Graphic Narrative: Comics in Contemporary Art
An Elective Course for Undergraduate and Graduate Students of any discipline and for English Language Students GRAPHIC NARRATIVE IN CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE & ART: EVOLUTION OF COMIC BOOK TO GRAPHIC NOVEL Basic Requirements: Appropriate language skills required by the University. This course should be of interest to anyone concerned with verbal & visual communications, popular forms, mass culture, history and its representation, colonialism, politics, journalism, writing, philosophy, religion, mythology, mysticism, metaphysics, cultural exchanges, aesthetics, post-modernism, theatre, film, comic art, collections, popular art & culture, literature, fine arts, etc. This course may have a specific appeal to fans and/or to those who are curious about this vastly influential, widely popular, most complex and thought-provoking work of contemporary literature and art form, the ‘Comics’; however it does not presume a prior familiarity with graphic novels and/or comics, just an overall enthusiasm to learn new things from a new angle and an open mind. Prerequisites: FA489: ‘By consent’ selection of students. FA490: Upon successful completion of FA489. Co-requisites: FA489: Freshmen who graduated from a high school with an English curriculum or passed BU proficiency test with an A; & sophomore, junior, senior students. FA490: Successful completion of FA 489. No requisites: FA 49I, FA49J, FA49V. Recommended Preparation: Reading all of the required readings and as many from the suggested reading list. Idea Description: Is ‘comics’ a form of both literature and art? Certainly the answer is “yes” but there are many people who reject the idea, yet many other people call those people old-school intellectuals. However, in recent years, many scholars, critics and faculty alike have accepted ‘comics’, often dubbed by many publishers as ‘graphic novel’, as a respected form of both literature and art. -

Vol. XIV (2009) 61-71 KAWAGUCHi’s Zipang, AN ALTERNATE SECOND WORLD WAR Pascal Lefèvre Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussel / Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design Science-fiction is not necessarely about the future but it can deal with history as well. Since the publication of H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine (1895) time travel has become a popular feature of various SF-stories. Time travel has proven not only a fantastic device for imagining “what if” – stories, but also an intriguing means to revise past events from a contemporary perspective. A very interesting and recent example is Kaiji Kawaguchi’s ongoing manga series Zipangu (translated as Zipang in English and French), which has met since its start in 2001, in the popular Kodansha manga magazine Weekly Morning, both popular and critical success1 (Masanao, 2004: 184-187). By August 2008 some 400 episodes were collected in 36 volumes2 of the Japanese edition, and 21 volumes were translated into French3 – which will be the ones analysed in this article (the number of the volume will appear in Latin numbers, and the number of the episode in arabic numbers: followed by page number after a colon). While the English translation was suspended4, the French edition seems a lot more succesful, at least from a critical point of view – see Bastide (2006, 218-219) or Finet (2008: 272-273), and a nomination at the Angoulême comics festival in 2007). Zipang is not only a fairly skillfully manga for young males (“seinen”), but it adresses also a number of current political debates of Japan’s recent history and near future. -

PARCOURS EN BIBLIOTHÈQUE Des adonaissants aux jeunes adultes REIMS 12-15 juin 2008 Session 5 L’engouement des jeunes pour les Mangas Julien Bastide Critique et auteur de livres sur les Mangas Mangas : une nouvelle littérature populaire En moins de quinze ans, la bande dessinée japonaise a conquis de nombreux lecteurs francophones, remettant en cause la suprématie historique de la bande dessinée franco-belge. Elle se caractérise par une production pléthorique, fondée sur le principe du feuilleton et ciblée en fonction de l’âge et du sexe du lecteur, suscitant des récits qui jouent sur les attentes du public, entre identification et fantasme. Les débuts du Cri qui tue Lorsqu’en 1978, Motoichi « Athos » Takemoto, jeune Japonais installé en Suisse, publie le premier numéro de la revue Le Cri qui tue, il ne se doute pas qu’il est le précurseur d’un mouvement destiné à bouleverser le marché de la bande dessinée européenne. Si l’on excepte la publication de quelques histoires de Hiroshi Hirata dans la revue d’arts martiaux Budo, à partir de 1969, c’est en effet dans ce périodique que furent présentées pour la première fois, de manière volontariste, au public francophone des bandes dessinées japonaises traduites en français – mais faute de succès, la publication du Cri qui tue est interrompue en 1981, après six numéros. Il faut attendre le début de la décennie suivante pour que la bande dessinée japonaise connaisse ses premiers best-sellers en Europe francophone, sous l’impulsion notamment de l’éditeur français Jacques Glénat, fort de l’énorme succès de la série Dragon Ball d’Akira Toriyama, publiée en français à partir de 1991 (éd. -

En 1990, Glénat publiait en France les premières pages d’Akira de Katsuhiro Otomo, laissant alors entrevoir la richesse de la bande dessinée japonaise. Après presque deux décennies de publication le manga s’est greffé avec succès sur le marché français de la bande dessinée, réunissant ses fans autour d’une « culture manga » largement empreinte de fascination pour le Japon. La bande dessinée nippone pèse lourd dans l’édition : 36,11% des nouveautés publiées en 2011 (près de 1 400 mangas traduits en français). Durant la décennie 2000 la vente des mangas a progressé de 500%, plaçant la France au premier rang des pays importateurs, désormais devant les USA. Une bande dessinée sur trois vendues en France est un manga ; et deux-tiers des mangas vendus en Europe, le sont en France. -

Chute and DeKoven 767 INTRODUCTION: f GRAPHIC NARRATIVE Hillary Chute and Marianne DeKoven The explosion of creative practice in the field of graphic narra- tive—which we may define as narrative work in the medium of com- ics—is one with which the academy is just catching up. We are only beginning to learn to pay attention in a sophisticated way to graphic narrative. (And while this special issue largely focuses on long-form work—"graphic narrative" is the term we prefer to "graphic novel," which can be a misnomer—we understand graphic narrative to en- compass a range of types of narrative work in comics.)1 Graphic nar- rative, through its most basic composition in frames and gutters—in which it is able to gesture at the pacing and rhythm of reading and looking through the various structures of each individual page—calls a reader's attention visually and spatially to the act, process, and duration of interpretation. Graphic narrative does the work of narra- tion at least in part through drawing—making the question of style legible—so it is a form that also always refuses a problematic trans- parency, through an explicit awareness of its own surfaces. Because of this foregrounding of the work of the hand, graphic narrative is an autographic form in which the mark of handwriting is an important part of the rich extra-semantic information a reader receives. And graphic narrative offers an intricately layered narrative language—the language of comics—that comprises the verbal, the visual, and the way these two representational modes interact on a page. -

It is within the graphic novel format that one encounters much of the most experimental and exciting work being done in the comics medium today.(1) Graphic novels are now regularly being reviewed in The New York Times Book Review. Museums are acquiring pages of comic art. Esquire and The New Yorker have run comic stories in their fiction issues. A MacArthur grant was awarded to a cartoonist.
