The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in May, September and January. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272), Olivia Steven (348909)

We receive fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries daily, our prices are very competitive, so why not give us a try? We stock in-season fruit and vegetables, and can order large quantities if needed. We can supply speciality breads such as cottage loaves, French sticks and large wholemeal cobbers from Evershot Bakeries – ideal for entertaining. Balls the Butchers are happy to cut meat to individual customers’ requirements. We have a new supplier of fresh chicken, reared at Piddlehinton from ‘Piddle Valley Chicken’. The birds are given time to grow slowly on a natural diet with corn, grass and clover which gives their traditional chicken flavour and succulent meat. Living in large grassy paddocks and in small flocks these are the happiest chicken in Dorset! I support this very ethical new business and wish them well. I thank you all for your continued support of the shop and I am sure this will help it to go from strength to strength.

Window Cleaning Services

Commercial and residential window cleaning - We clean up to 80 ft from the ground using the latest water fed pole system which use purified water. Internal windows can also be cleaned using the traditional methods too.

We clean all year round in all weathers except high winds for safety reasons and operate on a 4, 8, or 12 weekly cycle, with cleaning all year round we can maintain a regular, high quality service for our clients.

Gutter Emptying Services

Gutters Blocked?

Why not get in touch for a free no obligation quote to have your gutters cleared and facias and soffits cleaned. We operate from the ground using CCTV to ensure the gutters have been emptied completely, we can clean to a height of 50ft.

Gutters need to be cleared of debris in order for water to be carried away from the house so it does not cause damage to your property by potentially back filling and flowing back into the property causing damp. In order to keep them working as they should we usually book these in once or twice a year depending on the surroundings i.e. trees, hedges etc.

If you would like to book any of the above services then please contact JAMIE on

MAR APR 16.indd 26 25/02/2016 09:45 Letters to the editor~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A big thank you must go to John Cox for getting up in the middle of the night to see the culvert was clear from the rising river so we could go to bed with peace of mind. Thank You, Derek and Eileen Cuff **** Dorset Community Action are running their “Best Village” competition again this year, which now includes categories such as Environment, “Best Village Shop”, People’s Project and Neighbourliness. Further details will be put on our www.piddlevalley.info website as soon as they are available, but you can read more about the competition now at the DCA website at http://www.dorsetcommunityaction.org.uk/#!dbv/c1xcz. The closing date for entries is 11 April for the “Best Village” category.

**** On the 5 May 2016 the District Council will be holding a Referendum to ask registered electors how they would like the District Council to be run. The poll will be combined with the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset and, in the Loders area, a Neighbourhood Planning Referendum. For the Referendum on the Way that District Council is run:- On the ballot papers, the choices are either: • by a leader who is an elected Councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors (how the council is run now), or • by one, or more, committees made up of elected councillors (a change from how it is run now). As part of making sure electors get an informed choice on what a new system would look like we have available a copy of the outline of a different system (if it were to change) and this is available on our website for inspection, as well as the current way the council operates (the current Constitution). To vote in the polls on the 5 May electors will need to be included on the electoral register by Monday 18 April 2016. Register to vote at https://www.gov.uk/register- to-vote. Applications to vote by post must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 19 April and applications to vote by proxy must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 26 April. The address to submit applications is to the Electoral Registration Officer, South Walks House, South Walks Road, Dorchester DT1 1UZ or by email to elections@westdorset- weymouth.gov.uk

MAR APR 16.indd 28 25/02/2016 09:45 Walter George Sims 1931 – 2015

Walter was born at Bookham, Buckland Newton 22nd May 1931. He was the youngest of five children born to Frank and Lavinia Maud Sims. The family moved to Piddlehinton, where Walter spent most of his childhood attending school there and making long term friends. Walter married in 1952 and lived with his wife and parents at Bank Cottages on the same site where the new “Banks Cottages” now stand. He worked for Cyril Green at Swan Lane. Walter worked on a variety of farms in Dorset, he moved around the country but was always drawn back to Piddlehinton, his roots, he never forgot his friends and was a regular at the village fete where he would catch up with some of those friends, some of whom he went to school with. Walter was diagnosed with dementia, and when his health declined it was agreed that he would benefit from living closer to his family. In October 2014 he went to live in residential care at Taunton, Somerset. Although suffering with dementia he would often talk of Piddlehinton, friends and childhood antics and could tell a tale or two, always conscious of his humble beginnings. In the summer of 2015 Walter welcomed two great-great-grandsons making him the head of five generations. Walter passed away on 13th December 2015 in Musgrove Hospital, Taunton. His burial took place at St. Mary the Virgin Piddlehinton on 22nd December. He is now at peace resting in the same churchyard as his parents and sister Ivy. He lays next to a friend and with others that he knew and grew up with. Donations made in memory of Walter amounted to £220 and will be divided between St. Mary the Virgin Church and the British Heart Foundation. It is a great comfort to the family knowing Walter is back home where he wanted to be, and they would like to thank all those who attended the funeral and extend their thanks to Alan Neades, Fay Lord, John Hudson, Thimble Inn, and Tony Monds for his advice. Kathleen Darby (Daughter)

MAR APR 16.indd 34 25/02/2016 09:45 Support And Information For Older People

If you are over 50 there is a free resource you can call on to help you find out what you need to know about services and activities that are important to you in your community. It is called POPP (Partnership for Older People Programme). POPP is funded by DCC and NHS Dorset to improve the quality of life for older people by ensuring that opportunities are put in place locally to promote health and wellbeing, independence , preventative services and activities . Locally there are two people you can contact: Ellis Ford – who is what is termed a POPP Wayfinder and Julian English – a POPP Champion.

Ellis will provide one-to-one support and signposting and can visit people in their own homes. He has a wealth of information and relevant contacts at his fingertips and if he doesn’t know the answer to any question immediately he will find out.

Julian challenges the way that the statutory bodies deliver services to older people, so if you have any concerns you should raise them with him .Julian will also support groups to fund new activities and initiatives that help older people remain active, healthy and involved with their local community. In Cerne POPP has seed funded the Giant Social and the Community Defibrillator .

Alton Pancras

AP The big event in the Alton Pancras calendar, the village fete, will again be held in the glorious gardens of Barcombe Grange, thanks to the kindness of Iain and Janet Barlow. The magic date for your diary is Saturday 28th May, 1.00 pm.to 4.00 pm.

AP Sue Dean can supply glass jars if people could kindly fill them for sale at our village Fete on 28th May. Not just jam or marmalade, but sweets, cakes, biscuits, bath salts – not all in the same jar of course.

AP Complimenting dog-owner Ed Willis of Box Cottage on providing a box in his porch for mail (and PVN&V), to prevent his dog from attacking the letterbox from within, he said that he did that after finding that his dog had chewed up his income tax return and he was punished by the government for not completing it in time!

AP We have previously thanked Ray Goddard for keeping the pond bank neatly trimmed so it will be no surprise to learn that the first display of a line of snowdrops was his latest creation.

AP A box of secondhand books for sale will again appear in the church from Easter onwards but some new titles are sought. The original idea had been for village readers to drop in occasionally while passing to see what’s new. Donations of suitable material to Sue Dean please (348524, e-mail below).

AP An article in Dorset Magazine, December 2015 (p84) mentioned that comedian Ricky Gervais’ grandfather Tom George House was born 1851 Piddletrenthide and his 3 x great grandmother was Susannah Squibb. We know that in 1924 a Miss Florence Grace House was running AP post office, and the name Squibb seems familiar in AP too!

AP We mentioned the AP Magazine Exchange in our last issue. We are grateful for regular contributions of magazines for circulation from Heather Bland, Jan Burnett, Susan and Sarah Cheyne. We could handle a few more titles; a form of recycling?

AP The main concern about the proposed conversion of New Barn to a house, seemingly miles up Ripps Lane towards the Old Sherborne Road, (since withdrawn) was … who was going to make the long trek up there to deliver News & Views? A quad bike would have had to be provided.

Piddlehinton carol singers We managed to dodge the showers and set out on a mild evening around the village singing carols and raising money for Dorchester’s Foodbank. The young raced from door to door whilst the rest of us tried to keep up finally ending up at the Thimble. We were sustained by kind village folk as we sang and raised a wonderful £185. Thank you to all singers, givers and supporters.

Blood Donation in Winter

Blood stocks always tend to run low in winter because even regular donors are prevented from attending sessions by winter illnesses and bad weather, so now is an especially good time to decide to become a donor.

You can make an initial check to find out whether your health allows you to donate blood by calling 0300 123 23 23 or on the Blood Transfusion website (www.blood. co.uk). The website also explains what to expect at a donation session and how blood is used. You can book an appointment as well, which minimises your waiting time at the session.

DORCHESTER sessions will be held at the United Church Hall, South Street (near Goulds household store) on the following Thursdays:

10, 24 March, 7, 28 April

Sherborne, at the Digby Memorial Hall – Mon 18th April

These sessions are all open at the same hours, 12.45–15.30 and 16.30–19.30 pm.

MAR APR 16.indd 44 25/02/2016 09:45 Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance – Coast to Coast Cycle Ride Annual Appeal for Cakes and Bananas.

The time has come again when we are asking please for donations of cakes, healthy snack bars, biscuits and also bunches of bananas to “fuel up” and support the 600 cyclists who will be doing a 54 mile sponsored cycle ride from Watchet in Somerset to West Bay in Dorset on Sunday 15 May to raise vital funds to keep your Air Ambulance flying.

Air Ambulance volunteers run “pit stops” for these cyclists offering refreshments to refuel their efforts. We will be at Ilminster Ambulance Station as stewards for this very popular event.

It takes £2 million per annum (£2500 per mission) to keep this vital Air Ambulance service operational and we are reliant on donations and fund raising efforts (no funding from Government or Lottery).

If you are able to help by donating cakes, bars, biscuits or bananas, please could you bring them to Piddlehinton Village Hall between 10:00 – 12:00 on Saturday 14 May. Alternatively, if this time is not convenient they can be delivered to our home, 22 Paynes Close, Piddlehinton on the Friday 13 or Saturday 14 afternoon/ evening.

UPDATE: £64,400 has been raised so far from the 2015 Cycle Ride.

Thank you all so much for your continued support.

Dorset Trading Standards

Tell us about Illegal Tobacco. Anyone selling illegal tobacco commits a criminal offence. The seller can face up to 10 years in prison and an unlimited fine. Why does it carry such a heavy penalty? Sold at pocket money prices, cheap tobacco makes it all too easy for our children to start smoking. The sale helps fund organised crime and those selling illegal tobacco may also be selling other illegal goods and introducing more crime into your local community.

www.piddlevalley.info 45

MAR APR 16.indd 45 25/02/2016 09:45 So what is the law on this? It is not illegal for you to go abroad and buy cheap cigarettes for your own use but bringing them back and selling them is. If tobacco doesn’t come through legal supply chains it could very easily be a counterfeit product. The manufacture of counterfeit tobacco isn’t regulated so you can’t tell where it comes from or what it is made out of. Where counterfeit tobacco has been tested and has failed those safety tests it has been found to contain asbestos, animal faeces and glass. Since 2011 cigarettes must also be able to self extinguish themselves too, but illegal tobacco is more likely to cause fatal blazes as they may not self extinguish.

How to spot illegal tobacco: - Often tastes different; - Can be sold in boxes with poor print quality and have spelling mistakes; - Might be sold in packets without required safety warnings; - Sold in packaging with a handmade look and feel.

Trading standards are committed to disrupting the sale of illegal tobacco and you can help us. If you think you have information about someone selling illegal tobacco, or know a place where it is sold, then please help us. Any information no matter how small may be the piece we need. You can tell us anonymously on-line at www.stop- illegal-tobacco.co.uk or by phoning the illegal tobacco hotline number on 0300 999 0000.

Pension Scams Last April, the Government introduced new pension rules enabling greater access to and freedom around, how people spend their pensions. However, there is growing concern that the new rules will increase the risk of investment and other types of fraud. Indeed, it has already been reported that one in seven over 55s have been targeted by pension fraudsters, and it’s been estimated that the amount of money lost to pension scammers between April and August 2015 was just over £9 million, which is around twice as much as the same period in 2014. The most common way used by potential scammers to contact over-55s is by email, followed by phone and then by post.

Be very wary if you get:

A cold call offer of a free pension review; A cold call offer of a one off investment opportunity (for example, in land development, fi ne wines, precious stones, etc);

MAR APR 16.indd 46 25/02/2016 09:45 Hurrah for Home-Start!

Family support scheme Home-Start West Dorset is celebrating, with 17 new home-visiting volunteers trained and ready to offer their allocated families a helping hand, a listening ear, and the caring friendship that can make all the difference when things get tough.

As Senior Organiser Helen Horsley explains, Home-Start supports families with at least one under-fi ve who face a variety of challenges; two or three hours a week of volunteer home-visiting can help them make changes, and give them some valuable quality time.

Home-Start always needs more volunteers, so if you’re a parent with time to give, why not apply? Volunteers join up for many reasons: young mother-of-three Emily from West Dorset says she feels blessed, and wants to share her good fortune with others; Alice, now enjoying retirement in Dorchester, says she loves children, homemaking and a chat, and hopes to put her life’s experience to good use; Anna, who travelled the world and worked in a Romanian orphanage before settling in Sherborne, says she’s keen to make a difference closer to home.

Home-Start also welcomes general help – Weymouth-based ‘behind the scenes’ volunteer Kit says “It’s only too easy when there’s so much doom and gloom in the media to feel powerless. But making the decision to volunteer is a really positive step; and becoming part of a caring and well-run organisation like Home-Start West Dorset makes you feel good too… I can recommend it!”

MAR APR 16.indd 47 25/02/2016 09:45 An offer of an investment described as ‘unique’, ‘overseas’, ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘ethical’ or in a ‘new’ industry ; An offer of exploiting a legal loop hole; A proposal to put all your funds into one investment; A convincing marketing offer that promises returns of over 8%; An offer involving transferring your money quickly, and sending documents to you by courier.

Do not rush into apparently attractive financial offers and make sure you seek advice and guidance before agreeing to anything. Dorset Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme has a list of approved financial advisors. Impartial guidance is available through the Government’s Pension Wise guidance service. Visit www. pensionwise.gov.uk or phone The Pensions Advisory Service on 0300 123 1047. Finally, beware of copycat websites – some websites can look like they’re official government services like Pension Wise when they’re not.

National Gardens Scheme at Ivy House Garden

The time is fast approaching when once again we throw open our garden gates to eager visitors keen to slough off the cold cloak of Winter. But of course, this Winter has been less than the usual with an absence of the stiff frosts crisping the grass, delaying the start of the gardening day. Instead we’ve slithered and slid down our steep slopes and even our abnormally free-draining soil has proved a sticky challenge!

MAR APR 16.indd 49 25/02/2016 09:45 So how do we judge when Spring has sprung? Whilst our daffodils are no further advanced than usual, many other flowers are unexpectedly bursting forth, including perennial geraniums, clearly mistaking the double-figured temperatures for early May.

On yesterday’s early morning ascent with the dogs, I counted in excess of 25 flowers bedecking trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs.

But perhaps the surest sign of Spring’s advance lies at the entrance to the beehives., where industrious bees alight, rear legs heavy with pollen: a true sign that their Queen is in full lay and new life emerging within.

We welcome you to our garden on Monday 28th March, Sunday 17th April, Wednesday 20th April, Sunday/Monday 1st/2nd May all from 2–5pm.

Piddle Valley Over 60s

Our next meeting, which will be on March 3rd in The Memorial Hall Piddletrenthide, will be “Call My Bluff” which will be great fun and all are welcome. The team who do this do it to raise funds for Weldmar so there will be a collection at the end.

On 7th April there will be a talk by David Downton on “Dorset Language”.

Piddle Valley Players – CAROUSEL

A show reviewer usually reports on just one performance; not all nights might be the same. This correspondent covered the Thursday show and can only write as he finds. The briefest he can report is; SENSATIONAL! The opening scene involved all the cast wandering round the coastal fairground, smiling, joking, greeting each other, relaxed as we would be in happy mood – and without a single scripted word! That set the atmosphere for the whole evening, us older ones instantly recognising the famous songs such as When the Children are Asleep, If I Loved You and many more, all delivered without too much attempted American accents, accompanied by three musicians with the lightest of touches.

MAR APR 16.indd 51 25/02/2016 09:45 The show was sponsored by Dorset Cereals and the Piddle Inn. It would be invidious to name individuals, but performers and audience recognised show director Rachel Olley’s massive input at all levels, particularly in teasing out good performances. By the time you read this she will be well into planning the next show! As always, the Memorial Hall dressed up and adapted well, its committee and supporters forming most of the front-of-house team, so it was a happy audience who set off in search of their cars afterwards, cleaning off the frosty windscreens, perhaps with the hope that June would soon be Bustin’ Out All Over in the Piddle Valley.

MAR APR 16.indd 56 25/02/2016 09:45 Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

REGIMENTAL HUMOUR

The months of March and April 1916 did not see any loss of men from our Valley, so we’ll look at some of the more light hearted incidents which are recorded in “The History of the Dorsetshire Regiment – 1914–1919”. It’s very likely that some of our local soldiers knew of these incidents.

As may be expected, the early days of the War were a rich source of entertainment with enthusiastic troops who had not yet grasped correct military ways, especially on sentry duty. A sentry’s correct challenge is “Advance and be recognised”, but one Commanding Offi cer swore that he was challenged to “Advance and be baptised”.

Another zealous sentry in the 3rd Battalion near Weymouth heard someone approach his post one dark night. With his rifl e loaded with ball and and his mind loaded with Germans, he ordered the intruder to halt. There was no reply. The sentry took careful aim, fi red and killed the offender – a cow!

In 1914, imaginary spies lurked everywhere. The 4th Dorsets, stationed near Plymouth, were advised about a wireless installation in a private house which the Intelligence Department considered should be investigated. At the dead of night a subaltern’s party raided the house and the young ladies living there were politely requested to wait in the living room while their rooms were searched for spies or other incriminating evidence. They were in their night attire. One cannot help feeling that the subalterns may have engineered this incident. Could the young ladies be the reason for the raid?

Overseas, and facing the stern test of battle, the humour still kept up. On the Somme in October 1916 the 6th Battalion recorded that one man, stuck in the mud, was handed over to a relieving battalion as trench stores.

One of the 6th Battalion’s offi cers is described as having a most delightful and unregulated sense of humour. He maintained that people had tea between the lines and even brought back some crockery from a patrol as proof. Once he was ordered to take a patrol to inspect the enemy’s wire and report on gaps in the entanglements. When he sent in his report he included two envelopes. One, containing a minute bit of wire, was marked “herewith sample of wire”. The other, “herewith sample of gap”. It was empty.

www.piddlevalley.info 57

MAR APR 16.indd 57 25/02/2016 09:45 The 5th Battalion went to Gallipoli in 1915, landing at Suvla Bay on the night of the 6/7th August. The boat conveying the Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Hannay, grounded about 60 yards from the shore and a sailor invited the C.O. to step overboard and wade. The C.O. told the man to try for himself. He did so and promptly disappeared under the water, much to the amusement of the soldiers. Humour aside, Hannay was being sensible. Soldiers had drowned in the first Gallipoli landings on the 25th April 1915 when they jumped, heavily laden with equipment, into deep water.

Lice were a constant problem on all battlefronts, and delousing baths were known as the Lyceum. Visits to these baths were often accompanied by a parody of the Aladdin cry “New lice for old”!

My favourite tale comes from the 1/4th Battalion who were in Mespotamia in June 1916. A Sergeant of the guard had run out of cigarettes and was longing for a smoke. He could not leave his post, so called upon a passing Private to purchase a packet from the YMCA. The cost was 4 annas. “Be sharp” he said, “here’s 8 annas. You can have a packet yourself”. The Private disappeared but did not return that day. Next morning he presented himself at the guard tent. “Seargeant, here’s your 4 annas change. They only had one packet and I smoked he!”

News from Puddletown Surgery Once again I am writing to keep you up to date with events at Puddletown Surgery and impart important health messages. If there are any other matters you would like us to ad- dress, please let us know by ringing to speak to Carol Taylor, Practice Manager, on 01305 848333 or e-mailing [email protected].

Opening Hours for Easter Over the Easter period the surgery will be closed on Good Friday, 25th March, and Easter Monday, 28th March. Please note that the surgery WILL BE OPEN on Easter Saturday, 26th March

If you are unwell while the surgery is closed, ring NHS 111. They will take details of your condition and direct you straight away to the local service that can help you best.

Please note that prescriptions requested on Thursday 24th March will be ready for collection from the afternoon of Wednesday 30th March.

Goodbye from Dr Anne Boyle At the end of March I will be hanging up my stethoscope and retiring to the Sydling Valley, to spend more time on the farm, with Paul, and our dogs, horses and sheep. I am really looking forward to this, but I know I will miss a lot of things about Puddletown: The continual fascination of General Practice, my excellent partners and superb team at the surgery and, of course, all the people I have got to know, over so many years, as patients. Thank you all for putting up with me! It has been a pleasure and a privilege to practise in such a lovely place.

It is good to know I’m leaving the practice in safe hands and that my patients will be very well cared for.

I believe a few people have asked if I will be having a leaving present. Thank you, but no. Instead I would like to put any donations into a collection to give to the Motor Neurone Disease Association (cash or cheques made payable to “Puddletown Surgery”). I lost a good friend to this disease; the charity does sterling work and needs support.

And welcome to Dr Julia Griffiths Dr Jonathan Bond will take Dr Boyle’s place as partner to Dr Chris Burnham. From 1st April he will be here on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We are additionally very fortunate to have secured the appointment of Dr Julia Griffiths to join the team. Dr Griffiths will be providing surgeries on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

MAR APR 16.indd 63 25/02/2016 09:45 BEAUTY & POWER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Magdalena Atkinson – age 39, a resident of Piddlehinton, a mother of Alexander, Isabella and Oliver, a singer-songwriter, a teacher of Shakti Dance – yoga of dance, a music teacher, a dreamer…

“I follow my path with ease and grace… I follow my path, my wildest adventure, I follow my path & my true nature…”

Dear Readers,

Many of you may know me over the last 12 years since I moved to the Piddle Valley. I would like to share with you, my journey of inspiration and self-discovery which led me to become an artist and to publish my album “Beauty & Power” officially released in February 2016.

My musical journey started at home, nurtured with music and songs written by my mother. I was trained as a singer, a musicologist and a music teacher. I started to write my own music at University with a group of friends, forming the group “Elipsa” in 1998. My deepest dream was to perform, to write music and to travel… We were sharing the music at festivals and concerts, recording and rehearsing… It felt like my best creative years in my life.

In 2000 I had an opportunity to travel as I was accepted at the Academy of Music and Dance in Bali, Indonesia, where I received a year scholarship. My life started to unfold naturally, nourished with love and security created by my husband Tom, whom I met in Greece in 2002. We moved to the UK, we got married, we had children and a busy life, beautiful but tough at times… With all those changes I stopped writing or playing music. The piano was not touched for years; my voice was constantly not well, catching every single cold…

My deep dream of being a singer was pushed away very far, indeed. Then I hit a slight depression. To save myself I started the healing process which revealed my dormant dreams, felt like an unreachable fairy tale…

“How can I sing again”- I asked – “I am ill, I lost my inspiration, I am not good enough” - the little voice was crying…

64 www.piddlevalley.info

MAR APR 16.indd 64 25/02/2016 09:45 I needed to listen to that inner calling of creativity to heal myself and soon after I started to sing again. With the support of Jo Thornton from the Twinning Association, we created, together with David Bowen and his friend Mike Botterill, a short program of French Chansons performed in Piddletrenhide in 2011, followed by more performances across Dorset.

Not long later, I started to write new songs, inspired by my healing process. I signed up for the training in SHAKTI DANCE – the yoga of dance, which hugely helped me to unlock my creativity even further. The yogic term SHAKTI means the creative power and since 2014, I share this beautiful practice during the regular monthly workshops in Dorchester and .

When Oliver, my youngest boy went to school, I used it as an opportunity to follow my dreams…to record an album of my music, after 10 years of silence...

Now I feel like a new chapter in my life is being open. I am receiving first invitations to festivals, events and concerts. I have opened the door to my dreams allowing them to unfold in the most beautiful way. Which ways? – I don’t know, but the process taught me to trust and to surrender.

WAND (Woman Action Network Dorset) invited me to share my music during the concert celebrating the Woman’s Week on the 10th of March at 7.30pm in Dorchester Town Hall. (Tickets £8/£6 at the door). It would be wonderful to see some friends from the Piddle Valley there!

New opportunities are coming my way every week… I am so very grateful… for my rediscovered gifts, for the support of my husband, my family, and friends, for the life full of potentials…

“I’m on my way to the new adventure I follow my dreams and make them true The golden Sun shines up upon me Showing the way where I am called from…”

MAR APR 16.indd 65 25/02/2016 09:45 ABOUT BEAUTY & POWER

“We are the powerful beings who are walking on this Earth, we are beautiful…” – the words echo through Magdalena’s songs in a subtle and uplifting manner. Simple, yet beautiful melodies with Magdalena’s angelic and vibrant voice, invite the body to gently sway, the heart to open and the soul to listen. The sound of the hammered dulcimer, performed by Magdalena, the hang drum, skillfully played by talented drummer Ralph Cree and the ethereal keyboards added by the producer Steve Jones – give this recording its subtle, folky tone. The song orders is inspired by the practice of Shakti Dance – the yoga of dance – which Magdalena shares as a teacher. It starts with an invocation to the archetypes of Power and Beauty, then gently warms up the body and soul, finds its momentum and the rhythm, and slowly winds down with a soulful meditation.”

The album CD and free videos are available from my website www.magdalenaatkinson.co.uk and across major music distribution shops, like iTunes, Amazon, Spotify.

MAR APR 16.indd 67 25/02/2016 09:45 HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY - DORSET READING PARTNERS

Dorset Reading Partners is a charity that recruits and trains volunteers who work in local primary schools helping children with their reading development. Our reading partners offer regular, sustained, one-to-one Dorset Reading Partners support to children who are reluctant to read or who need a little extra help The Little Keep Barrack Road and encouragement. They talk, share books and play games in half-hour Dorchester sessions outside the classroom, in order to increase children’s confi dence and DT1 1SQ motivation as well as their communication and literacy skills. Simple - Do you feel 01305 458515, [email protected] can be .a friend? Are you able to be patient and caring? You might be busy, but for as little as one evening per month, you can give so much to a person’s life. The people who use our services haveENDS learning disabilities and appreciate friendship.

In Dorchester, we have a number of people who would like to have volunteer befrienders help out with outings or activities. Once a month there is a need for people to help take people who use our services to a local friendship club for skittle, discos or karaoke. We also roles based in houses, for example we need a person to help a woman with crafts or cooking once a fortnight. We also need a keen swimmer to help out with visits to the local swimming pool.

Michael, a befriender for us says ‘I love being a friend to different service users. I was a little anxious to begin with as I had not any experience of spending time with a person with learning disabilities. Once you start talking or doing an activity and you see how much the person is enjoying your company, it becomes so rewarding and then the anxiety just goes! Sometimes all I do is listen to the person. Other times, I might do an activity or go out for a coffee. It really is worth trying.’

Training and support is given. Volunteers are highly valued in Leonard Cheshire Disability. Working with a person who has learning disabilities can be highly satisfying and can really make you feel you are doing something important and worthwhile. Do call and have a chat about how you can help.
