People are gathered at Al-Mustafa Mosque Otahuhu for the prayer of Eid-Ul-Adha Muslims around the world Photo supplied by: Naushad Ali observe this event. At Eid ul-Adha, many Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque. They also wear new clothes, visit family members and friends and may symboli- cally sacrifice an animal in an act known as qurbani. This represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the place of his son. In some traditionally Muslim countries, families or groups of families may purchase an animal known as udhiya, usually a goat or sheep, to sacrifice, but this is not com- mon or legal in many parts of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States or many other countries. In these countries, groups of people may purchase a whole carcass from a butcher or slaughterhouse and divide it amongst themselves or just buy generous portions of meat for a communal meal on Eid-al-Adha. People also give money to enable poorer members of their local com- munity and around the world to eat a meat-based meal. The festival marks the end of Hajj and involves animal sac- rifice as a symbol of Proph- et Ibrahim (AS) sacrifice to Allah, one of the two most important festivals in the Muslim calendar. In the period around Eid al-Adha, many Muslims travel to Mecca and the surround- ing area in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. Package holidays are orga- nized from many countries. Muslims may plan and save for many years to enable them to take part in this event, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. 22 SEPTEMBER 2016 | NZ FIJI TIMES | 3 WEEKEND CRAZY DEALS 2 Cans For $3.99 $0.79 Bottle 1KG $4.99 Sunquick Mums Choice Carnation Range Salt Condensed Milk $4.99 $9.99 $2.99 1 KG PKT Bottle PACK OF 6 Al-Barakah Pick me up Dates Pops Drink Sauce 250ml $0.99 $5.99 $6.99 EACH #13 5KG FREE CUTTING Saads Yogurt Best Bird Royal Basmati Chicken Rice $3.99 $9.99 $19.99 10KG 20KG 10KG Chefs 5A Potatoes Onions Long Grain Tag 1 Rice DIRECT IMPORTERS OF FRESH FIJI VEGETABLES GET FRESH GET FRESH Halal Meats & Seafood LTD Takeaway’s 67 Station Rd, Otahuhu 99 Westney Rd, Mangere Ph: (09) 270 8399 Ph: (09) 275 7197 GET FRESH GET FRESH Veges & Spices LTD Supermarket 81 Station Rd, Otahuhu 99 Westney Rd, Mangere Ph: (09) 276 7779 Ph: (09) 275 7195 4 | NZ FIJI TIMES | 22 SEPTEMBER 2016 NZ NEWS John Key's big week at UN Former Hawke's Bay doctor struck off for 'duping' DHBs A former Hawke's Bay train- One of the family mem- ee doctor duped two district bers whose information was health boards into revealing released said the privacy confidential medical informa- breach was "humiliating" and tion about members of his "painful" and "gave Hirron so family without their consent. much power" as far as his UK legal case was concerned.
