A SELECTION OF WRITINGS FROM TWO OF THE FOUNDERS OF "DIVINE SCIENCE"By Steven H ProppMalinda Elliott Cramer (1844-1906) and Fannie Brooks James (1854-1914) were among the founders of the , a healer, and important figures in the early movement. The editors wrote in the Foreword to this 1957 book, "In response to the ever-increasing interest in the things of Spirit, this volume is sent forth ... The fundamental principle of Divine Science, the of ... is to be found within the covers of this textbook. It contains the essential teachings of the founders of Divine Science since it is a compilation of Truth and Health ... and Divine Science And Healing... Divine Science as presented herein bases its teachings upon the principle of the omnipresence of God...and the laws of His perfect activity. Divine Science knows no authority but this self-evident truth from which to reason and upon which to base its decisions." (Pg. 5- 6)Nona Brooks states in her "Early History of Divine Science," "In 1889 Mrs. Cramer came to Denver and taught her first class here. We found to our delight that her teaching tallied to ours to a 'T.' We, who up to this time had been nameless, asked if we might call our teaching Divine Science also. She most graciously granted this and from that time on there was fine cooperation between our two groups." (Pg. 14)They state, "Since Spirit is omnipresent and absolutely fills all and is infinite, there can be no power of evil anywhere ... God, the Good, excludes the belief in any opposing presence or power, for opposites cannot be in the same place at the same time; no more can good and evil exist together." (Pg. 30) They observe, "Hitherto prayer has been considered an expressed desire to be released from some condition or to have some need supplied. Hitherto we have not realized that the conditions we experience in our lives are the automatic fulfillment of our own state of consciousness, and so we have prayed that they might pass from us, not realizing that we must pass from them." (Pg. 80)They suggest, "The practitioner endeavors to follow the method used by in his healing work. Jesus called forth expression of faith, or recognized it manifest by those he healed, before speaking words of power... Their faith substantiated by Jesus united their thought and consciousness. This was the means by which the power of the Spirit was realized and wholeness was manifested." (Pg. 105) Later, they add, "the pattern of his beautifully perfect Christhood is implanted within his innermost nature... Man's Christlike characteristics and nature will unfold through the process of growth and development until the consciousness of the individual brings forth the outpouring of the Christ as his own person. Just as Jesus became the Christ, so this is the latent possibility and destiny for the individual---each one will become Christed." (Pg. 116)They explain, "Divine Science recognizes the as the history of the growth of man's awareness of God... the story of man's search for God. The Bible is the history of Everyman at the various stages of his unfoldment in consciousness from that of Adam... to the Jesus Christ state of consciousness... Therefore it is natural that the Bible, especially the teachings of Jesus, should constitute a very important textbook of Divine Science. It is upon these teachings that Divine Science bases its interpretations of various doctrines." (Pg. 135)They conclude, "Divine Science is a Christian based upon the teachings of Jesus, expounding the principle of the omnipresence of God and proving by the law of expression that innately man can only be what God is. Divine Science emphasizes the law of expression for upon this law or trinity---Creator, creative activity, and creation---the unity and fulfillment of all law is based... Divine Science establishes fully and absolutely through its teaching that in reality there can be no dual power, no duality anywhere. God has nothing but Himself out of which to make His children. They are perfect because He is perfect... There is only one mind, and they share it... Man exists as a God-idea brought forth into form." (Pg. 190-191)This book remains an excellent introduction to the teachings of the Church of Divine Science.

James and "Divine Science and Healing" by Malinda E. Cramer. The Church of Divine Science is a religious movement within the wider New Thought movement. The group was formalized in in the 1880s under . "Divine Science" defines itself as "an organized teaching pertaining to God and the manifestation of God in Creation." It holds that its foundation truth is "that limitless Being, God, is Good, is equally present everywhere, and is the All of everything." It defines God as "pure Spirit, absolute, changeless, eternal, manifesting in and as all Creation, yet also transcending Creation" and that evil is therefore neither necessary nor permanent and has no reality within itself, but has existence only so long as human beings support it by believing in it. Like other New Thought churches, Divine Science considers healing very important, and emulates the work of Jesus Christ, who in the cures many people. The Denver Church's founder, Nona Brooks, stated, "The whole of Divine Science is the practice of the Presence of God. Truth comes through the Bible, , contemplation and and the practice of the presence of God here and now."
