Robinson, Freeholder Sara Sooy, Freeholder May 28, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Somerset County Senior Centers Announce June Activities The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services announce the June program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations before 10 a.m. on the previous business day. Invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center’s many programs! If you drive or have a ride, you can go to any center of your choice. Knitting/Crocheting/Stitching Club – Monday, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to join. Bring your knitting/crocheting/stitching project or come and learn something new. Make wonderful new friends while enjoying a hobby that you love. This spring we encourage you to donate your blankets and other items to the Menlo Park Veterans Memorial Home as a way to give back to the community. All items will be gathered up at the Senior Wellness Center and donated every month. Bridge Club – Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain to keep it alert and helps your memory stay sharp. (More) 1 SOMERSET COUNTY SENIOR WELLNESS CENTER AT BASKING RIDGE – CONT’D Take Control with Exercise – Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. & Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. This ongoing exercise program is for all levels of skill and ability and can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Strengthen core muscles, improve flexibility and balance while boosting your stamina. Participants must register to attend. **Call 908-204-3435 for more information.** Monthly Book Club – Every Third Thursday, 12:30 p.m. On June 20, join us for a discussion of the current book to be discussed “The Wedding” by Nicholas Sparks; then select the next book to be read. New members are welcome! Dancercise – Monday, 10:30 a.m. Here’s an innovative and fun way to exercise! This low-impact aerobics class is great for the heart! Dance to popular music that will keep you moving. Start with a warm up to help you avoid injury; then dance to the beat of the music and finish with a cool-down. Sneakers are required. **Cost is $40 for the eight-week program; the next session begins June 17. Register by June 7. Call 908-204-3435 for more information. ** Tai Chi for Health (Beginners) – Wednesday, 1 p.m. Learn the core of tai chi in this class, which will help participants improve their strength, balance and flexibility. Participants will learn new vocabulary, different ways of moving, and develop postures that will help them master more advanced forms of tai chi. The basic form of this art will help enable participants to experience considerable improvement in their physical ability. **Suggested donation of $16 for the eight-week program; the next session begins June 26. Register by June 17. Call 908-204-3435 for more information.** Zumba Gold – Build cardiovascular health with dance moves that challenge the heart and work the hips, legs and arm muscles. Zumba Gold uses the popular Latin dance-inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for people age 60 and above, beginners or others needing modifications to their exercise routine. This is fun class. Sneakers are required. **Cost is $40 for the eight-week program. Register by May 31. June 3 – “Crazy Daisy: Founder of the Girl Scouts” by Carol Simon Levine, storyteller, 10:30 a.m. Carol Simon Levine will bring the story of the Founder of the Girl Scouts to life. Juliette Gordon Low was impulsive, nearly deaf, eccentric and a fun-loving transatlantic socialite who founded an inclusive movement that has empowered tens of millions of American girls. **Made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission.** June 4 – Breakfast & Technology Workshops with Ridge High School students, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Local students have offered their technical expertise to help participants with their smartphones, tablets and computers. Bring your devices and specific questions for one-on-one assistance. A light breakfast will be served. **Reserve by May 29.** June 6 – “The Greatest Generation’s Contributions” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 a.m. Helen leads this discussion about our country’s “greatest generation” and all of the wonderful contributions that they have made. June 7 – Annual Senior’s Day at the Bernardsville Library, 10:30 a.m. Presenting a tribute to America’s sweethearts, the Andrew Sisters. County transportation will pick up registered participants at their home, bring them to the library, and then to the Senior Wellness Center for lunch. **Reserve by June 4.** June 10 – Total Brain Workout with Kristen, 10:30 a.m. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new, mind-stretching exercises could stimulate the brain and enhance critical thinking processes? Join us for some mind-tingling brain stumpers and a fun-filled intellectual workout. June 11 – “Millstone Valley through Time” by Linda Barth, author and presenter, 10:30 a.m. Linda will bring participants through the Millstone Valley National Scenic Byway via their mind’s eye for a trip into the history of central New Jersey. The villages of East Millstone, Millstone, Blackwells Mills, Griggstown, Rocky Hill and Kingston, which will give participants a glimpse into life in the valley as it was and is today. Vince and Diana will adjust the teaching to the skill-level of all participants; whether the class has beginners, or experienced dancers. If you have a partner or are single – this class is for everyone! June 14 & 24 – Bingo, 10:30 a.m. Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and improving listening and short-term memory skills. June 17 – Healthy Snack Food Tasting: Hummus Varieties, 10:30 a.m. Did you know there are over 15 varieties of hummus? Participants will try a few variations of this delicious bean-based, creamy spread. **Reserve by June 12.** June 18 – “All American Country Music Show” by D.W. Wilson, 10:30 a.m. Let’s get country. Sing along to your favorite country music songs! June 19 – Create Your Own Greeting Card Workshop with Jerry, 10:30 a.m. Use your creative touch to make a unique greeting card for your friends or loved ones. **All supplies are included. Reserve by June 14.** June 21 – “Dino: The King of Cool” by Gordon James, jazz musician, 10:30 a.m. This program discusses the life of Dean Martin including his solo career as an actor in movies, and television, his “Rat Pack” days and his part in the comedy duo of “Martin and Lewis” with Jerry Lewis. Gordon will sing Dean Martin classics like “Sway,” “That’s Amore,” “Return to Me,” “Volare,” Mambo Italiano,” “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” and “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You.” June 25 – “Seasonal Berries” by Allie Sanderson, RD, ShopRite/Wakefern, 10:30 a.m. Allie will give participants tasty recipes for in-season berries. **Reserve by June 21.** June 28 – “Exploring the Solar System” by Paul Cirillo. See breathtaking pictures of planets, asteroids, and comets in the Solar System. Learn about how NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory have had space missions or plan to have space missions that will explore these celestial wonders.
