The Wildcats had perhaps their most successful season ever in 1989, winning a school-record 42 games and the program’s first-ever Big East title. In the NCAA East Regional, Villanova won three straight games and was just one win away from reaching the College World Series before being eliminated by Miami. Two key members of the 1989 team were Rafael Novoa (left) and Gene Schall. Novoa was 10-3 with four saves and a 3.02 ERA in 19 appearances, and was named first team All-Big East. The Wildcats earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Eastern Regional with their first-ever Big East Conference Tournament Championship title. After a first round loss to Miami in the NCAA Eastern Regionals, Villanova rode a three-game winning streak to the NCAA Regional title game where they would face Miami with a chance to go to the College World Series. The Wildcats fell to the Hurricanes by a 4-1 margin, but came closer than any Villanova team ever had to the illustrious College Baseball World Series. Of the nine former Wildcats who played professionally in 2005, pitcher Mike Porzio is the only one who has reached the major leagues. Porzio appeared in 51 games during parts of three seasons in the majors with the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox.

Jim Baxter pitched for the Lowell Spinners in the New York Penn League in 2005. After a successful season pitching for the Wildcats, Baxter was drafted in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Boston Red Sox. Page 31 VILLANOVA BASEBALL HISTORY

Below: The 1952 team was the first ever at Villanova to reach the postseason. Led by Arthur Mahan, the Wildcats earned a berth in the NCAA Regional Playoffs, where they beat St. John’s before falling to Penn State.

The 1885 season was one of the earliest of Villanova baseball. The school was known as Villanova College then, as the “VC” logo on the uniforms in this team picture indicate. This team photo was taken in a field alongside what is now Lancaster Avenue in front of the main campus.

Left: As head coach from 1973-85, Larry Shane led Villanova to 153 victories. His best teams came in a three-year span from 1979-81, when the Wildcats aver- aged 19 wins per season with a .671 win- ning percentage.

Below: The 1989 Wildcats won the first Big East title in school history. Then, in the NCAA Tournament, Villanova came within one win of the College World Series before being eliminated.
