I suspect I am not the only person reading this who remembers singing the hymn ‘He who would valiant be’ at school. I wonder if others also had the experience of those at the back of the hall bellowing ‘To be a pilchard’ as the last line of each verse? A pilgrim is simply someone on a journey. The Pilgrim Course takes us on a journey exploring what it means to be a Christian by looking at some of the things we do in church. It assumes very little understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith, so is ideal for those who want to begin finding out. It is also great for those who have been coming to church for some time, but wonder what lies behind all those words. It begins with the promises that were said when we were baptised (christened). For many readers, these were words that we will not remember hearing, as we may well have been very young. For other readers who have not been baptised, these are words that will never have been used by us or on our behalf. What does it mean to say ‘I turn to Christ’? Who is Jesus anyway? What was he like? The style of Pilgrim is not like some other courses. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. It uses the Bible and input from experienced travellers as resources on our journey. We are planning to run two parallel courses, beginning in August. One will be on a Friday morning at 11am, and the other on Sunday evenings at 7.30pm. They will meet roughly fortnightly. Although we imagine that the two groups will work independently, they will cover the same material in the same week. If you were unable to meet one week at the normal time for you, you could go along to the other group that week. If this sounds like something you might like to try, do call me or send an email or note. We’d love to share this Pilgrim journey with you. And finally… TEACHER: Tracey, go to the map and find North America. TRACEY: Here it is! TEACHER: Correct. Now, class, who discovered America? CLASS: TRACEY. He is shown here with present Chairman, Catherine Spencer (L) and his wife (R). Photo by Richard Higgs Green Fingers ( from the not so green fingered) July is the time for my annual visit to the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show which I love. I find it more relaxed than Chelsea and a great opportunity to buy and discuss plants with the experts, but generally the show gardens are not quite as ambitious as Chelsea. I always come home with a trolley laden with plants! Top tips for July: 1 Check for signs of Clematis wilt. 2 Continue watering all tubs, containers and baskets in hot dry weather and feed once a week with a liquid feed. 3 Clear any blanket weed and duck weed from your ponds. 4 Harvest all vegetables before they become too big and tough. 5 Deadhead Delphiniums and Lupins to encourage more flower spikes to form. 6 Enjoy sitting in your gardens although I always think of the Rudyard Kipling poem : Our England is a garden and such gardens are not made by singing “oh how beautiful " and sitting in the shade. This project looks to improve the flow, speed and experience for visitors in our restaurant. Later in the year but before the autumn, we will be carrying out some internal decoration and are hoping to install a couple of pieces of play equipment for families. We are also in the process of carrying out conservation work to the Obelisk on the estate thanks to a generous donation which has made this project possible. This work includes both re-gilding the sun at the top so that it shines bright once again, as well as essential stonework repairs to the Obelisk itself.
