How to use a solicitor in England and Wales Easy Read Do you need a solicitor? Solicitors give advice about the law. They are experts and can help you understand your rights and solve different legal problems you may have. There are many areas of law and different legal problems. For example, if you need help with a lease if you want to complain about a service or if you feel you lost your job unfairly. 2 If you need a solicitor you should choose one who knows the law about the problem you have and can help you. This guidance will tell you about what to expect when you use a solicitor. It also tells you how you can get the best and most suitable help for you. Finding a solicitor You can find a solicitor in different ways. Local advice agencies such as a law centre or Citizens Advice Bureau can recommend solicitors. You might like to talk to friends, family or local groups about their experiences. 3 You can also find solicitors through the Law Society at: www.lawsociety.org.uk/ FindASolicitor If you are arrested and kept in custody at a police station you can get free legal advice. If you are charged with a criminal offence and you need to go to court, you may be able to get free legal advice. Meeting your solicitor When you have chosen a solicitor you will need to make an appointment. If you need to see a solicitor urgently the solicitor should try and see you as quickly as possible. -

Parliamentary inquiry into the use of immigration detention in the UK About the Law Centre 1. Law Centre (NI) works to promote social justice and provides specialist legal services to advice organisations and disadvantaged individuals through our advice line and our casework services from our two regional offices in Northern Ireland. The Law Centre provides advice, casework, training, information and policy services to our member organisations. We are the main advisers on immigration law in Northern Ireland and facilitate the Immigration Practitioners’ Group consisting of lawyers and voluntary sector organisations. We also chair the Racial Equality Forum’s Immigration Sub Group and are members of the NI Strategic Migration Partnership, the Refugee and Asylum Forum and the Home Office Asylum Stakeholders Forum. We regularly provide advice to immigration detainees in Northern Ireland and to the community groups that support them. Immigration detention in Northern Ireland 2. Prior to 2011, immigration detainees in Northern Ireland had initially been held in prisons and then in police custody cells. In 2011, Larne House Short-term Holding Facility was opened in a port town north of Belfast. It is managed by Tascorp and has beds for 19 detainees. Detainees are held for a maximum period of 5 days (or 7 if Removal Directions are in place). Detainees are then released, transferred to Immigration Removal Centres in Great Britain or removed, including to the Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately, we do not know how many detainees are held at Larne House, nor what happens to them once they leave the detention centre. Access to Northern Ireland immigration data has always been problematic as the Home Office does not routinely publish asylum figures that are disaggregated by region (Scotland and Northern Ireland make up one region).1 The lack of data means that we do not have an overall picture of the extent of immigration detention or enforcement in Northern Ireland. -

Our aims and principles The Citizens Advice service aims: • To provide the advice people need for the problems they face. • To improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. The service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. It values diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination. The principles of CAB advice Independent – we will always act in the interests of our clients, without influence from any outside bodies. Impartial – we don’t judge our clients or make assumptions about them. Our service is open to everyone, and we treat everyone equally. Confidential – we won’t pass on anything a client tells us – or even the fact that they’ve visited us – without their permission. Free – no-one has to pay for any part of the service we provide. Scottish Expert Panel for the Collaborative Economy briefing - Citizens Advice Scotland Scottish Expert Panel for the Collaborative Economy Participation: Consumers, Providers, Business & Digital Skills Written briefing from Citizens Advice Scotland Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS), our 61 member Citizen Advice Bureaux (CAB), the Citizen Advice consumer helpline, and the Extra Help Unit, form Scotland’s largest independent advice network. Advice provided by our service is free, independent, confidential, impartial and available to everyone. Our self- help website Advice for Scotland provides information on rights and helps people solve their problems. In 2015/16 the Citizens Advice network in Scotland helped over 310,000 clients in Scotland alone and dealt with over one million advice issues. With support from the network clients had financial gains of over £120 million and our Scottish self-help website Advice for Scotland received over 4 million unique page views. Introduction CAS welcomes the opportunity to provide evidence to the Scottish Expert Panel for the Collaborative Economy. The benefits to consumers and to the economy of the collaborative economy are potentially significant, although it is important that protections are in place to ensure that consumers, providers and workers do not suffer from any poor practice or policies. In this initial briefing, we provide high level evidence on the consumer experience of aspects of the collaborative economy as collated by citizens advice bureaux and the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline. Due to the nature of advice provision, evidence from the CAB network predominantly focuses on problems that consumers experience in any sector. This briefing therefore focuses on consumer protection and the types of problems that people can experience in the collaborative economy – whether they are consumers, providers or workers. -

Contents In the five years since CEPLER was created, we have provided an unparalleled scope of opportunity for 2: Introduction and our students to expand their knowledge and CEPLER Framework experience of legal practice through careers events and initiatives; our growing advocacy provision; and 3: Headlines our hugely successful Pro Bono Group. 4: Meet the Team We are proud to have partnered with a number of organisations and institutions that have helped us to 5-6: Pro Bono Group maximise the scale and impact of these initiatives. CEPLER’s research agenda has continued to explore, 7: Careers Calendar challenge and pre-empt the issues affecting legal practice and education. Justice George Palmer 2007 In my 2006 report I wrote of the uncertain environment in which organisations such as Arts Law compete for and with the demands on the public purse, and the resultant need for the Board to identify and pursue strategies to increase the revenue base, to sustain the current service levels and to assist in meeting its obligations from any future growth. Despite being a difficult year with uncertainty over funding issues, Arts Law was once again able to fulfill its obligations, to exceed expectations and meet performance indicators across the panoply of its services. This was due in no large part to the reputation Arts Law enjoys in the legal, arts and local/national communities in which it works. When approached by Arts Law to be involved jointly – to partner – in a project, it is rare such approval is not forthcoming. -

A full programme has been prepared. There will be thought provoking plenary sessions, feisty debates, experts providing updates, Law Centre storytelling, and a full social programme.
