Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. Especially at Thanksgiving the kitchen is the center of activity. From preparing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations. So practicing fire safety in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there is a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing your family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety steps you can enjoy time with your family and friends and keep yourself and your family safe. Thanksgiving by the numbers: • In 2013, Thanksgiving Day was the leading date for home cooking fires with 1,500 fires - 230% above the average number of fires per day. • Unattended cooking was the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and associated civilian injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths. For a safe Thanksgiving: • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns. • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, or bags. • Be sure cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them regularly. Have activities that keep kids out of the kitchen during this busy time. Kids can get involved in Thanksgiving preparations with recipes that can be done outside the kitchen. Turkey Fryer Safety The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) continues to discourage the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that cook the turkey in hot oil. The NFPA believes that as currently designed, turkey fryers are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer. These fryers use substantial quantities of cooking oil at high temperatures and units available for home use post a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. The use of turkey fryers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property. The NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants, for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of “oil-less turkey fryer.” The Dangers of Turkey Fryers: • Hot oil may splash or spill during the cooking. • The fryer could tip over causing hot oil to spill. • Cooking oil is combustible and if it is heated above its cooking temperature, its vapors can ignite. • Propane-fired turkey fryers must be used outdoors. If rain or snow hits the hot cooking oil, the oil may splatter or turn to steam, leading to burns. • Turkeys must be completely thawed before placing in the fryer. A partially thawed turkey will cause oil to splatter or overflow causing serious burns. • Fires have occurred when turkey fryers were used in a garage, barn, shed or under eaves of buildings to keep the appliance out of the rain.
