Over the past four years, countless people have provided me with their impressions, opinions. and recollections of Pioneer Day and pioneer veneration in their lives. Ron WaJker helped introduce me to the scholarly literature on the Mormon Cultural Region. Thanks is due to KSL television in Salt Lake City for broadcasting Salt Lake City's "Days of '47" parade and to the people of Fairview. v Spring City, and Manti in Sanpete County. Utah for their Pioneer Day festivities and pageant spectacles in which I was panicipant observer. My wife· s grandparents Marion and Wanda Smi£.h shared many of their own reminiscences and documentation of Snowflake, Arizona· s Pioneer Day celebrations since the 1870s. My parents Dan and LeAnn Eliason. my wife Stephanie. and children Shelby and Caleb have been great cheerleaders and a wonderful suppon. The Charles Redd Center for Western studies assisted this project with a generous grant without which the research for chapters five through eight would not have been possible. The University of Texas at Austin Office of Graduate Studies also made fellowship money available. In the course of this research. I spoke on the phone with over two hundred mayors. city-council men and women, city and county government workers. chamber of commerce personnel. historical society volunteers, LOS bishops and Relief Society presidents. and other designated festival organizers-all of whom were gracious and helpful. My own curious interest in this topic stems in part from the fact that lam a Mormon who is neither a conven from outside of the LDS Church nor an .. ethnic Mormon·· descended from plains-crossing pioneer ancestors. My liminality betwixt and between these two categories highlighted by my culture have given me somewhat of an outsider/insider perspective on the Mormon historical experience. '"Mormonism" is the religion I practice. I came to do so as a "conven from the inside" rather than a proselyte. As far as this study is a study of religion. it is reflexive ethnography. As far as it is an ethnography of Mormon regional culture. my qualifications for being an "insider" are somewhat more ambiguous vi having grown up the child of an Air Force pilot and having lived five years in Utah and four in a historically Mormon pan of Arizona. Nevenheless. Mormon pioneer history is my "identity history .. -the history of the people with whom I identify (even if they are my "spirituar· rather than biological ancestors) and to whose genealogical heritage I am linked by marriage. I am grateful to the Latter-day Saints who, with their heroic transcendence as well as with their human frailties. established Zion in the wilderness and gave it a strong base from which to reach out and touch the lives of my twentieth-century ancestors in South Dakota and California. Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin. 1998 Supervisor: Robert Abzug From 1846 to 1869. eighty thousand Mormons took wago!l.s and handcarts across the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains to perform the Western Hemisphere's largest ever religious migration. This dissenation examines how Mormons celebrate this pioneer experience as an identity-defining touchstone of their American-born religion. In the 1990s, Latter-day Saints still remember their precursors· flight from persecution in folklore; art; numerous museums and monuments; as well as annual plays. pageants. and pmades throughout the West. The most significant uniquely-Mormon holiday is Pioneer Day-the yearly July 24th celebration of Brigham Young's arrival in the Salt Lake Valley. While several studies have recounted the story of the Mormon Exodus itself, my dissenation will be the first to examine the historical development. geographic distribution. and cultural function of Latter-day Saint remembrances viii of their pioneer past as Mormondom has responded to the challenges of rapid global growth and increased contact with the ··Gentile" world.     PART THREE Creating and Communicating Movement History: Methodology and Theory HASAN KWAME JEFFRIES Remaking History Barack Obama, Political Cartoons, and the Civil Rights Movement n the forty- !"h anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have Oa Dream” speech, which he delivered on August #$, %&'(, during the March on Washington, Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party’s nom- ination for president of the United States. In doing so, he became the !rst African American to earn the top spot on a major political party’s presiden- tial ticket. This historical twist of fate was not lost on Obama, but in keeping with his campaign strategy, which called for him to avoid discussing race, he downplayed the happenstance, alluding to it only with a passing refer- ence to “a young preacher from Georgia.”) The media, however, did not hesi- tate to point out the coincidence, freely invoking the spirit of King and the March on Washington. Political cartoonists re*ected this tendency in their work. While covering Obama’s nomination, they made frequent reference to that historic day nearly half a century earlier. Cartoonist R. J. Matson, for example, published a piece the day before Obama’s acceptance speech that featured King, standing on steps not unlike those of the Lincoln Memorial (from which King delivered his most famous speech), holding an oversized replica of Obama’s campaign emblem high above his head., Allusions to King and the March on Washington made by those covering Obama’s campaign neither began nor ended with the Democratic National Convention. Instead, they spanned the full length of Obama’s run for the White House, starting in earnest the day he announced his candidacy in Feb- ruary #--.

    ROCKPORT UTAH A BRIEF HISTORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF HOMES Edited and Compiled by Thomas E. Brown FORWARD Several years ago I was asked to speak at sacrament meeting program in the Peoa Ward. The Peoa members of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers had planned the program and I was asked to speak about the pioneers in the valley. Since no one specifically asked me to speak about Peoa, I focused my remarks on my hometown of Rockport. Days were spent researching the subject. Books and documents in my possession provided a base, but additional information was needed. Much time was spent at the Church Historical Department reviewing documents and soon enough information had been collected to fill the assignment. After the meeting, several friends asked for copies of the talk. The information was not typed and it needed to be put together better. All this time I had a set of wonderful photographs showing the homes in Rockport taken by Florence Siddoway Walsh Hunter years before. The photos had been shown to friends who said they would like copies. Because of the interest in both the talk and the photos, I decided to get the history typed and the photos enlarged and labeled so they could be put together in some printed form. There may be misspelled names, wrong dates, incorrect information, omissions and a host of other problems with this document. Some problems may have existed in the materials I used and some may be of my own making. This is not a complete history in any sense of the word, but I hope you find some enjoyment and satisfaction in reviewing the history and the photos just as I have.

Every year, fishermen, scientists, and managers wait to see if the fishery reverses its fantastic growth, which has been a salutary effect of climate change over the past three decades. The gulf has as many horizons as it has islands, and nobody knows the whole thing. Like the story of the blind men and the elephant, every person you ask, even the most expert, will describe a different gulf to you, and a different crisis.
