Marie-Luise Pöhler Berlin, April 2017 III Abstract Everyone in the world, from the streets of Paris to the villages in Africa, knows the logo with the white letters that are written on a bright red background. Coca-Cola was intro- duced in 1886. In that year, only nine glasses of the soda drink were sold per day. So how did the little company from Atlanta become the world’s most valuable and popular soft drink? One of the company’s secrets is its emotional and memorable advertising strategies. Therefore, this thesis explains and analyzes how Coca-Cola uses activating processes in its brand communication to achieve customer loyalty.

  • An Exploratory Research Study with Reference to Individualism And
1 A cross-cultural, qualitative research study: comparison of The Coca- Cola Company television advertisements in China and South Africa Research Supervisor Mr H.F. Conradie Research Navigator Dr Franci Cronje Student Minke Egling Vega School of Brand Leadership, Cape Town 24 October 2016 1 2 I, Minke Egling, hereby declare that: The content of this research project represents my own work; All sources used or referred to have been documented and referenced; and This research project has not been previously submitted for assessment in full, or partial fulfillment of the requirements for an equivalent or higher qualification at any other recognized educational institution. The opinions expressed and conclusions drawn are those of the researcher and not necessarily of Vega School of Brand Leadership. Signed: _______________ Full Name: Minke Egling Date: 21/10//2016 2 3 ABSTRACT The objective of this research project was to investigate how The Coca-Cola Company advertisements are adapted according to cultural variability in South Africa and China. Five television advertisements, acting as social artifacts were analysed, advertising the products Coca- Cola, Sprite and Fanta. Three analysis models were applied to these advertisements. Firstly, the culture and context framework of Norlyk was employed to analyse how culture influences the form and content of the advertisements. Secondly, to analyse the extent of advertising standardisation, Harris and Attour’s model of analysis was employed. The scoring results based on Harris and Attour’s model of analysis placed the advertisements on the continuum, depending on the extent of advertising standardisation or adaptation of the advertisement. Finally, Hofstede’s model of analysis was employed to account for the possible cultural differences between South Africa and China in terms of collectivism and individualism on a national level.

  • In Coca-Cola Commercials 1 Affective Hist
PhiN-Beiheft 13/2017: 286 Julia Brühne (Mainz) Taste Global Capitalism: Affect, Multitude and 'Diet Jouissance' in Coca-Cola Commercials Taste the feeling, Open Happiness, Enjoy: almost everybody knows the slogans and commercials the Coca-Cola company has created and launched over the last decades. But what is the political dimension of these advertising campaigns? This article explores the dialectics of affect and jouis- sance in several TV campaigns from the seventies to the present. It shows that the categories of affect and multitude as described by Hardt/Negri, Deleuze/Guattari and Beasley-Murray do not have any liberating quality here. Coca-Cola's advertising strategy is the embodiment of the ideal of a peaceful multitudinous revolution lead by the constituent power of positively affected bodies. By creating the utopian vision of a happy revolution untainted by borders, class or race, Coca-Cola helps to deprogram, in the Jamesian sense, the concept of the sovereign nation state in favor of unlimited global capitalism. While this borderless 'government' may produce happy consumers, it simultaneously requires the renunciation of a political consciousness. The community that Coca- Cola's commercials aim to create is thus a community based on affective power – enjoyment, shame, alleviation – that excludes the ones 'who wouldn't feel the same' and that is unable to think of revo- lutionary action beyond consumerism. 1 Affective history: Coca-Cola with Deleuze and Ricœur In the 1980s, a Coca-Cola executive is reported to have said "Coca-Cola is more durable, less vulnerable, more self-correcting than the Roman Empire. This product is destined to outlast the USA" (cited by Wilson 2006: 564).
