Greetings from Graham

Dear Friends,

To be a Pilchard??! I suspect I am not the only person reading this who remembers singing the hymn ‘He who would valiant be’ at school. I wonder if others also had the experience of those at the back of the hall bellowing ‘To be a pilchard’ as the last line of each verse?

A pilgrim is simply someone on a journey. The Pilgrim Course takes us on a journey exploring what it means to be a Christian by looking at some of the things we do in church. It assumes very little understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith, so is ideal for those who want to begin finding out. It is also great for those who have been coming to church for some time, but wonder what lies behind all those words.

It begins with the promises that were said when we were baptised (christened). For many readers, these were words that we will not remember hearing, as we may well have been very young. For other readers who have not been baptised, these are words that will never have been used by us or on our behalf. What does it mean to say ‘I turn to Christ’? Who is Jesus anyway? What was he like?

The style of Pilgrim is not like some other courses. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. It uses the Bible and input from experienced travellers as resources on our journey.

We are planning to run two parallel courses, beginning in August. One will be on a Friday morning at 11am, and the other on Sunday evenings at 7.30pm. They will meet roughly fortnightly. Although we imagine that the two groups will work independently, they will cover the same material in the same week. If you were unable to meet one week at the normal time for you, you could go along to the other group that week.

If this sounds like something you might like to try, do call me or send an email or note. We’d love to share this Pilgrim journey with you.

And finally… TEACHER: Tracey, go to the map and find North America. TRACEY: Here it is! TEACHER: Correct. Now, class, who discovered America? CLASS: TRACEY.

Your friend in Christ Graham Rev Graham Perryman 3

Green Fingers ( from the not so green fingered) July is the time for my annual visit to the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show which I love. I find it more relaxed than Chelsea and a great opportunity to buy and discuss plants with the experts, but generally the show gardens are not quite as ambitious as Chelsea. I always come home with a trolley laden with plants! Top tips for July: 1 Check for signs of Clematis wilt. 2 Continue watering all tubs, containers and baskets in hot dry weather and feed once a week with a liquid feed. 3 Clear any blanket weed and duck weed from your ponds. 4 Harvest all vegetables before they become too big and tough. 5 Deadhead Delphiniums and Lupins to encourage more flower spikes to form. 6 Enjoy sitting in your gardens although I always think of the Rudyard Kipling poem : Our is a garden and such gardens are not made by singing “oh how beautiful " and sitting in the shade. News from

As I write this at the end of June, the property is alive with activity, including phase two of our restaurant refurbishment project with this phase’s planned completion by the end of July. This project looks to improve the flow, speed and experience for visitors in our restaurant. Later in the year but before the autumn, we will be carrying out some internal decoration and are hoping to install a couple of pieces of play equipment for families.

We are also in the process of carrying out conservation work to the Obelisk on the estate thanks to a generous donation which has made this project possible. This work includes both re-gilding the sun at the top so that it shines bright once again, as well as essential stonework repairs to the Obelisk itself. Again, it is hoped that this work will be complete by the end of July, but is very weather dependent.

Across the property we are already thinking beyond the summer and looking forward to our art exhibition with Anouk Mercier. Anouk has been working with Stourhead as her inspiration throughout the year and her piece of art inspired by this place will unveiled in September and then be on display in the Temple of Flora until later be on in the year.

We are also excited about our autumn and Christmas offer this year and we are busy behind the scenes looking for ways to make the experience even better for visitors, including a new leaf story for visitors to enjoy around the garden.

We are so lucky to have Stourhead on our doorstep; a nicer place to volunteer would be hard to find. We would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in volunteering with us, be it as garden guide, room guide or raffle ticket seller (in the garden). For a full list of available roles, please contact Jean on 01747 841152 or email [email protected].

If you want to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, please do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

News from Parish Councils

Bourton It has been a very busy time for the Parish Council, with three meetings taking place in one evening on 21st May. Within these meetings there was, among many other things, a short presentation from Dorset Police and Dorset Road Safe; Simon Firbank was re-elected as Chairman and Mike Withers was re- elected as Vice-Chairman; BPC year end accounts were agreed and signed off and The Chairman gave his annual report. It was also agreed at this meeting that the Parish Bier, currently residing in St George's church, would be placed with the Museum. This was to ensure the safe-keeping of this very historic item which needed a new home due to the planned improvement works within the church. The next parish council meetings will be on Monday 23rd July, and Monday 20th August, both at 7.30 pm in the village hall Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709 557

Kilmington There is not much to report this month but I can confirm that I am continuing with the handover of documents from Lindsey Wood and setting a system up of my own with the limited space I have available for Parish Council work in my home. I am hoping that the Play Area Committee will be able to furnish me with the two quotes needed for the new swings so that I can complete the grant application form soon and hopefully have the swings installed before the start of the school summer holidays. The Parish Steward is again in our village on Monday 6 July and we hope can concentrate his efforts on pot holes. However, residents are reminded that any member of the public can report highways issues including defective, obscured road signs and manhole covers, potholes, blocked road drains on the My Wiltshire website: www.wiltshire.gov.uk/parkingtransportandstreets/roadshighwaystreetcare/myw iltshirelogin.htm The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on 13th September and all are welcome to attend. Ruth Burrows, Clerk to Kilmington Parish Council

Stourton with Gasper There are still a couple of Highways issues that the Parish Council are trying to resolve - double white lines on the stretch of the B3092 from Stourton Lane to the High Street and Bells Lane signage especially where the houses are

/ continued on page 15 ..... 14 located to slow down traffic on this busy section of road; we hope that by the time of our next PC meeting we will have some positive news to report. However, we are pleased to confirm that all the white line repainting in Stourton Lane has now been completed. If you have read the minutes of our May meeting, you will have seen that Stourhead Western have asked the Parish Council its views on a proposal to build 4 two bedroom bungalows on Bonham horse field. The application would be an exception site application for affordable rent housing for the over 50s. The Parish Council resolved to investigate the procedure for conducting a local housing needs survey. From 30 July it will be possible to recycle more plastic, food and drink cartons so that items such as yoghurt pots, plastic trays, margarine tubs, ice cream tubs, juice (Tetrapaks) will be able to be dropped into the blue lidded plastics recycle bin. A poster will be displayed on our Stourhead noticeboard and a leaflet will be circulated during the next few weeks to high light the changes but collection days will stay the same as now. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Thursday 30 August at 7.00 pm – this is different from the date stated in the last minutes. Ruth Burrows, Clerk to Stourton with Gasper Parish Council

Zeals There has not been another meeting of the Parish Council since the last publication so news this month will be less substantial than normal, although councillors have still been busy with appropriate matters such as assessing 4 planning applications recently, and investigating sites for our new Speed Indicator Device. It would be well worth the while for readers to examine the hugofox.com/communities/zeals website as the minutes of the Annual Parish Meeting have just been up-loaded onto that website: a substantial document running to many pages, but well worth examining just to discover the wealth of activities within Zeals and what has been achieved over the past year. Also, I would recommend that parents in particular look through the Seeds4Success website to find out about the wealth of activities provided by this organisation for young people covering Mere and surrounding villages. Transport is not normally a problem for this group as collection and delivery can be easily organised. They do have special activities for young people operating during the summer months, and all year too. The next formal meeting of the Parish Council is scheduled for 7pm on Thursday 12 July. Plus, a reminder, the Defibrillator Awareness Training evening is Tuesday 9 October, starting at 7pm in the Village Hall. Graham Edgar, Parish Clerk

The Kilmington Ball The Kilmington Ball was held on Friday 8th June in perfect weather. It was a fantastic event in a rural setting - a mighty fund raising event for such a small area. Several thousands of pounds would have been raised for The Tower Society. The evening included: Champagne Reception, Jazz Band, Black Tie Dinner, Magician, Band and Disco, Raffle and an Auction (a week in a house on the continent made £700 on its own). Picture/text by George Jeans

The above appeared in South West Wiltshire Our Com- munity Matters. Around 180 people came to the Ball which was held at Cote Farm Kilmington. The Committee is extremely grateful to everyone who came, to the legions of people who helped and donated and/or who supported the event in any way. The reaction at the time and since has been enormously positive and complimentary and the Committee is very grateful for that too. Over £6,500 was raised.
