The present issue is devoted to the society's annual lecture which was delivered during the study weekend held at Kirkley Hall, Ponteland, in September 1984. Dr. Sheridan Gilley, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology at the University of Durham, has placed the society firmly in his debt both by his readiness to lecture at unavoidably short notice and by the theme of his paper. At first sight "Newman and Prophecy", whether Evangelical or Catho lic, is unlikely to be of immediate relevance to our concerns. The past year, however, has seen the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Edward Irving's death, and Dr. Gilley's paper, by reminding us that prophecy was a major concern of mainstream Protestantism until well into the nineteenth century, provides a context for our understanding of what otherwise is an embarrass- . ingly eccentric (and therefore ignored) aspect of our past. Oxford Movement
Oxford Movement This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on theLearn talk more The Oxford Movement was a movement of High Church members of the Church of England which eventually developed into Anglo-Catholicism. The movement, whose original devotees were mostly associated with the University of Oxford, argued for the reinstatement of some older Christian traditions of faith and their inclusion into Anglican liturgy and theology. They thought of Anglicanism as one of three branches of the "one holy, catholic, and apostolic" Christian church. By the 1840s many participants decided that the Anglican Church lacked grace, and converted to Roman Catholicism. Edward John Henry Bouverie Newman Pusey The movement's philosophy was known as Tractarianism after its series of publications, the Tracts for the Times, published from 1833 to 1841. Tractarians were also disparagingly referred to as "Newmanites" (before 1845) and "Puseyites" (after 1845) after two prominent Tractarians, John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey. Other well-known Tractarians included John Keble, Charles Marriott, Richard Froude, Robert Wilberforce, Isaac Williams and William Palmer. Origins and early period In the early nineteenth century, different groups were present in the Church of England. Many, particularly in high office, saw themselves as latitudinarian (liberal) in an attempt to broaden the Church's appeal. Conversely, many clergy in the parishes were Evangelicals, as a result of the revival led by John Wesley. Alongside this, the universities became the breeding ground for a movement to restore liturgical and devotional customs which borrowed heavily from traditions before the English Reformation as well as contemporary Roman Catholic traditions.[1] The immediate impetus for the Tractarian movement was a perceived attack by the reforming Whig administration on the structure and revenues of the Church of Ireland (the established church in Ireland), with the Irish Church Temporalities Bill (1833). -

bs_bs_banner Journal of Religious History Vol. 37, No. 1, March 2013 doi: 10.1111/1467-9809.12005 CADOC LEIGHTON Finding Antichrist: Apocalypticism in Nineteenth-Century Catholic England and the Writings of Frederick Faber The article discusses the apocalyptic beliefs of the nineteenth-century English Oratorian and devotional writer, Frederick Faber, though initially providing a context among earlier and contemporary English Catholic apocalyptic writers. It proceeds, by means of a consideration of Faber’s conscious de-secularisation of language, to give an account of his identification of the elements of a transvalued contemporary popular concept of modernity as the signs of apocalyptic crisis. The article as a whole is intended to provide an aid to the perception and understanding of a pervasive apocalypticism in nineteenth-century English-speaking Catholicism. Introduction The present study is chiefly concerned with the apocalypticism expressed by one of the most noted of English spiritual writers, the Oxford convert and founder of the London Oratory, who remains most commonly referred to simply as Father Faber. In probing this unexplored and, indeed, little remarked on dimension of a well-known writer, it seems at least desirable firstly to indicate to the reader that Faber’s apocalyptic beliefs are an unsurprising phenomenon in the English Catholicism of the nineteenth century, fitting into a substantial body of literature. This extended preliminary observation is intended also to provide a means of relating the positions taken on apocalyptic topics by Faber to those of his contemporaries. Catholics Interpreting the Prophecies Regrettably, the veritable “explosion of scholarly writing on apocalyptic themes” in recent decades, with its concomitant eclipse of an older habit of disdainful categorisation of those who have embraced apocalyptic beliefs,1 1. -

Lesson 43 Confronting Dispensational Straw Men, Part 2 Review • In the previous study we began looking at common charges made against dispensational theology by its opponents. – Dispensationalism was a new invention in the 1800s by John Nelson Darby and is therefore wrong because it is not Apostolic. “Dispensational as we know it today is of comparatively recent origin, having had its beginning in England in the last century among the Plymouth Brethren.” (J.E. Bear quoted by Mason, 21) • In doing so we saw that elements of dispensational thinking can be observed from very early in church history and throughout the Middle Ages. • In this study we want to continue surveying the history of dispensational thinking from the time of the Reformation until the time of Darby. In addition, we will look at an additional charge made against dispensationalism, the charge of divisiveness. Lastly, we will briefly consider the historical development of dispensationalism’s chief rival, Covenant Theology. Unsystematized Dispensationalism • Theodoret, Bishop of Cyrrhus (390?-457?) —is credited with having said, “God dispenseth all things suitably to the particular time, and measureth his institutions by the abilities and powers of men.” • Islam —possets a parallel to the idea of successive revelations by dispensations. “The idea in Islam is that there were 12,000 prophets (nabi), most of whom are unknown and unmentioned. Assessments of the early nineteenth-century Church of England remain coloured by a critique originating in radical anti-clerical polemics of the period and reinforced by the writings of the Tractarians and Élie Halévy. It is often assumed that, in consequence of social and political change, the influence of a complacent and reactionary church was irreparably eroded by 1830. -

1 Saturday, April 28, 2012—Soldiers Training for Service—Faith of Our Fathers—I: A Brief History of Dispensational Theology Through 1825 Introduction In this first study we are going to focus our attention on dispensational theology in general. Therefore we will be looking at the history and development of dispensational thinking and principles through the year 1825. The next two studies will focus specifically on the historical development of the Mid-Acts position. The opponents of dispensational theology, including some of our former colleges, have sought to attack the mid-Acts position by creating the perception that dispensational theology is new in church history and is therefore false. It is commonly repeated that dispensational theology was invented in the 1800s by John Nelson Darby (JND), thereby, creating the perception that the dispensational approach to Scriptures simply fell out of the clear blue sky in early1800s with JND. Not only is this approach historically false, but more importantly it is scripturally false. God has always been a dispensationalist regardless of man’s knowledge of it. The Greek word oikonomia has been in the Bible since the first century when the New Testament was written. o Luke 16:2-4—“stewardship” o I Corinthians 9:17—“dispensation of the gospel” o Ephesians 1:10—“dispensation of the fulness of times” o Ephesians 3:2—“dispensation of grace” o Colossians 1:25—“dispensation of God” Therefore, dispensationalism is not new; it is as old as the Bible itself. What happened in the 19th century with dispensationalism is the same as what happened in the 16th century Reformation with justification by faith. -

Tracking Reading in Nineteenth-Century Melbourne Diaries Susan K. Martin HIS ARTICLE CONSIDERS SOME COLONIAL RESPONSES TO THE WIDER FIELD OF ‘BRITISH ’ Victorian literary reading by following the reading traces left in the Tdiaries of three middle-class women in Melbourne in the 1860s, 70s and 80s: Henrietta Jennings (1887–89), Thomas Anne Cole (1867–82) and Joyce Sincock (1862). Cole’s and Jennings’ diaries offer the most detail but, for both, the record of reading tends to be random, partial and sometimes illegible. Sincock’s diary is brief, and more youthful. It offers a slice of one moment in her life, with considerable detail about some of her reading at that moment. Jennings’ and Cole’s’ diaries map regular visits to town. Jennings visits circulating libraries in Melbourne, such as ‘Mullen’s Select Library’ in Bourke Street, to acquire the latest novels and, as Cole’s early diaries show similar fashionable reading, it is likely she borrowed, or possibly bought, from the same sources. All three diaries reveal wider patterns of reading across a range of genres (and sources), particularly Cole and Jennings; newspaper reading, which may have included the reading of local, as well as British, serial fiction alongside attention to ‘serious’ news items. The reading which Jennings records is eclectic, in terms of genre, and international-Anglophone, including a substantial amount of American writing as well as British and Australian. The reading of Cole, in her early records, tends more to British writing, and travel writing while Sincock reads whatever she can get. All three women also engage in religious reading; the Bible and sermons, but also a variety of other works that might be designated spiritual.
