DOCTOR WHO - it's a question and a statement... Compiled by James Deacon [2013] http://aetw.org/omega.html DOCTOR WHO - it's a Question, and a Statement ... Every now and then, I read comments from Whovians about how the programme is called: "Doctor Who" - and how you shouldn't write the title as: "Dr. Who". Also, how the central character is called: "The Doctor", and should not be referred to as: "Doctor Who" (or "Dr. Who" for that matter) But of course, the Truth never quite that simple As the Evidence below will show... * * * * * * * http://aetw.org/omega.html THE PROGRAMME Yes, the programme is titled: "Doctor Who", but from the very beginning – in fact from before the beginning, the title has also been written as: “DR WHO”. From the BBC Archive Original 'treatment' (Proposal notes) for the 1963 series: Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/doctorwho/6403.shtml?page=1 http://aetw.org/omega.html And as to the central character ... Just as with the programme itself - from before the beginning, the central character has also been referred to as: "DR. WHO". [From the same original proposal document:] http://aetw.org/omega.html In the BBC's own 'Radio Times' TV guide (issue dated 14 November 1963), both the programme and the central character are called: "Dr. Who" On page 7 of the BBC 'Radio Times' TV guide (issue dated 21 November 1963) there is a short feature on the new programme: Again, the programme is titled: "DR. WHO" "In this series of adventures in space and time the title-role [i.e.

  • Eco-Activism in Doctor Who During the 1970S
Author: Jørgensen, Dolly. Title: A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s A Blueprint for Destruction: Eco-Activism in Doctor Who during the 1970s Dolly Jørgensen Umeå University In 1972, the editors of a two-year old environmentalist magazine named The Ecologist published a special issue titled A Blueprint for Survival, which subsequently sold over 750,000 copies as a book. This manifesto of the early eco-activist movement lamented the unsustainable industrial way of life that had developed after WWII and proposed a new 'stable society' with minimal ecological destruction, conservation of materials and energy, zero population growth, and a social system that supported individual fulfillment under the first three conditions (Goldsmith et al. 30). Blueprint received tremendous attention in the British press and became a seminal text for the British Green movement (Veldman 227–236). This environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s was substantially different from traditional environmentalists of the early twentieth century who tended to be conservationists interested in wildlife and landscapes. The new environmentalists, whom Meredith Veldman labels eco-activists, "condemned not only environmental degradation but also the society that did the degrading" (210). They combined critiques against pollution with calls for limited population growth and refinement of social systems. Although the early eco-activist movement in Britain petered out politically in the late 1970s (it arose again in the mid-1980s), its radical environmental ideas had begun to permeate society. Vol 3 , At the same time that eco-activists were establishing their agenda, the BBC serial No television drama Doctor Who was enjoying its successful establishment in British 2 popular culture.

  • Doctor Who: the Horns of Nimon
DOCTOR WHO AND THE HORNS OF NIMON By TERRANCE DICKS Based on the BBC television serial by Anthony Read by arrangement with the British Broadcasting Corporation Prologue The Coming of the Nimon Next to the crumbling Palace of the Emperor, on the edge of the sprawling ruins that were the capital of Skonnos, there rose the Power Complex. It was a gleaming, metallic, star-shaped edifice, dominated by the two enormous horns that rose from its central unit. All around, mile upon mile of ruined and half-ruined buildings bore silent witness to the end of a once-great star empire. No enemy had ever defeated the Skonnons. They destroyed themselves. An aggressive race, with a talent for war and conquest, they had discovered high technology and space flight much earlier than their neighbouring planets. Armed with superior weaponry they had swept over the galaxy in an expanding wave of conquest. In an astonishingly short time they were the masters of a hundred worlds, the famous First Skonnan Empire. The aggressive streak that had brought them success was to cause their downfall. The noble families fell to fighting amongst themselves, Emperor followed Emperor in quick succession, rival Emperors set up against each other, and soon the Skonnan Empire, like ancient Rome before it, collapsed from within. Planet after planet took advantage of the confusion to throw off the Skonnan yoke, the occupying armies retreated, and the last devastating civil war was fought on Skonnos itself. It left the planet in ruins. When the fighting ended, a handful of well-protected senior officers commanding a few squads of Skonnan troops were the sole survivors in a shattered capital, victors in a civil war that had ended through sheer exhaustion.

  • Doctor Who: the Nightmare of Eden
DOCTOR WHO AND NIGHTMARE OF EDEN By TERRANCE DICKS 1 Warp Smash It should have been impossible - but it happened. So enormous are the distances between the stars that even at light-speed, journeys of hundreds, even thousands, of years are necessary to cross them. Only the invention of warp drive made interstellaf travel a practical possibility. Warp drive enables space ships to leave normal space and enter hyperspace, travelling colossal distances in a flash. Once man discovered warp drive his space ships spread out over his own galaxy in a wave and even began exploring the galaxies beyond. In time interstellar travel became routine - but there were still dangers. One of them was warp smash. A ship tries to leave hyperspace at exactly the same point occupied by another; two sets of atoms and molecules try to fill the same position in space and time; the result, instant mutual annihilation. However, there were exceptions, freak accidents in which the impossible happened. This was to be one of them. The Intersellar Cruise Liner Empress flashed through hyperspace en route for the pleasure-planet Azure, .sun-kissed jewel of the galaxy, where her hundreds of tourist passengers could indulge themselves in all the pleasures of warm seas, perpetually blue skies, and long beaches of fine blue sand. Their journey was almost over. Soon the Empress would emerge into normal space and enter landing orbit around the planet. In the big old-fashioned control room of the Empress Captain Rigg was feeling worried, and was trying to work out why. There didn't seem to be anything to worry about.

  • Doctor Who: the Enemy of the World
In the year 2030 only one man seems to know what action to take when the world is hit by a series of terrible natural disasters. Salamander’s success in handling these monumental problems has brought him enormous power. From the moment the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria land on an Australian beach, they are caught up in a struggle for world domination - a struggle in which the Doctor’s startling resemblance to Salamander plays a vital role.
