth. Plot twist time! E Yeah!? e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 2:23 AM ·Spoilers So Chase believes he is somehow Athetos, as he was called this by the scientific community when he crafted a paradigm shifting theory during his recuperation from the accident while broken and blind. Whether he is hallucinating the planet Sudra, has actually been brought there from the Breach, or some other interpretation of his reality is accurate is unknown.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 2:33 AM ·Spoilers Many strange things afoot, including the discovery of a second “Relic” area so far - but this one seems absolutely impenetrable, since I can only reach it as the drone and then get no further. I'll have to call it a night shortly. E Yeah! e 0 D

Hidalgo 10/24/2016 11:19 AM gotta get back to this game soon. You are already ahead of me!

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 12:09 PM ·Spoilers When I play something, I don't stop man. Benefits of semi-retirement ...

Usually when I find a pickup I can't reach, I have some idea of what kind of upgrade or item the game will provide to make it accessible. Despite a limited teleport ability Trace recently obtained, I'm pretty clueless on this one. Btw, translating the Notes reveals some intriguing plot elements. Cool stuff!

E Yeah! e 2 D Stagger 10/24/2016 12:20 PM ·Spoilers The fifth boss room denoted by red map squares was more a plot device than a battle, a role reversal and mind twist moment of being a helpless monster. This sixth one in Edin is opening in a strange fashion too.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 1:35 PM ·Spoilers Here's another mysterious one. Will the drone earn a higher jump? Hrrm ... in due time I guess. That boss room was just another plot device, and the Ruskala seem to have slightly different agendas. I have found another red section though, after the drama, and exploring is complete.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 1:38 PM ·Spoilers Yup, that's legit. E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 1:44 PM ·Spoilers Much like the fourth boss, that was just a case of having the right weapon and mild evasion. This is a twist I'm very enthused about! Axiom Verge has a lot of subtle tweaks to the Metroid item progression formula, keeping a veteran of these type of games like me just a little off balance.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 4:06 PM ·Spoilers I'm sure when I'm grinding for 100%, I'll find all kinds of things I missed, but right now, holding my save in what feels like a very late game area, I only have two pesky spots to investigate. This code is not what I was looking for in one of them! I wonder how many of these random Address scrambles there are? I was out of ideas over here, and was lucky it caught my eye. E Yeah!? e 0 D

Hidalgo 10/24/2016 4:26 PM Man I sure have a lot to look forward too.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 5:49 PM ·Spoilers You ought to stop reading these spoilers. :p While I have a few spots to investigate in the area where Trace obtains the Red Coat, I went ahead to the Breach elevator. It's a really cool scene w/ Elsenova when you show up w/ the gear to reach Athetos. Mini-boss here maybe? Might have a Megaman situation in progress ...

E Yeah♥ e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 6:14 PM ·Spoilers For a second time, fighting was optional en route here, as a clone of the first of Athetos boss servants popped up but had an unsealed door beyond it in the room. Part Trace's objection to slaughter, part the enemies here are brutal, I took the pacifist approach. ;) Big explanation from Athetos in progress ...

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 6:19 PM ·Spoilers Fun fight so far! Athetos had some compelling reasoning for his pathogen, but not good enough to sway Trace to aid him against the Rusalki.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 6:27 PM Solid, open-ended conclusion! By that, I mean a sequel from this one-man band could be in the offing. I'll not spoil the ending in these comments. I think I wound up a shade over 80% on items and 90% on the mapping, so I'll get right to the remedy of that insufficiency pending how the end game save works.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 6:29 PM Heh, three credits make for an awfully short viewing. Stats for my first trip through ...

E Yeah♥ e 2 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 7:20 PM ·Spoilers Oh wow! Clever way to hide a passcode! I've noticed when all else fails, if I try to Address scramble everything nearby, I usually find a solution. Something else just dawned on me. I've seen the Sudran writing once in game outside the Notes. When I find that again, if its 12 characters, I'll be doing some translating. E Yeah!? e 1 D

Hidalgo 10/24/2016 7:36 PM Woah wait, this game was all done by thomas happ!?

E Yeah!? e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 8:16 PM ·Spoilers It apears so Hidalgo. The credits were one screen. Here's an oddball find - a note from Trace and his wheelchair! The cycle of death and rebirth the Rusalki put him through in the Sudran egg chambers must have been going on for quite some time.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Hidalgo 10/24/2016 9:10 PM What happens if you never die all throughout the game? E Yeah!? e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 9:19 PM ·Spoilers You speed run. :p You'd just miss a small part of a subplot, but I think it would fill you in somehow.

The finds are getting rarer and tougher now. My two big concerns:

1) There are pickups in those glitched looking worlds off the map. I went and revisited one to see if there was an indicator when Trace is near it. There is. That helps.

2) Elsenova replaced a certain conveyance when she moved.

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 9:26 PM ·Spoilers By doing so, I'm flummoxed as to how to reach the area it helped you reach w/out that transport. Thanks to the yellow dot showing here though, I know that's not a problem. What is? No purple dot. Thanks to the pickup lead to by action in the screen above, I've deduced the former means all items cleared, while the latter lavender one means map cleared. See that one missing corner at the top? Ugh. E Yeah... e 0 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 10:18 PM Getting close! I feel like almost the entirety of what I'm missing inthe map department would involve taking a loss to the final boss, since it would then save the room as entered. As for the items, they almost have to be in those hidden glitched areas off the map. One more strong push ...

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 10:43 PM ·Spoilers Victories abound! It took great ingenuity to combine Trace's capabilities and reach the height necessary, but the map is complete where I lost my transport to story event. This is just as exciting though. I'm not sure it will translate on the screen shot, but see the disturbance in the image? Comparing the health bar ought to make it apparent. One of those secret areas is near! E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/24/2016 10:46 PM Cheah!

E Yeah! e 0 D

Hidalgo 10/25/2016 12:21 AM Man you plowed through this game in 2 days max. Makes me want to apologize for suggesting such a short game to play.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/25/2016 1:20 AM Song of the Deep took me two days and I think about six less hours of file time to 100%. Teslagrad was a three day affair iirc. LBW two and change ... of course I've replayed that last one six times since heh, and I intend to replay the other three in question for years to come. I'm a hermit Dalgus Maximus. This is how I stay out of trouble. Great recommendation! Loved it - I'll check tomorrow if

E Yeah! e 1 D

Stagger 10/25/2016 1:24 AM there is a special ending for 100%, and I have some lingering bits of curiosity. To whit, I wound of with 3/6 fragments of a health node. Were there extras, or could it be the Relic map items don't count towards percentage and there are more out there? Another thing - there are 24 weapon slots. I ended up with 21. *shrug* Separate accomplishment post, then to the pillow I go.

E Yeah! e 2 D

Hidalgo 10/25/2016 8:11 AM Did you get the flame thrower weapon? I hear it is the best item in the game.

E Yeah! e 0 D

Stagger 10/25/2016 11:37 AM I did, but it comes very late in the game. I can spoil how it's obtained if'n you want. There are a couple I prefer to it. The Heat Seeker (found that in a Relic map) and the Tethered energy ball thing ... I really like Shards and the Ion beam. It's cool how I had a use for most of them, as there is a lot of situational applicability.

E Yeah! e 0 D Hidalgo 10/25/2016 4:34 PM Nice. I still have abunch more weapons to get so I will get there when I get there. I am more interested in the different movement systems trace has though.

E Yeah! e 1 D
