Note to the Secretary-General Luncheon hosted by you on the occasion of thdfBpecial Session on Children Thursday. 20 Septerrf Guests You will recall your decision to have a different format for this lunch i.e., to include Heads of State/Government, Vice Presidents and Crown Princes with their spouses, as well as top level leaders of civil society and private sector. I am enclosing Protocol's proposed list for your approval. This means that no other Head of Delegation will be invited, which is following the format used for the Millennium Summit lunch. Protocol has been explaining to delegations that Ministers and other Heads of Delegations will be offered a lunch by you the following week for the General Debate. Nevertheless, it is the first time that you are including dignitaries from civil society and the private sector to a lunch of Heads of State/Government. The list of 45 to 50 people from the civil society and private sector has been carefully constructed with UNICEF and Protocol. This means that given the total number of Heads of State/Government and spouses expected (probably close to 150), we will not be able to include the spouses of other non-government people. Cases such as Melinda Gates, Grafa Machel and Julie Belafonte are justified in their own right. We may need to include an exception, in case you wish to invite your Messenger for Peace Mohammed Ali, (he needs his daughter's assistance to move around). This will also mean that we will need to keep the number of UN Senior Staff to a minimum, also without spouses. We will need to keep some slots for heads of organizations such as WHO, World Bank and OAU, etc., in case they confirm their participation. Protocol can accommodate a maximum of 240 people, although they would prefer the total number to be kept at 220. Speakers You have invited Nelson Mandela and Bill Gates (letters to confirm this are being sent out) to be keynote speakers at the lunch. It is proposed that a Master of Ceremonies conducts the event introducing each speaker (Mandela followed by Gates) and inviting you to close with your remarks. Would you approve this order and would you want maybe Shashi Tharoor to officiate as Master of Ceremonies?
