University of Nebraska, 2012 Adviser: Stanley Kleppinger The modern movable-Do solmization system based on syllables devised by Guido d'Arezzo was modified and pieced together over centuries by various scholars and pedagogues, each with their own rationale. To date, considerations of the movable-Do system have not sufficiently examined the effects of the vowels contained within its solfège syllables. While vowels have been thoroughly analyzed among vocal pedagogues, that information has not been adequately transferred to the realm of aural theory. Individual vowels contain perceptual qualities and intonational tendencies, due to their physiological articulation and acoustic properties. One aspect was introduced through choral and solo vocal training, the core premise of which is that sung vowels contain inherent intonational tendencies and perceptual qualities due to their physiological generation and acoustic properties. The second main consideration concerns the movable-Do solmization system, and its role as a tool used to assist musicians with accuracy of pitch and intonation. By applying the vowel tendencies described in vocal literature, this document explores the impact vowels have on those singing the solfège syllables used in movable-Do. Because this thesis combines two commonly separated musical fields of study, extant resarch is largely split into two categories: vocal production and solmization. Voice teachers and choral conductors often use solfège in their respective positions. Likewise, those using solmization systems are required to sing. The same instructions given to singers in the interest of healthy and accurate vocal production apply to musicians employing solfège. Despite this, there seems to be little extension of vocal pedagogy toward the use of solfège. The following literature review will explore some of the most necessary texts for ―bridging the gap‖ between these two topics, and illuminate why this document fulfills a role that has thus far been missing. The physiological generation and acoustic properties of vowels have been analyzed extensively in literature relating to speech (Delattre 1951; Denes 1973; Lieberman 1977; Lieberman and Blumstein 1988; Paget 1976; Titze 1993; Titze and 2 Scherer 1983). These authors connect raw acoustic data with physiological articulation to illuminate how vowels are perceived and differentiated. Vocal pedagogy and diction texts intended for solo singers vary in their approach and focus, but share the intent of fostering healthy vocal production, proper diction, and resonant, beautiful, accurate tone. Although significant overlap occurs, some texts heavily emphasize physiology, often basing their methods and data on speech literature (Appelman 1967; Coffin 1976, 1980; Doscher 1988; Sundberg 1977, 1987; Taylor 1908; Vennard 1957; Ware 1998). Others rely primarily on mental imagery, musical examples, and archetypes of pronunciation (Christy 1965; Fracht 1978; Marshall 1953; Moriarty 1975; Wall 2005). In these texts, solmization, if it appears at all, is only mentioned in passing. Literature on choral conducting and pedagogy approaches vowel tendencies differently than texts intended for soloists, due to the desire for unification of pitch and diction across multiple voices. Specifically, they illuminate many potential problems in intonation, including those arising directly from improperly produced vowels (Haaseman and Jordan 1991; Hammar 1984; Hylton 1995; Jordan 1996; Powell 1991). Some even recommend some vowels over others during warm-ups, for timbral and intonational reasons (Haaseman and Jordan 1991; Hylton 1995; Jordan 1996). In correlation, Sundberg (1987, 134-45) mentions several studies that analyze the effects of vowels on tuning in a choral setting. Steven Demorest (2001, 37-58) explores the merits of various solmization systems in a choral setting, but does so from a functional standpoint without mentioning the relative syllabic advantages on timbre or intonation. In every case, 3 however, solmization is either unmentioned, or is conspicuously disconnected from the treatment of intonational effects arising from syllabic content. Solmization systems are used by musicians with extremely diverse backgrounds and specialties. Sometimes solfège syllables are introduced as part of the beginning music curriculum in school systems. Some high school or college choirs use it during the reading process of a new piece. Professional singers familiar with solfège may utilize it in rehearsal for their own accuracy. Experienced singers routinely engage in vowel modification depending on circumstance and register, in both solo and choral contexts.1 The extent to which both intonation and vowel production are emphasized in vocal and choral pedagogy acclimates singers to the modification process. With practice, the sensitivity and physical adjustments required to accurately sing various vowels across the entire vocal range can become habitual and comfortable. In other words, the processes involved with correctly singing a given pitch or phrase in tune regardless of the vowels involved becomes easier with experience. Naturally, musicians who aren‘t as comfortable using their voices are at a comparative disadvantage in terms of accuracy.     Chapter 9 Downstep and recursive phonological phrases in Bàsàá (Bantu A43) Fatima Hamlaoui ZAS, Berlin; University of Toronto Emmanuel-Moselly Makasso ZAS, Berlin This paper identifies contexts in which a downstep is realized between consecu- tive H tones in absence of an intervening L tone in Bàsàá (Bantu A43, Cameroon). Based on evidence from simple sentences, we propose that this type of downstep is indicative of recursive prosodic phrasing. In particular, we propose that a down- step occurs between the phonological phrases that are immediately dominated by a maximal phonological phrase (휙max). 1 Introduction In their book on the relation between tone and intonation in African languages, Downing & Rialland (2016) describe the study of downtrends as almost being a field in itself in the field of prosody.     "Movable do" and "fixed do": what they are, what they aren't, and why "movable do" should be used as the basis for musicianship training. PART I - SYSTEMATIC "Movable do" The "movable do" system is based on the understanding that the names given to the notes serve as reminders, to aid the singer in correctly establishing the distance between the various scale degrees. The syllables are: "do re mi fa sol la ti". In some common misrepresentations of this method, the seventh syllable is given as "si" instead of "ti". The latter is obviously a better choice, since it does not reuse the consonant "s". In the major-minor key system, central to the language of European art- music from 1700 to 1900, and still thriving in certain streams of popular music, chromatic alteration of the "natural" scale degrees comes about mainly because of modulation, in which the tonic note shifts to a new pitch, or else because of scale coloration, in which the new notes are used simply to vary the character of the prevailing scale without suggesting a change of tonic. The boundary between these two procedures is not always clear, but the "movable do" system addresses that line, however fine, in a way that leaves the perceptual and analytical processes open to productive discussion.     Syllables, intonations and Auslautgesetze MIGUEL CARRASQUER VIDAL Syllables and intonations In Greek, long vowels and diphthongs can have acute (rising) or circumflex (falling) intonation. The distinction directly reflects pre-Greek differences in intonation only in oxytone forms, due to the working of a set of accentological laws (the “law of limitation” and the “σωτῆρα”-rule) that make the choice between acute and circumflex automatic in non-final syllables. In Lithuanian, long vowels and diphthongs can also be acute or circumflex, although the acute has become a falling intonation, and the circumflex a rising one. Latvian has a falling intonation (`) corresponding to the Lithuanian circumflex, and two intonations (˜ and ^) corresponding to the Lithuanian acute: the “Dehnton” (˜) implies an originally stressed acute, the “Stoßton” or “broken (glottalized) tone” (^) an originally pretonic acute. In Old Prussian, the distinction is reflected orthographically on diphthongs only (falling/circumflex āi vs. rising/acute aī). In Slavic, the distinction has been neutralized in mobile paradigms (Meillet’s law), but is preserved in original barytones: acute stems remain barytone (a.p. a), while in circumflex (or short) root syllables the stress shifts forward by Dybo’s law (a.p. b). Finally, the Germanic Auslautgesetze also show a distinction in the reflexes of final acute vs. circumflex vowels and diphthongs. Given the above facts, it stands to reason to assign the distinction between rising and falling intonation on long vowels and diphthongs to Proto- Indo-European, or at least to the PIE dialect ancestral to Greek, Balto-Slavic and Germanic. What is the International Phonetic Alphabet? The aim of the International Phonetic Association is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. For both these it is necessary to have a consistent way of representing the sounds of language in written form. From its foundation in 1886 the Association has been concerned to develop a system of notation which would be convenient to use, but comprehensive enough to cope with the wide variety of sounds found in the languages of the world; and to encourage the use of thjs notation as widely as possible among those concerned with language. The system is generally known as the International Phonetic Alphabet. Both the Association and its Alphabet are widely referred to by the abbreviation IPA, but here 'IPA' will be used only for the Alphabet. The IPA is based on the Roman alphabet, which has the advantage of being widely familiar, but also includes letters and additional symbols from a variety of other sources. These additions are necessary because the variety of sounds in languages is much greater than the number of letters in the Roman alphabet. The use of sequences of phonetic symbols to represent speech is known as transcription. The IPA can be used for many different purposes. For instance, it can be used as a way to show pronunciation in a dictionary, to record a language in linguistic fieldwork, to form the basis of a writing system for a language, or to annotate acoustic and other displays in the analysis of speech.

In a lexical tone language such as Mandarin Chinese, rising and falling pitch contours are also used to differentiate lexical meaning. How, then, does the multiplexing of the F0 channel affect the perception of question and statement intonation in a lexical tone language? This study investigated the effects of lexical tones and focus on the perception of intonation in Mandarin Chinese. The results show that lexical tones and focus impact the perception of sentence intonation. Question intonation was easier for native speakers to identify on a sentence with a final falling tone and more difficult to identify on a sentence with a final rising tone, suggesting that tone identification intervenes in the mapping of F0 contours to intonational categories and that tone and intonation interact at the phonological level. In contrast, there is no evidence that the interaction between focus and intonation goes beyond the psychoacoustic level. The results provide insights that will be useful for further research on tone and intonation interactions in both acoustic modeling studies and neurobiological studies. 2 Perception of intonation in Mandarin Chinese I.
