At The Hutong, we have called Beijing home for the past decade with our own courtyard buried deep in Beijing’s old network of alleyways that we use as our base to help visitors go beyond Beijing’s must-see spots to experience this vibrant capital – through an artistic lens! Beijing is the creative center of new arts, with a distinctly Chinese flavor. This camp gives participants the unique opportunity to explore the nation’s capital, and its modern artistic expressions, through alternative means and views. Our base of Our Hutong operation for 3 of the 5 days of this program, our courtyard is both a perfect escape from the 北 Summer heat and a great launching pad for exploring and learning about art. Courtyard Base Just a few of the activities we will get to do in our beautiful courtyard include drip or pour painting, improv, sketching, a human-centered design challenge, a hutong sensory-mapping 京 activity, DIY sculptures, and more! SUMMER CAMP | INFORMATION PACKET | BEIJING 6 Highlights Hands-on Art Throughout the week, participants will try their hand at a number of different art mediums, drawing on the incredible architecture and landscapes of Beijing as inspiration. From pour painting, to sketching, to DIY sculptures, to “found object” mandalas, participants will challenge their creativity and come away with plenty of new artistic skills. And best of all, our program is suitable for everyone, whether a complete beginner to those with a flair for art! Photography Challenge Participants learn the basic rules of photography as they explore one of Beijing’s most iconic areas, 北 Parkview Green and Ritan Park. A brief introduction followed by a series of photo challenges allows students to explore the area with a unique lens. By the end of the workshop, participants will understand concepts such as use positive & negative space, depth of field, leading lines, the rule of thirds, texture & pattern, framing, and subject foreground. They will walk away knowing the basic rules that make everyday scenes more compelling even with a camera 京 phone. SUMMER CAMP | INFORMATION PACKET | BEIJING 7 Highlight 798 Art Think you know 798? Think again! 北 798’s empty warehouses proved the perfect studio space for China’s up and coming art superstars. Often compared with New York City’s Greenwich Village or SoHo, 798 Art Zone is District a complex of vacated factories that now house a thriving community of galleries, art centers, art studios, design companies, cafes, and restaurants. Today the area’s gentrification is well and truly complete, with streams of visitors browsing world-class galleries like the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, and a flock of great cafes and restaurants, 798 buzzes all day and night with art fever. We’ll spend a day really exploring 798, taking in some of its coolest galleries, sketching along 京 its fascinating “skyways”, and participating in a fun, competitive sculpture hunt. SUMMER CAMP | INFORMATION PACKET | BEIJING 8 Highlights Dinner Story Take an adventure through Beijing’s narrow alleys, as your team seeks out the perfect restaurant in which to have your own dinner story. Throughout the course of the activity you’ll meet friendly locals, get a little silly, try the best food Beijing has to offer, and learn about some of the history and heritage of the dishes you try. Following dinner, participants will using their performance skills to tell their “story”! Human Centered Design Challenge 北 As our fun, exhilarating culminating activity, participants will learn the basics of Human Centered Design, as they engage in a real design challenge for a local entrepreneur! Beginning with an empathy mapping workshop, brainstorming ideas, then testing their prototypes, and finally presenting to a judging panel,, lucky participants may see their design come to life as it is ultimately 京 sold in stores! SUMMER CAMP | INFORMATION PACKET | BEIJING 10 Essentials Important Information What does this ‘camp’ include? • Bus transportation to/from a central pick-up and drop-off location in the city each day • First-aid trained Hutong guides and facilitators (1 guide for every 5 participants) • All meals (as indicated in itinerary), snacks, and drinking water • All activity and entrance fees • Basic travel liability insurance I’m interested in signing my child up, what is the next step? We request full payment to secure the booking, with free cancellation up to 7 days prior to the trip start date. We are keeping a close eye on how the evolving situation with COVID-19 is impacting local government regulations with travel and accommodation. Should our trip need to be cancelled due to changing restrictions, we will offer a full refund to all participants (less a 3% refund fee incurred by YooPay). We will keep parents and participants updated on the situation in the lead-up to the trip. How are you managing the potential risk with COVID-19? We are taking a two-pronged approach to mitigating the risk posed by COVID-19. First, and most Essentials importantly, we are implementing a thorough pre-camp screening policy, to verify that all attending participants, staff and local partners are not considered at risk of having contracted COVID-19.
