The village pub is applying to work in a country beneflce, also a great place to build friendships and but we felt a definite call. The same relationshipsl" skills are required as in towns. It's As we remember the 1o0th anniversary of the end of the First World War and see the tragedy of a lost generation of men, I am reminded of how many people said at the end of the war 'never again' Never again, yet every time we switch on'the news on our TVs, and radios or pick up a newspaper, we are bombarded by conflict, conflict between countries around the world. Since 1918 world- wide there has not been a single day without war.

War can seem so far away. Nations fighting for economic gain, territorial gain, religion, nationalism, or simply to defend themselves. This year however it has felt a little closer to home with the Novichock attacks in Salisbury. Also there have been an unprecedented number of conflicts on our national streets, with young people, especially males, losing their lives to gun and knife crime.

Having lived and worked in 2 war zones, firstly on the Thai Cambodian border and then later on the Pakistan Afghanistan border l've seen the horror and effects of war first hand, with civilians so often suffering equally as much as those in military roles. Death, injuries, people maimed and displaced, needing hope to believe that life can ever be good again. The horror and reality of war. ln August 1914 young men around the country signed up for military service. Great Britain had just declared war on Germany and scores of young men signed up, most thinking that the war would be over by Christmas and they would be safely home with their families for the festivities.

How wrong they were. Some returned early, shell shocked and injured while many died in the service of their country. Memorials in our churches bear witness to those who never returned. The Armistice was signed at 5 a.m. on November 1lth 1918 and among its 34 clauses, were the following that would come into effect within six hours of signing: o The termination of all hostilities on the Western Front (11 a.m.) o Surrender of arms: 5,000 artillery pieces, 25,000 machine guns, 3,000 mine launchers , L,7OO aircraft (including all night bombers), 5,000 railway locomotives, 150,000 railcars and 5,000 road trucks.

The surrender of arms reminds me of the words from Micah 4:3 in the bible - words often read on Remembrance Sunday. "They shall beat their swords into ploughsheres, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not li{t up sword ogainst nation, neither shallthey learn wor any more' Micah 4:3

The surrender of all weapons and all war ceasing. A sentiment that seems impossible and yet we iong for it. We pray for it. And in the mean time we honour those who have fought and died and those who continue to serve.

At the going down of the sun - We will remember them. tre\/ €tcrie- fyl"*x-y L q) grJ s o (u () q, FN o q) q g o 'd o I F (J ts o F X (J Q o () () o Q o E t) a 9E U)() Ei a a tri +r IJ] trr tr{ la *q) E] tlr A ^F9u 9 in O O lr, lat ir) (> O OO O o oo N c.l C) O cn re rao O o cao >= F o\ @ 00 o\ (}\ O\€ c- 00 .9t .9 s{ 'o ?l () (l) 9sr g a.E t\ e,s i8 aZ o r!, & z ;\ Eb f-I -i & L U ()tu uq EE 's o a0 dB Ea 6d tf-) (, E (J too :TL d8i. f-I c.) ca c.l e.t OcaC) 63D o? o\ o\ o\ o\ oo (r\ 0|o I I I I OOH - O O O O O= !l IJ -tr z :E 3.-_- & ,a lL m I a z r& t& z aa z a () I F I I I ta ';i a !o I fr q) E'=I li /' f-l q) ,c on U 6nl H a2 i) '=5 1 (l) 9, tr>, o Ht4 0 L o o q q ,39 I-I z €q) U F- () (, o () 5d ,= c0 ,a & ,o ro & (-) r0 o" Er,trrf a € U O a a' F 6 () o o U () (J O Q U U8 :d o t{ a rq O. t, tri F] a o" IIl 96 ol trr |r) rn () (> O 'e= U o O O c)o or5 * o c+l () ca co o c-) r.lo !r, H ao o' € o\ 00 o\ 00 (r\ oo aDl >) O O O O I I I O O# l+{ I obtz * Utua,2 U xr) -t-t<(D (l) IJE *rt-t{-o= .c. il I a Jr o a 3'Et r'rE CI Ir{ z a 3g' 2A u I I II r! This month's newsletter is all about flu - or rnore specifically the annual flu immunisation programme and why it matters.

The flu virus mutates rapidly, which is why.people need to be immunised every year. We are lucky in the UK as we can use data from Auslralia to guide planning in the UK, as theirwinter matches our summer and comes 6 months earlier.

The immunisation is produced in labs using the freshest eMdence on wtrich strain of flu is mosl likely to become virulenl each year. lt can be quite an anxious time waiting for our delivery of the flu vaccines as it is such a fast tumaround from identifying what strain of flu should be in the vaccine, to the labs producing the vaccines, to getting them distributed to the whole of the UK.

Each year there are refinements in hor best to immunise the population. The main difference this year is that we now have 2 types of adult vaccine. One - called trivalent has been allocated to over 65s based on evfuIence that this age group will respond best to this particular form of vaccine. Another - called quadrivalent will be age for at- risk adults under age 65. The third type is a nasal spray of live vaccine. This is used for childnen (aged 2-17), as they respond best to this form of the vaccine.

A common response from patients when offered a flu jab is "Oh, I don't need one I neverget flu". Please can you considerthe foltowing message - some people can become caniers or reservoirs of flu virus without showing symptoms, This increases the risk of other people contmcting flu from you - and these people may become very poorly if they contract flu. lt is why atl heafth workers are immunised against flu - we have many @ntacts every day with people who will not cope well wtth flu, and it is part of our care forothers to make sure we don't pass the infection on.

Another oommon response is "l had the flu jab once and I got the flu'. The flu jab for edults contains dead (or more accurately deac'tivated) virus. All it does is expose your immune sys{em to the proteins in the flu virus so that 'when you come into contac* with the actual flu infection you are already several steps ahead in mounting the immune response which willkilloffthe infedion. You cant catch flu from dead virus.

We can all do our bit forthe whole community if we have the flu jab - imagine that the next penion you stand next to at the supermarket is on chemotherapy, or is a toddlerwho is too young to be immunised - by having the flu jab you willbe helping towards what is called 'held immunity'. Target immunisation rates are set al75o/o for alleligible populations and this will reduce the circulating virus levels. This is an indirect way of protecling people from flu, but relies on enough people in the wider community taking up the offer of the flu jab to be effedive.

A reminder - these age orouo,s are routinely offered the flu vaccination a Adults 65 and over (induding adults over 18 at risk of flu) a Pregnant women a Children aged 2 and 3 a Children in reception dass and schoolyears 1,2,3,4 and 5 o Children aged 2 to 17 years at risk of flu.

And what are the risk orouos? I think the best way to think of this, is that these are people for whom develofing pneumonia would be dangerous or dfficult to recover from, and may require hospital admission a Respiratory diseases - asthma when on regular inhaled steroids, COPD, bronchiedasis a Cardiac disease - such as heart failure a Chronic kidney disease a Chronic liver disease such as hepatitis a Neurologicalconditions such as MS, Parldnson's, motor neurone disease a Diabetes a Previous splenectomy a A weakened immune system - HlV, regular steroid tablets, chemotherapy, DMARDs such as methotrexate a Being seriously ovenreight (BMl of 40 or above)

At Spring Orchard surgery we cunently have 729 patients who are eligible forflu immunisation. Please come along to the dedicated immunisation session m 13m October (Saturday morning 0g:00 to 11:00) so you can get your flu iab in time for winter.

Please note: Children and under 18s will be invited to a separate clinic at Wilton Old Orchard surgery as allthrl nasal spray vaccines are being stored there. MEETAND EAT

I heard on the news today that the government wants to fortify all flour with folic acid to try and reduce the increasing incidence of spina bifida in newborn babies. Folic acid is the manufactured form of folate (vitamin 89) which is used in supplements. Folate itself is found in leafy greens especially dark green plants. This is where it gets its name from - folate/foliage. lt is also found in legumes (beans, peas and lentils), citrus fruits, egg yolks, asparagus, beetroot, broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

It has been known for many years that a low level of folate in early pregnancy is an important risk factor for the birth of a baby with spina bifida - but there are others. These include: Family history, some medications taken by the mother (especially anti-convulsants), maternal diabetes which may cause poor blood sugar control/raised blood sugar levels, pre-pregnancy obesity, raised body temperature in early pregnancy (from fever/saunas etc) and lower socioeconomic status - where the link may be inability to afford adequate nutrition. A developing foetus needs all the nutrition it can get in order to build a healthy body and brain and will rob its mother if she is not supplying sufficient via her diet. Many a pregnant mum who says that pregnancy has made her "stupid" may well be losing essential omega 3 fats from her brain in order that the baby may develop its own.

As I have said so often before, getting nutritious food nowadays can be extremely difficult because of industrialized/chemicalized farming and food processing and it doesn't seem sensible to supplement one single vitamin rather than tackling the "disaster area" that our food chain has become - though it may be a useful "stop-gap" until we can all buy food which we know will do us good rather than harm. Sadly, there is no way to tell which foods these are today, because they are all presented to look wonderful and we have no way of knowing whether they are nutraent depleted - other than taking the trouble to buy from a grower/producer who does the job right and will answer the questions we ask about this.

Two of the other risk factors noted above (l got the list from the Mayo clinic in the USA - and the NHS information is almost identical) are pre-pregnancy obesity and poor blood sugar control which are entirely food related. I have written often about refined carbohydrates/starches which after digestion, rapidly arrive in the bloodstream as glucose and confuse the pancreas into producing too much insulin to deal with the excess blood sugar. This can then cause a drop in blood sugar - and eventual "insulin resistance" if this happens regularly. lnsulin resistance is now recognized as being involved in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Our advised low fat/high carbohydrate diets are implicated in this.

This is beautifully illustrated, with appropriate graphs, in a study done by a fellow student on my nutrition course with himself as the subject: On day one, after fasting for 18 hours, he ate a large amount of white potato. mashed with butter and accompanied by some oily fish (fat and protein). His blood sugar measurements rose a little and then returned to normal in a gentle curve- justas it should. On daytwo (afterthe same length of fasting) he ate the same amount of potato accompanied by some carrots to make up the same bulk (no fat or protein). His blood sugar rose rapidly, far above normal, making him "sweaty" and then dropped rapidly below normal levels making him feel "weak and shaky". Potato, a very starchy food, digests quickly - just like white flour/white rice/sugar products.

Hember of the Pre-softod Learning Atliance We're delighted to report on another successfulsutton Mandeville Horticultural Society Summer Show which this year was held on 1't September in the Fovant Village Hall.

Whilst the big challenge to growers in 2017 had been the amount of rainfall, this year of course it was allabout sun, heat and lack of rain. But we weren't complaining, and the excellent number and quality of show entries suggested no-one else was either, even if one or two specific categories had clearly suffered - notably onions a nd shallots (and sausage rolls?!).

The prize cups were presented by David Willis, Chair of the SMHS, with the Banksian Medal and Sidney Mullins Cup going to Bernard Allnutt, who dominated the Vegetable and Fruit categories, the Resident's Cup being awarded to lvy Spencer for the most points in the Flowers categories, and the President's Trophy - for Flower Arrangements - going jointly to Sue Dixon and Cynnie Willis.

The Challenge Cup for Photography was awarded to Emma Firth, the Jubilee Rose Bowl for the most points in Domestic categories went to Jane Deverell and the Lappage Cup for the best Village Tray of Vegetables was won by Ralph Dicker, who was also awarded Best in Show.

The most points in the children's categories were won by Poppy Firth who was awarded the Mandeville Cup, and the Mrs Lodge Silver Plate for the winner of the Prize Recipe went to Merryn Smee.

See the attached sheet for the full list of winners by class.

Our sincere thanks to everybody who entered and visited the show this year, to everyone who generously donated raffle prizes - including the very lovely prize donated by The Greater Good pub - and to everyone who kindly helped out by moving furniture, setting up, clearing up and all of the other jobs that go towards making this a such a lovely local event. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
