Tuesday, October 22 Keynote Address Session Code: FFL901K Room 401 Session Time: 09:00 Chairpersons - Kyoungdoug Min, Seoul National Univ. Keynote Speakers - Timothy Johnson, Corning Inc.

Tuesday, October 22 PANEL: Fuel-Efficient Lubricant Technologies for Energy sustainability and Green Opportunities Session Code: FFL510 Room 401 Session Time: 10:30 This SAE Panel Discussion Session will cover advanced fuel-efficient lubricant technologies for future green energy sustainability and environmental opportunities. The topics will include the major issues of global greenhouse emissions, next generation fuel-efficient lubricant developments, and global engine lubricant test specifications. This Panel Session will discuss the well-to-wheel energy efficiency and their total greenhouse emission of the current and advanced gasoline and diesel engine systems in detail. A technology overview of advanced energy systems will be provided with more feasible technology solutions for greenhouse emission reduction and fuel-efficient lubricant formulation. As the trend towards lower and lower viscosity oils for better engine efficiency continues, more details of the mixed and boundary lubrication regimes specifically in the engine are being examined. Specifically, the compositional and rheological changes of the lubricant on the walls throughout the entire piston reciprocating motion are examined, incorporating variations in temperature, rubbing speed, and oil vaporization. In particular, we are analyzing the effects of lubricant formulation on the local oil composition ( and additive), the minimum oil-film thickness and wear at the piston-ring/liner interface when the piston stops momentarily at top dead center. Contamination of the lubricant due to increased particulate matter deposition (including from advanced gasoline engines) and the effects on wear and its control will be addressed. This development trend will have a very high potential for the future global market. The converging issues of energy sustainability and environmental solutions will also be discussed in details. Simon Tung (Vanderbilt Chemicals) and Victor Wong (MIT) will be co-chairing the event for the SAE Powertrain and F&L Committee. Speakers will make oral presentations at this panel session, lasting a maximum of twenty minutes including each Q&A. This session will also include 30 minutes Q&A for entire panel discussion. .
