February 11, 2016 The Honorable Mr. Barack Obama President of the United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President, As members of parliament from Southeast Asia, dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights, we write to express our desire for you to make discussion of human rights and the democratic aspirations of the people of ASEAN a priority during the upcoming summit at the Sunnylands estate in California on 15-16 February 2016. As you are surely aware, democracy is struggling in Southeast Asia. Many countries in our region have taken dramatic steps backward in the past two years. While Southeast Asia appeared to be on the cusp of a genuine political transformation only a few years ago, more recently the region has instead witnessed military takeovers, the rollback of fundamental rights, intensifying government-sponsored discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and the increasing persecution of activists and opposition voices, including fellow parliamentarians. These setbacks constitute a fundamental threat to the future of the ASEAN Community and the US relationship with it. While we recognize and understand your administration’s desire to strengthen trade and security cooperation with Southeast Asian governments, we urge you to proceed with caution. Human rights, democracy, and basic dignity cannot take a backseat to economic or security prerogatives. Open dialogue on fundamental political and rights-based questions is vital to ensuring the sustainability of bilateral relationships and promoting broad-based benefits of trans-Pacific cooperation. When you sit down with ASEAN leaders in California, we urge you to press them on unfulfilled human rights commitments and to directly raise specific concerns with them.

Ph.D. August 2004. Telecommunications Managing the Content of Malaysian Television Drama: Producers, Gatekeepers and the Barisan Nasional Government (303 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew McDaniel Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how drama television content is managed in Malaysia. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony.

100 cops to be deployed for Dr M’s Pekan gig MalaysiaKini.com 27 Februari 2018 The police are ready for any possibility in relation to Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad's scheduled visit to the Pekan parliamentary constituency tomorrow, said Pekan district police chief Amran Sidek. "The police are ready to face any possibility," he told Malaysiakini revealing that one hundred police personnel will be deployed to monitor the situation. He also confirmed that a notice has been submitted by the programme's organisers informing the police of the event and its schedule. "The organisers have been interviewed and they were given 13 conditions that must be followed," said Amran, citing Section 15 of the Peaceful Assembly Act. Pahang Pakatan Harapan secretary Kamarzaman Mohamed Yunus told Malaysiakini that he had obtained a police permit to hold the programme. "We just got the permit. I just got back from the Pekan district police headquarters," he said. Pekan Umno division committee member Abdul Rahim Yahya had before this told Malaysiakini that it was better for the programme to be cancelled as there "will be fights". Rahim said many youths in the area had approached him about Mahathir's visit and they were planning to do “many things”. He also claimed that no permission was obtained by the organisers to hold Mahathir's programme in the area. Pahang Pakatan Harapan chairperson Fauzi Abdul Rahman had taken Rahim to task for his warning against Mahathir, adding that other parties could also find gangsters if such threats were condoned. Mahathir is expected to arrive in the Chini area in the afternoon tomorrow, before going on a walkabout at an Orang Asli settlement there.

  • Fauzi to Submit Resignation Letter Today
29 MAR 2001 Fauzi-Resignation FAUZI TO SUBMIT RESIGNATION LETTER TODAY KUANTAN, March 30 (Bernama) -- State Assemblyman for Beserah Datuk Fauzi Abdul Rahman will submit his letter of resignation to vacate his state assembly seat to Pahang Umno Liaison chairman Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob later today. Fauzi, 55, said he decided to vacate the Beserah state assembly seat after the majority of the Umno branches in Beserah did not nominate him to defend the post of Kuantan Umno division head in the party election next month. "This means that there are Umno branches in Beserah which have rejected my leadership. When Umno branches in Beserah have rejected me, it implies that they don't endorse what I have done for the constituency and reject my services or what I have done," he said at a media conference after meeting Adnan at the Menteri Besar's official residence, here. It is learnt that Fauzi's decision to tender his resignation letter was made after he was said to have failed to obtain at least 13 nominations from the 65 Umno branches in the Kuantan division to enable him to defend his post as the division head. A candidate must garner 20 per cent nominations from the total number of branches in the division to enable him to contest for the post of division head. According to the Kuantan Umno division office, Fauzi had so far managed to secure only nine nominations to contest for the post of Kuantan Umno head while Kuantan vice-head Datuk Faisal Abdullah received 29 nominations and deputy head Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat had 20 nominations.

  • Malaysia Brunei Malaysia at a Glance: 2001-02
COUNTRY REPORT Malaysia Brunei Malaysia at a glance: 2001-02 OVERVIEW In the wake of the departure of the finance minister, Daim Zainuddin, in May and the takeover of the finance portfolio by the prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, the pace of corporate restructuring has been stepped up, especially in those companies that had been shielded by Mr Daim. A one-year target has been set for the solution of the corporate debt problem. Meanwhile, the economic outlook continues to deteriorate, although the government is hoping that the economy will begin to grow again in the fourth quarter of this year. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that real GDP growth will remain low in 2001 and 2002. Key changes from last month Political outlook • Accelerated corporate reform, growing repression and tightened control are part of the process by which the 76-year-old Dr Mahathir is re- asserting his control over Malaysia's politics and resisting pressure for his retirement. Economic policy outlook • Additional fiscal stimulus is increasingly likely to be provided by the 2002 budget, to be presented in late October. The government's 2001 real GDP growth target, currently at 5-6% for 2001, will be revised down. We forecast real GDP growth of just 0.5% in 2001. Economic forecast • Inflationary pressures are diminishing further. We have lowered our consumer price inflation forecast for 2002 to 1.7% from 1.9% previously, after an expected outcome of 1.5% in 2001. The future shock is reverbratmg here and now, particularly along the shores of nations visited by the Pacific and Indian Oceans and surrounding seas. In the face of this onslaught, what steps shouLd Asia- Pacific nations take to protect their social and cultural heritages? Should they discard that part of their heritages which have been exposed by the new communication technology as being anachronistic and outmoded? In the name of communication for development, what social and cultural values should the mass media (particularly television) strengthen and promote? In particular, what can Asia-Pacific nations do (collectively or individually) to ensure that the growing phenomenon of transnational satellite broadcasting does not become a monster that will swallow up national television organisations? This paper attempts to answer the above questions baaed upon the Malaysian perspective.

  • FAUZI AKUR KEPADA APA JUGA TINDAKAN PARTI (Bernama 08/05
