INSTRUMENT TIPS: Importance of the Bridge: by Jim Knapp Knapp Music Co INSTRUMENT TIPS: Importance of the Bridge: By Jim Knapp Knapp Music Co. email: [email protected] One of the most important elements affecting the tonal quality of a stringed instrument is the bridge. The bridge must be carefully fitted to the instrument so as to ensure effective transfer of vibration. Equally important is the proper curvature at the top of the bridge which allows for effective playing of each string. Finally, the proper bridge height allows for the optimum clearance between the strings and the fingerboard. Bridges need frequent maintenance and occasionally need to be replaced. Bridges- Care and Maintenance Leaning • It is very important the bridge be almost perpendicular to the top (or table) of the instrument. Bridges often lean forward over time (toward the fingerboard) and need to be adjusted upright. A leaning bridge can eventually fall over. In addition, a bridge left in the tilted position doesn’t yield optimum sound quality and will ultimately begin to warp. • Good bridges have been carefully fitted so that the feet of the bridge conform perfectly to the instrument. Each instrument has unique shape and features, so one instrument’s bridge cannot be transferred to another instrument. • Bridges can warp. Severe warp is serious and the bridge generally needs to be replaced. Warped cello bridges can sometimes be straightened through a special heating process, however these techniques need to be left to an experienced luthier. • Many factors go into the optimum bridge settings: thickness at the strings, thickness at the feet, string groove spacing, curvature, fingerboard height projected to the bridge, quality of the wood, mass, etc. – all affect the tone quality and the playability. • The bridge must be properly positioned on the instrument. The “setup” of bridge position in relation to the soundpost position will significantly affect the quality of sound. • There are many grades of bridges, governed in general by the quality of the wood used. • Teachers should check the condition of their students’ bridges often and recommend that corrections be made if optimum settings are not in place. .

    Electric & Acoustic Guitar Strings: A Recording of Harmonic Content Ryan Lee, Graduate Researcher Electrical & Computer Engineering Department University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign In conjunction with Professor Steve Errede and the Department of Physics Friday, January 10, 2003 2 Introduction The purpose of this study was to analyze the harmonic content and decay of different guitar strings. Testing was done in two parts: 80 electric guitar strings and 145 acoustic guitar strings. The goal was to obtain data for as many different brands, types, and gauges of strings as possible. Testing Each string was tested only once, in brand new condition (unless otherwise noted). Once tuned properly, each string was plucked with a bare thumb in two different positions. For the electric guitar, the two positions were at the top of the bridge pickup and at the top of the neck pickup. For the acoustic guitar, the two positions were at the bottom of the sound hole and at the top of the sound hole. The signal path for the recording of an electric guitar string was as follows: 1994 Gibson SG Standard to ¼” input on a Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) 896 to a computer (via firewire). Steinberg’s Cubase VST 5.0 was the software used to capture the .wav files. The 1999 Taylor 410CE acoustic guitar was recorded in an anechoic chamber. A Bruel & Kjær 4145 condenser microphone was connected directly to a Sony TCD-D8 portable DAT recorder (via its B&K preamp, power supply, and cables). Recording format was mono, 48 kHz, and 16- bit.

    Fret A fret is a raised element on the neck of a stringed instrument. Frets usually extend across the full width of the neck. On most modern western fretted instruments, frets are metal strips inserted into the fingerboard. On some historical instruments and non-European instruments, frets are made of pieces of string tied around the neck. Frets divide the neck into fixed segments at intervals related to a musical framework. On instruments such as guitars, each fret represents one semitone in the standard western system, in which one octave is divided into twelve semitones. Fret is often used as a verb, meaning simply "to press down the string behind a fret". Fretting often refers to the frets and/or their system of placement. This is damped if the string were stopped with the soft fingertip on a fretless fingerboard. Frets make it much easier for a player to achieve an acceptable standard of intonation, since the frets determine the positions for the correct notes. Furthermore, a fretted fingerboard makes it easier to play chords accurately. A disadvantage of frets is that they restrict pitches to the temperament defined by the fret positions.

    Wudtone CP Holy Grail, CP Vintage 50s upgrade fitting instructions: Thank you for choosing a Wudtone tremolo 1 Remove the existing trem. Remove the plate which covers the trem cavity on the back of the guitar and then take off the strings. Then remove each spring by first un-hooking off the trem claw and then pulling out of the block. This may need a pair of pliers to hold the spring, twist from side to side and pull up to help release the spring from the block as they are sometimes quite a tight fit. Once the strings and springs are removed, remove each of the six mounting screws, so the trem unit can be lifted off. 2 With the old trem unit removed take the .5mm shim supplied with the Wudtone trem and place it over the six holes. Then place the Wudtone Tremolo unit in position on top of the shim. With or without saddles fitted it doesn't matter. 3 Setting the Wudtone bearing screw height correctly The Wudtone trem is designed to operate with a constant pivot point ( point A on the diagram below) and give you as guitarist some 20 degrees of tilt. This is plenty of tilt for quite extreme dive bomb trem action as well as up pitch and down pitch whilst delivering total tuning stability. Whilst the plate is tilting it is maintaining contact with the body through the shim via arc B and this will de-compress and transform the dynamics of your guitar. Before any springs or strings are fitted , it is important to set correctly the height of each bearing screw.

FREEMAN Luthier Prepared for Lecture at Metiers d’art de lutherie Quebec City, Quebec February 24,2013 Alternative Woods My intent tonight is to discuss what is desired in a wood to make it suitable for Instrument construction. This is from my own experimenting and research as well as discussions with other Luthiers. In order to understand what might be desirable in alternative woods one must first understand what the properties of a traditional wood are that contribute to the acoustics of instruments. Then one might look for woods that have similar qualities to achieve similar responses. To this end there is more than one variable, so it is important to have a clear concept of the sound one wants to achieve before you start. The other aspect you want to understand is what you are trading away, be it in sound, or structure, or aesthetics versus what you are gaining by using another wood species. Perhaps economics may also be considered in this balance. We live in an age when all musicians are not connoisseurs of resonant tone wood and want a less expensive instrument to carry on tours or play on the street. The other end of this spectrum is a collector that wants incredibly figured woods that still deliver a good tone. So be aware of the purpose of your choice to use a wood not traditionally found on an instrument. This helps you accept any acoustic changes that might occur. Woods can be tested with some science though many of the properties become relative to other species.

The cello has a wondrously broad spectrum of sonic possibility, yet must be approached in a different way than other string instruments, owing to its construction, playing orientation, and physical mass. Throughout the history of the cello, many resources regarding the core technique of the cello have been published; this book makes no attempt to expand on those sources. Divers resources are also available regarding the cello’s role in orchestration; these books, however, revolve mostly around the use of the instrument as part of a sonically traditional sensibility. The techniques discussed in this book, rather, are the so-called “extended” techniques; those that are comparatively rare in music of the common practice, and usually not involved within the elemental skills of cello playing, save as fringe oddities or practice techniques.
