THE RICHARD STOCKTON COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY Office of Public Relations Pomona, NJ 08240 “Nixonland” Author Appears at Stockton for Freshman Year Experience For Immediate Release Thursday, October 23, 2008 Contact: Tim Kelly Stockton Public Relations (609) 652-4950 GALLOWAY TWP., NJ – Rick Perlstein, author of the acclaimed book “Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America” will speak at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in conjunction with the Political Engagement Project and the Freshman Year Experience program at the College. The lecture is free and open to members of the public as well. “Nixonland” was the lead review in a recent edition of the “New York Times Book Review,” and critic George Will gave the volume effusive praise. The author’s first book, “Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus” won the 2001 Los Angeles Times Book Award for history. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, October 28 at 6 p.m. in the Townsend Residential Life Center on the Galloway Township campus. Perlstein is a veteran political reporter and author. From the summer of 2003 until 2005 Perlstein covered the presidential campaigns as chief national political correspondent for the “Village Voice.” He has also published “The Stock Ticker and the Superjumbo: How the Democrats Can Once Again Become America's Dominant Political Party,” an essay with responses from commentators including Robert Reich, Elaine Kamarck, and Ruy Teixeira. In 2006 and 2007 he wrote a biweekly column for “The New Republic Online.” Perlstein is now senior fellow at the Campaign for America's Future, for whom he writes the blog “The Big Con.” # # # .

Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism.

Well, the reason we've been spending so much... I'm just going to erase that. The reason we've been spending so much time together is that we have been promoting our brand new book, A Wolf at the Schoolhouse Door. And we've been, you know, talking to people about it and also doing these very cool virtual book clubs. And that's where a group of people in a city or a state get together, they read the book and then we stop by and chat with them. And it's been absolutely great, but it does mean that Jack and I spent an enormous amount of time looking at each other on Zoom or Google Meet. PART V JFK- MEDIA IMAGE AND LEGACY 242 Chapter 20 Kennedy’s Loyal Opposition: National Review and the Development of a Conservative Alternative, January- August 1961 Laura Jane Gifford The March 25, 1961, National Review related the contents of a recent subscriber letter in a back-cover subscription appeal. This man, “usually understood to be a liberal” and well-placed in New York Democratic circles, wrote the magazine and explained: Of course I am not in agreement with most of your criticism of President Kennedy; nor do I believe you will get far in your obvious editorial support of Senator Barry Goldwater, but renew my subscription, for I can no longer get along without National Review. I find that National Review is a whiskey I must sample once a week. From every other journalist I get a sensation of either soda pop (and who does not finally gag on effervescent, treacly sugar water), or from the intellectual journals of my own persuasion I now get no more than strained vegetable juices unfermented. So I am now a tippler. Eight dollars enclosed. The advertisement’s writer went on to speculate that perhaps National Review’s rarified appeal stemmed from its very lack of broadmindedness; rather, “it is a magazine of fact and opinion, of discourse and criticism, on the central questions of our age,” questions identified as dealing with how to meet the Communist challenge, “resuscitate the spirit in an age of horror,” guard one’s mind against uniformity in the age of mass appeal, and resist collectivism, preserve freedom and teach love of country, respect for past wisdom and responsibility to the future.

The Rearguard of Freedom: The John Birch Society and the Development of Modern Conservatism in the United States, 1958-1968 by Bart Verhoeven, MA (English, American Studies), BA (English and Italian Languages) Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts July 2015 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the role of the anti-communist John Birch Society within the greater American conservative field. More specifically, it focuses on the period from the Society's inception in 1958 to the beginning of its relative decline in significance, which can be situated after the first election of Richard M. Nixon as president in 1968. The main focus of the thesis lies on challenging more traditional classifications of the JBS as an extremist outcast divorced from the American political mainstream, and argues that through their innovative organizational methods, national presence, and capacity to link up a variety of domestic and international affairs to an overarching conspiratorial narrative, the Birchers were able to tap into a new and powerful force of largely white suburban conservatives and contribute significantly to the growth and development of the post-war New Right. For this purpose, the research interrogates the established scholarship and draws upon key primary source material, including official publications, internal communications and the private correspondence of founder and chairman Robert Welch as well as other prominent members. Soref Learning Commons Milwaukee Polonia: Treasure Trove of Photographs Now Online The launch of the UWM Libraries’ vast digital collection Milwaukee Polonia at Polish Fest in June offered some visitors an emotional and gratifying glimpse of long-deceased relatives and long-ago events. One attendee, Craig Bukowski, found images of his grandparent’s family home and all of their children. “Thank goodness for UWM,” he said. The digital collection is comprised of over 32,000 photographs made by Roman B.J. Kwasniewski, a studio photographer who worked on Milwaukee’s South Side from the 1910s through the 1940s. Literally thousands of individuals passed through Kwasniewski’s studio on Lincoln Avenue and had their portraits taken for weddings, First Communions, Confirmations, and graduation ceremonies. Kwasniewski also took his camera into the community, creating a lovingly detailed portrait of the world around him. He took thousands more pictures of street scenes, buildings, parks, businesses, sports teams, and fraternal societies. His photos show an ethnic community during its most cohesive period. This nationally significant collection is used by scholars researching the history of Polish-Americans and by genealogists seeking images of past family members. The UWM Libraries acquired the archive in 1979 and opened it for research in 1991. It has been featured at numerous community events, used to illustrate numerous books on Milwaukee’s Polish community, and been the subject of its own book, Illuminating the Particular: Photographs of Milwaukee’s Polish South Side (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2003) by staff member Christel Maass.

A historian of conservatism looks back at how he and his peers failed to anticipate the rise of the president. By RICK PERLSTEIN APRIL 11, 2017 Until Nov. 8, 2016, historians of American politics shared a rough consensus about the rise of modern American conservatism. It told a respectable tale. By the end of World War II, the story goes, conservatives had become a scattered and obscure remnant, vanquished by the New Deal and the apparent reality that, as the critic Lionel Trilling wrote in 1950, liberalism was “not only the dominant but even the sole intellectual tradition.” Year Zero was 1955, when William F. Buckley Jr. started National Review, the small-circulation magazine whose aim, Buckley explained, was to “articulate a position on world affairs which a conservative candidate can adhere to without fear of intellectual embarrassment or political surrealism.” Buckley excommunicated the John Birch Society, anti-Semites and supporters of the hyperindividualist Ayn Rand, and his cohort fused the diverse schools of conservative thinking — traditionalist philosophers, militant anti-Communists, libertarian economists — into a coherent ideology, one that eventually came to dominate American politics. I was one of the historians who helped forge this narrative.
