BIOGRAPHY OF EMILY HAMPER "The extremely difficult piano part was perfectly realized by Emily Hamper, a very authoritative accompanist throughout the concert." (Concertonet, Paris, January 2014) Emily Hamper has earned an excellent reputation for her exceptional skills as a vocal coach and accompanist. Singers from her coaching studio perform with major opera companies and symphony orchestras around the world. Within an international career spanning twenty years, she has worked as a rehearsal pianist, coach, and assistant conductor for many prominent opera companies and organizations. Highly sought-after as a collaborator for voice recitals, she has recently appeared in performance for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s “Virée Classique”, L'Opéra National de Paris, and Music Toronto. In January 2017 she partners baritone Phillip Addis in recital at the Canadian Opera Company. Other performances include recitals for the Queensland Music Festival (Australia), Calgary Opera, Festival Orford, Stratford Summer Music, and many other venues in Canada, the USA, and Europe. In 2011 she was awarded the Best Collaborative Pianist Prize at the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition and accompanied thirteen performances across Canada on the National Winner's Tour. Performances have been broadcast on CBC Radio, Radio-Canada, Classical 96.3 FM and Vermont Public Radio. Engaged as a répétiteur and official audition accompanist by Calgary Opera, l'Opéra de Montréal, Opera Atelier and Pacific Opera Victoria, Ms. Hamper was production director for a performance based on Manon at the Muskoka Opera Festival in 2013. Her genuine interest in new music has resulted in engagements with Soundstreams Canada and Tapestry Opera, the workshopping of a new opera with Manitoba Opera, and the commission of a cycle of four songs by composer Erik Ross and poet Zachariah Wells. -

In an unprecedented collaboration, Vancouver Opera joins four other Canadian opera companies as they co-present this opera reaching more opera patrons than ever before. Acclaimed director Alan Gauthier sets La Traviata in the decadent music hall scene of 1920s’ Paris. The opera begins when the curtain rises on Violetta Valéry (the ‘fallen woman’ of the opera’s title), a famous Parisian courtesan who is consumed by love and a life-threatening illness. At a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who proposes a toast to true love. However, darker undercurrents are running beneath the glamorous scene—there are subtle hints of Violetta’ doomed love for Alfredo and the hostility the lovers will encounter when they attempt to break with society’s norms. Pop culture fans will find the nuanced inspiration of La Traviata in Moulin Rouge and Pretty Woman. “We’re thrilled to be kicking off the season with a new production of one of opera’s best-loved classics,” said Kim Gaynor, Vancouver Opera General Director. “This is the 11th time Vancouver Opera has mounted a main- stage production of La Traviata but the first time we are collaborating with other Canadian opera companies to bring this timeless treasure to the stage. -

Annual Field Report 2020 operaamerica.org/AFR From the President and CEO n the course of a normal year, I participate in about a dozen workshops for opera company boards. Whether they are to launch a strategic planning process or prepare for a leadership transition, discussion of a customized benchmarking report is always a featured element of the day. Each analysis compares the income and expense of the subject company to those Iof other companies of similar size. The data is drawn from our Professional Opera Survey — the same data that underpins this Annual Field Report. But 2020 has been anything but normal. Please note that this report focuses on FY2019, completed before the onset of COVID-19. Since March 2020, we have worked extremely hard to track the changes to budgets made in the wake of the pandemic. We also will monitor budgets for future years to learn about the financial dynamics of gradual reopening. The analysis of this data will inform our advocacy to government agencies, private funders, company trustees, and other stakeholders about the urgency of providing support to opera companies and their artists currently, and over the next several seasons. COVID hasn’t diminished the number of my presentations to boards, though; Zoom has provided a wonderful platform for delivering reports remotely. The health crisis of 2020 makes it more important than ever to have a firm foundation from which to plan future budgets. Although member company data in the Annual Field Report are organized by OPERA America’s five budget groups, it is still possible to learn by comparing individual opera company finances with others of roughly similar size. -
