Although many days pass without the kind of treats I’d gone to sleep dreaming of, every so often I wake up to something surprising. Pleasingly, it isn’t always from the brands I’d expect. With the release of the Big Zero Malevich watch, Raketa fuses a few of my earliest memories from my career, resulting in something strangely alluring. Hands-On With The Sternglas Kanton Raketa is an interesting brand. It is unabashedly Russian. For those with an interest in its (very) long history (stretching all the way back to the time of Peter the Great), this is a positive thing. The Sternglas ups their game with a Swiss movement brand’s history is loaded with odd models that look positively alien to most of us that grew up in and around the more conservative Swiss and German watchmaking industries. Some of Raketa’s past creations are wacky, some are wild, some of them are just plain weird. For fans of aesthetic diversity, we have a lot to thank this plucky Russian manufacture for. But what’s going on with the barely legible Raketa Big Zero Malevich watch? Is it brilliant or is it simply bonkers? Brutal honesty I don’t often lift lines from press releases verbatim, but this one made me laugh: “Most will hate it. Few will love it. Exactly how we want it.” If that isn’t brutal honesty for you, I don’t know what is. It isn’t even mildly diplomatic in the brand’s own favor. I think the first word of the first sentence was a stunning uppercut to its own face before the first word of the second sentence swung a haymaking hook to the temple. And yet, such self-deprecation set the stage for a stirring comeback. Rather, this was a work of art from the beginning. Inspired by (and named after) avant-garde artist Kazimir Malevich, the watch references his 1915 abstract masterpiece, the Black Square. As such, I was thrilled when Vantablack made its way into watchmaking. I’d like to see more of it, to be honest. The Raketa Big Zero Malevich watch is a nice, unusual, aesthetically digestible foray into this field. The strong suppositions continue… Raketa is really keen to hammer home the fact that most people will not like this watch. However, I’m not sure the brand is right on this front. I am sure that most people will not buy this watch, but I would be surprised if it met with an overwhelmingly negative reception. A 38.8mm stainless steel case (water-resistant to 100m) houses a dial made from three different materials. This watch uses black jade, white jade, and violan in the formation of its striking dial. If I were going to buy one of these fun flourishes I would head to the gallery itself and compare the finished product with the original painting, which still hangs on its walls. Raketa's affinity with the ocean has led it to create its latest timepiece, the Leopard 24. This is a distinct piece that's not only full of character but also carries with it a physical bit of its inspiration from the "Leopard" Akula-class submarine. The Akula-class submarine first entered into service with the Soviet Navy in 1984 and since then has become one of the world's most advanced marine vessels. Each Akula-class submarine has its own designated name, with the "Leopard K-328" being the vessel that donated its metal to Raketa for the Leopard 24 timepiece The Leopard 24 was developed with the help of Captain Valery Dyakonov who supervised the pre-launch stages of the Leopard, conducted its sea trials and was its first commander until 1996. The original metal from the "Leopard L-328" Akula-class submarine was used to make the bezel, but the Leopard 24 features many distinctive details of a true submariner's watch. Its hands replicate the design of the hands in the control panels in the submarine, the dial and hands are luminescent to allow the submariners to read the time in the dark and there are 6 lines (in red and grey colours) dividing the perimeter of the dial into 6 quarters (4 hours each), allowing each submariner to keep count of his shift times in the submarine.

PETERSBURG, Russia — Amid the roar of Soviet-era machinery, Sergei Andreev seemed lost in concentration as he sat at the helm of a clunky-looking contraption that produces pallet forks, among the tiny components in mechanical watch movements. Wearing blue coveralls and a solemn expression, he could have been a worker from a bygone industrial age. But this was modern-day Russia, where the 23-year-old Mr. Andreev is one of the 84 workers at the Raketa watch factory, a sprawling 16,145-square-foot two-level facility that dates from 1721 and today houses about 600 vintage machines. The factory has a rare status in the watchmaking world: It produces all but a few of the 242 parts in the brand’s in-house movement, the Raketa- Avtomat, including the pallet fork and the even tinier hairspring, which regulates the oscillation, or “heartbeat,” of a mechanical watch. (Only a few small components, including jewels and leather straps, are purchased from Russian suppliers.) Mr. Andreev’s pallet forks were destined for the 30 models that make up Raketa’s three collections of mechanical watches — Classic, Tool and Curiosity (avant-garde) — all priced from 800 to 2,000 euros ($940 to $2,350). This is a sub category of "Sea" and "In Love With The Sea", which is a sub-category of "Tool". Well, part of the "Freemium" coverage here at Tempus Fugit is to try and give you the information you really need, without making you leap through a payment fire wall, and without requiring a brand to pass 3 pieces of silver across my palm in exchange for coverage ; ) The other pieces making up the "Tool" collection are thoughtfully decorated, but perhaps a wee-bit too much so. This year the brand releases another “Avant-Garde” limited edition inspired by a communist propaganda lithograph made by El Lissitzky. Produced in the Raketa Watch Factory of Saint Petersburg, this is the third model in the “Avant-Garde” collection with colourful abstract shapes that move around the dial at di¡erent speeds. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Raketa is not a conventional brand by any stretch of the imagination. Starting with its colourful history (see box) and its Soviet-era factory where movements, including hairsprings, are produced in-house, Raketa is ¤ercely proud of its heritage and takes inspiration from all thing Russian.
