WATCHING TELEVISION WITH FRIENDS: TWEEN GIRLS’ INCLUSION OF TELEVISUAL MATERIAL IN FRIENDSHIP by CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Childhood Studies written under the direction of Daniel Thomas Cook and approved by ______________________________ Daniel T. Cook ______________________________ Anna Beresin ______________________________ Todd Wolfson Camden, New Jersey May 2016 ABSTRACT Watching Television with Friends: Tween Girls’ Inclusion of Televisual Material in Friendship By CYNTHIA MICHIELLE MAURER Dissertation Director: Daniel Thomas Cook This qualitative work examines the role of tween live-action television shows in the friendships of four tween girls, providing insight into the use of televisual material in peer interactions. Over the course of one year and with the use of a video camera, I recorded, observed, hung out and watched television with the girls in the informal setting of a friend’s house. I found that friendship informs and filters understandings and use of tween television in daily conversations with friends. Using Erving Goffman’s theory of facework as a starting point, I introduce a new theoretical framework called friendship work to locate, examine, and understand how friendship is enacted on a granular level. Friendship work considers how an individual positions herself for her own needs before acknowledging the needs of her friends, and is concerned with both emotive effort and social impact. Through group television viewings, participation in television themed games, and the creation of webisodes, the girls strengthen, maintain, and diminish previously established bonds.

READING GAYS ON THE SMALL SCREEN A RECEPTION STUDY AMONG FLEMISH VIEWERS OF QUEER RESISTANCE IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION FICTION FREDERIK DHAENENS 72 - Abstract Drawing on the insights of queer theory, this study Frederik Dhaenens is a departs from the notion that popular culture can articulate member of the Centre for resistance to the discourse of heteronormativity, which Cinema and Media Studies is being reiterated and consolidated in popular culture at the Department of products. In particular, this study focuses on the potential Communication Studies, of gay representation in contemporary television fi ction to Ghent University; e-mail: resist heteronormative institutions, practices, norms, and [email protected]. values. In preceding qualitative textual studies on queer resistance in a selection of popular series (namely The Wire, Family Guy, Six Feet Under, Brothers & Sisters, Torchwood and Vol.19 (2012), No. 4, pp. 57 4, pp. (2012), No. Vol.19 True Blood), it is argued that these series represent gay characters and themes that expose the oppressive prac- tices of heteronormativity and represent viable alternatives to the heteronormative way of living. As articulations of resistance only become resistant in the act of reading, this study aims to explore how television audiences negotiate the meaning of gay representation and its potential to resist. Its aim is twofold: First, it aims to study how Flem- ish regular television viewers of contemporary television fi ction read gay representation and, in particular, how they read articulations of queer resistance. Second, it aims to in- quire whether or not the television viewers assume hetero- normative or resistant discursive positions in their readings.

Interviews with coachs, teens and professional athletes highlight the problem and em- phasize how alcohol use undermines sports success. The medical health deficits of steroids are clearly presented.

  • Legislative Committee on Bill C-32/Comite Législatif Chargé Du Projet De Loi C-32 Subject: Bill C32: Television Production and Technology in Canada
From: Stephen Stohn Sent: January 30, 2011 9:30 AM To: ~Legislative Committee on Bill C-32/Comite législatif chargé du projet de loi C-32 Subject: Bill C32: Television production and technology in Canada Honourable Committee Members: As a Canadian television industry producer, I've experienced firsthand the opportunities and challenges of the digital age and greatly support the current effort to update our copyright laws. At Degrassi: The Next Generation, engaging our fans and encouraging them to become ambassadors for the show, is our number one priority. We love to see our fans express themselves about the themes we develop in the show, and technology provides the tools to make this possible. There comes a point, however, when technology is used to go one step too far. At Degrassi we draw the line at the pirating of episodes before they go to air and the use of our content or our fans' content by other people in order to profit at our collective expense. When unauthorized people profit from the use of Degrassi content, it crosses the line of fairness and affects our ability to produce a quality series—one which has become a prized cultural product and job creator in Canada. Television production can only flourish and provide opportunities to actors, producers and the scores of others working in the field, if we have a set of rules that protects original creators. Such laws, that are up-to-date with today's digital environment, are imperative to helping us protect our creative content from those who would misuse technology.
