Although the program sought to satirize inconsistencies in the way the British media treats and sensationalizes child sex offenders and their crimes (Clark, 2001), it offended many viewers and caused considerable controversy. Over 900 complaints were made to the Independent Television Commission, almost 250 complaints to the Broadcasting Standards Commission, and 2,000 complaints to Channel 4, “officially” making Paedogeddon the most complained-about television program in British television history at that time. This paper examines the nature of the objections to Paedogeddon as played out on the pages of the British national press and contributes to debates about morally acceptable television. Three themes are identified in the press objections to the mock-documentary: aesthetic arguments; moral and ethical implications; and consequences of ministerial intervention. The nature of these press objections served to prevent an engagement with Paedogeddon’s critique of the media. Further, the analysis illustrates how media discourses and scripts can fix and limit debates surrounding controversial television programming.

And they’re essentially gone. This is moviemaking that explores a basic human wonder about how to connect with a person who’s not you. And here we are dancing on its grave.” (Morris) Kathrina Glitre’s first quote introduces a 2006 analysis of the persistence of romantic comedy conventions from the 1930s to the 1960s. The second is from the introductory pages of The Glass Slipper (2013) in which Susan Weisser discusses post-feminist romance literature. The third is from The New York Times writer Wesley Morris in a 2019 piece on the disappearance of the romantic comedy. These three quotes are only a selection of similar views expressed in various publications and all seem to reach the same two conclusions: romantic comedies have no grounds in reality and the genre has essentially been declared dead.

  • The Last of the Romantic Comedies
THE LAST OF THE ROMANTIC COMEDIES: THE DEATH AND EVENTUAL REBIRTH OF THE GENRE A Thesis Presented to The Honors Tutorial College Ohio University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation from the Honors Tutorial College with the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film by Luke Porst April 2016 2 The Romantic Comedy has been a staple of the Hollywood movie system since the birth of sound. The allure of the genre is easy to see. Comedy has always appealed to the human yearning for enjoyment and laughter. Romance is one of our deepest and truest desires. And the two go hand-in-hand in a way that truly connects with the audience’s own real experiences of love and relationships. Traditionally, the romantic comedy is synonymous is with the ideas of “true love,” “destiny,” and “happily ever after.” Of course, like all genres, the traits upon which the romantic comedy was founded have gone through various cycles and revisions. As society and culture go through shifts, so does the art that reflects it. With motion pictures being one of the most dominant art forms of the last one hundred years, naturally it most closely mirrors the changes of the world it exists in. Romantic Comedies have experienced incredible highs and some dark lows. Currently, the romantic comedy is in something of a low. While some prominent recent work in the genre has proven quite popular and critically applauded, it is all part of a current cycle in which the romantic comedy is trying to figure out it’s place in our present cynical world.

  • Middlebrow Cinematic Identity Formations Are Located in the Realm of ‘Quality’ Romantic Sex Comedies
6 THE MEXICAN ROMANTIC SEX COMEDY The emergence of Mexican middlebrow filmmaking in the 1990s Deborah Shaw The middlebrow and Mexican film culture: an introduction This chapter charts the rise of a new genre in Mexican cinema in the 1990s: the romantic sex comedy, a middlebrow cultural form that was born from changes in a national cinema culture that saw the development of the multiplex in Mexican cities and the development of a new professional bourgeoisie working in new mediascapes. This, together with a funding landscape that was moving away from a state-sponsored national arts cinema, resulted in more commercial forms of film- making that created a new cinema-going middle class. In the light of these social and cultural shifts, this chapter reinterprets Bourdieu’s notion of the middlebrow (‘culture moyenne’) as a ‘second rate imitation of legitimate culture’ (1999, 323). It argues that what constitutes the middlebrow is not fixed, and can and has changed as the nature of the middle classes themselves changes, and the national context to which it is applied shifts. Mark Jancovich, in an article on pornography and the middlebrow, has suggested that new configurations of the petite bourgeoisie create new forms of middlebrow culture (2001), and I argue that this is the case in a series of films released in the 1990s in Mexico. Jancovich writes this in relation to pornography and the mid- dlebrow, yet it is very apposite to the Mexican context in which new middlebrow cinematic identity formations are located in the realm of ‘quality’ romantic sex comedies. This chapter examines the two most commercially successful Mexican films of this period, Slo con tu pareja / Love in the Time of Hysteria (Cuarón 1991) and Sexo, pudor y lágrimas / Sex, Shame and Tears (Serrano 1998), and considers the ways in which high and low cultural registers are mixed together to form a new Mexican middlebrow.

  • From Comic Cure for Delusional Democracy: Republic, by Gene Fendt
From Comic Cure for Delusional Democracy: Republic, by Gene Fendt Chapter Three Enlarging Homer An Aristophanic Sex Comedy Better well hung than ill wed. Book 5 is often considered Plato’s most Aristophanic comic writing. The question is, what is the import of this comic, ironic—or is it serious?—part of the dialogue? Is it a proleptic amicus curiae brief that dares bring Title Nine to face “Brown v. Board of Education” as a jury-rigging attempt to offer “separate but equal” about a matter which in principle is demonstrably unequal if it is separate? Or is it a reductio ad coed naked absurdum of the demands democracy is likely to make regarding “equal rights and freedom . in the behavior of women toward men and men toward women” (563b)? Or is it merely male hegemony by another name, that is, a proposal that “dispenses with the notion of gender,” but in such a way that “the female guardians . should simply turn themselves into men”? And what should be thought of the entire class of public servants who have no private to call their own and whose sacred matings last maybe a week, and in any case less than two months? Or what should we make of the expenditure of much time, testing and educational effort to produce exceptional female guardians— whose prime will be spent in celebratory matings—as many as possible— and their consequent pregnancies? Perhaps paying attention to this discussion’s place in the dialogue we can measure the extension, purpose and intended dramatic force of these wave-borne questions.
