Love, death, religion, nature and nationalism became the great themes of the romantic period. The treatment of these themes by the precursors of romanticism was later interpreted and developed by the major romantic poets, Alphonse de Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset and Alfred de Vigny. -

Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

The Commune of 1871 was the predominantly working-class rebellion that seized control of Paris two months after France had lost a war against Prussia. The Communards controlled Paris from mid-March to late May before the French national army operating from nearby Versailles entered and retook the city in a week of terrible street fighting. According to John Merriman, La Semaine Sanglante (Bloody Week, 21-28 May 1871), was a “massacre” perpetrated by the national government that left as many as 12,000- 15,000 Communards killed.[1] Historians like Merriman have written a great deal about the Commune. As with other national traumas, there have also been contests over the memory and legacies of 1871. Colette E. Wilson’s persuasive Paris and the Commune 1871-78 (first published as a hardback edition in 2007) is about the effort by conservative elements in Paris and France to either forget aspects of the Commune’s history or to remember only what they regarded as its crimes. Paris and the Commune 1871-78 is a concise work of six chapters, including introduction and brief conclusion. The book is part of a series produced by Manchester University’s Centre for the Cultural History of War and belongs to the scholarly genre of cultural memory studies. -

WATER AND WINE AS SYMBOLS OF INSPIRATION BY N. B. CROWTHER It has long been suggested that drinking from holy streams (or founts) in Greek and Roman poetry symbolized different approaches to poetic endeavour: Maass 1), followed by Wilamowitz 2) and Kroll 3), for example, believed that epic poets drank from Hippo- crene, elegiac poets from Aganippe. Yet the evidence for assigning specific functions to these streams will be seen to be rarely clear-cut, if at all. The related problem of the "debate" between the water- drinkers and wine-drinkers seems equally complex. Can we see the drinking from streams in Roman poetry as symbolic for the initia- tion of the poet, or acceptance by him, of Alexandrian, i.e. Calli- machean poetry? It is certainly a feature which permeates the writing of many of the major Roman poets, and therefore is of considerable importance in the literary development of these authors. The first Greek author to speak of holy streams is Hesiod, who names Hippocrene, Permessus and Olmeus on Helicon as bathing- places of the Muses (Theogony I ff.) 4) ; he seems also to mention a 1) E. Robert Lamberton- September 21st, 1991 Hesiod and the Thespian Festival of the Muses The Hesiodic tradition (from pre-5th century until just recently) has maintained that Hesiod - a mere rustic bard - had met and been tutored by the Muses near Ascra and Mount Helicon in Boeotia; inspired by them, he wrote the Theogony and Works and Days. Whether the Muses were taken literally or metaphorically, Hesiod himself, in contrast to the nameless and faceless author of the Iliad and Odyssey, was still taken as literal and the autobiographical elements in the poems as true: his feud with his brother, the homeland and resettlement of his father, etc. Local inhabitants of the town of Pyrgake pointed out to travelers the home of Hesiod, with Helicon in the background. But in the last two generations, especially as the nature of oral poetry has become clearer, a historical Hesiod has become less accepted. We will look mainly at the account given by Plutarch, himself also a Boeotian, who was born during the reign of Claudius and died during the reign of Hadrian and who wrote a commentary on Hesiod's Works and Days. There is almost no evidence of the existence of Theogony or Works and Days prior to the Hellenistic age. Musaeus and Orpheus are clearly legendary characters, but Hesiod gives so much detail about himself in the works that it has been hard to see him as merely a literary construct. Plutarch, who may have written a life of Hesiod, believed Hesiod was a historical figure, but evidence he gives casts doubt on the integrity of some of the details of Hesiod's autobiography. -

Like many a t ~: youth, he had ambivalent feelings about the ideas and sentiments of ~,j. his elders. On the one hand, his autobiographical novel, The Confes f: {' sions of a Child of the Century, is a major model of Romantic con t fessional prose; on the other hand, he became identified among his ~~; , i" ~. peers as a major proponent of the revival of neoclassical tragedy in ~, the theater, as well as a sarcastic, even virulent, lampooner of Ro I.': ~j mantic stylistic excesses, in his widely read and amusing Letters of ~L ' Dupuis and Cotonet, in which he gave a well-known definition of F)'" Romanticism as "the overuse of adjectives." Musset's primary renown in modern times has been as a drama " :1 ,~ tist. But the "Romantic" Musset has remained perhaps the l" only "classic" dramatist of his time.
