This guidance will tell you about what to expect when you use a solicitor. It also tells you how you can get the best and most suitable help for you. Finding a solicitor You can find a solicitor in different ways. Local advice agencies such as a law centre or Citizens Advice Bureau can recommend solicitors. You might like to talk to friends, family or local groups about their experiences. 3 You can also find solicitors through the Law Society at: www.lawsociety.org.uk/ FindASolicitor If you are arrested and kept in custody at a police station you can get free legal advice. If you are charged with a criminal offence and you need to go to court, you may be able to get free legal advice. Meeting your solicitor When you have chosen a solicitor you will need to make an appointment. If you need to see a solicitor urgently the solicitor should try and see you as quickly as possible. -

Parliamentary inquiry into the use of immigration detention in the UK About the Law Centre 1. Law Centre (NI) works to promote social justice and provides specialist legal services to advice organisations and disadvantaged individuals through our advice line and our casework services from our two regional offices in Northern Ireland. The Law Centre provides advice, casework, training, information and policy services to our member organisations. We are the main advisers on immigration law in Northern Ireland and facilitate the Immigration Practitioners’ Group consisting of lawyers and voluntary sector organisations. We also chair the Racial Equality Forum’s Immigration Sub Group and are members of the NI Strategic Migration Partnership, the Refugee and Asylum Forum and the Home Office Asylum Stakeholders Forum. We regularly provide advice to immigration detainees in Northern Ireland and to the community groups that support them. Immigration detention in Northern Ireland 2. Prior to 2011, immigration detainees in Northern Ireland had initially been held in prisons and then in police custody cells. In 2011, Larne House Short-term Holding Facility was opened in a port town north of Belfast. It is managed by Tascorp and has beds for 19 detainees. Detainees are held for a maximum period of 5 days (or 7 if Removal Directions are in place). Detainees are then released, transferred to Immigration Removal Centres in Great Britain or removed, including to the Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately, we do not know how many detainees are held at Larne House, nor what happens to them once they leave the detention centre. Access to Northern Ireland immigration data has always been problematic as the Home Office does not routinely publish asylum figures that are disaggregated by region (Scotland and Northern Ireland make up one region).1 The lack of data means that we do not have an overall picture of the extent of immigration detention or enforcement in Northern Ireland. -

Selecting Selinger: The 2009 Leadership Race and the Future of NDP Conventions in Manitoba∗ Jared J. Wesley, University of Manitoba [email protected] Paper for Presentation at The Annual Meeting of the Canadian Political Science Association Concordia University, Montreal June 2010 Abstract In a delegated convention held in October, 2009, the Manitoba New Democratic Party (NDP) selected former Finance Minister Greg Selinger to replace Canada's longest-serving and most popular premier, Gary Doer. Official appeals filed by the victor’s chief rival, Steve Ashton, and persistent criticism of the process in the media raised significant concerns over the method by which the new premier was selected. These complaints proved a fleeting fixation of the media, and have not harmed the NDP’s popularity or affected the smooth transition of the premiership from Doer to Selinger. Yet, questions persist as to whether the 2009 leadership race marked the last delegated convention in the history of the Manitoba New Democratic Party. This paper examines the 2009 leadership race in the context of contests past, analyzing the list of criticisms directed at the process. Grounding its findings in the comments of delegates to the 2009 Convention, it concludes with a series of probable choices for the party, as it begins the process of considering reforms to its leadership selection process. Contents In the five years since CEPLER was created, we have provided an unparalleled scope of opportunity for 2: Introduction and our students to expand their knowledge and CEPLER Framework experience of legal practice through careers events and initiatives; our growing advocacy provision; and 3: Headlines our hugely successful Pro Bono Group. 4: Meet the Team We are proud to have partnered with a number of organisations and institutions that have helped us to 5-6: Pro Bono Group maximise the scale and impact of these initiatives. CEPLER’s research agenda has continued to explore, 7: Careers Calendar challenge and pre-empt the issues affecting legal practice and education. Justice George Palmer 2007 In my 2006 report I wrote of the uncertain environment in which organisations such as Arts Law compete for and with the demands on the public purse, and the resultant need for the Board to identify and pursue strategies to increase the revenue base, to sustain the current service levels and to assist in meeting its obligations from any future growth. Despite being a difficult year with uncertainty over funding issues, Arts Law was once again able to fulfill its obligations, to exceed expectations and meet performance indicators across the panoply of its services. This was due in no large part to the reputation Arts Law enjoys in the legal, arts and local/national communities in which it works. When approached by Arts Law to be involved jointly – to partner – in a project, it is rare such approval is not forthcoming. -

Statement of Votes for the 38th Provincial General Election June 3, 2003 Relevé des suffrages pour la 38e élection générale provinciale le 3 juin 2003 Historical Summaries/ Comptes rendus d’élection précédentes Summary of Election Procedures in Manitoba 1870 to 1999 In examining historical election results it is important to be aware of the legislation that existed at the time the elections were held. What follows is a summary of the evolution of electoral law in Manitoba designed to accompany the Historical Summary that follows. Many of the dates given are for the year the new procedures were first used. In many cases, however, the legislation was passed in the years preceding the election. 1870 • The standard voting procedure was public declaration of one's preference at a constituency meeting. The electoral officer recorded the votes, and the simple plurality (or 'first-past-the-post') system was used to elect members for the 24 seats in the Legislative Assembly. • Only males owning property were eligible to vote. 1888 • The property qualification was eliminated. • The secret ballot was used for the first time. • Residence requirement raised to six months in province and one month in the electoral division. 1892 • Growth in population and territorial expansion were reflected by an increase in the Assembly's seats. By 1892, there were 40 seats in the Assembly. • Persons receiving a government salary of $350 or more annually could not vote. • Fee to file nomination papers is $200. 1894 • Residency requirements changed to three months in electoral division and one year in province. 1900 • Persons receiving government salary could vote. -

In 2020, it will be the 50th anniversary of the first Law Centre. Please join us at Northumbria University to marvel at what has been achieved, congratulate ourselves for surviving so many challenges and learn together from our past so that we can shape our future. Social Justice Lawyering means more than law. It now has less to do with legal aid (although providing legal aid services will always be a key part of Law Centres) but increasingly means campaigning to uphold basic human rights, holding public bodies to account, arguing for more efficient public services, embedding our services within non-legal supports for people in poverty, reaching out to more people through wider use of pro bono, and finding new ways to extend legal and social capability within our communities. A full programme has been prepared. There will be thought provoking plenary sessions, feisty debates, experts providing updates, Law Centre storytelling, and a full social programme. Most importantly, there will be us – all Law Centres, together. See you there!
