ABSTRACT Sara Riel has ken overshadowed by the attention paid to her farnous brother, Louis. Yet, a study of her life provides great insight into aspects of the western Canadian past. Her experiences as a Métis Grey Nun and missionary were shaped by complex factors of race, gender, class, and religion. This study also contributes to our understanding of women's, specifically the Grey Nuns', contributions to the development of the West. The Grey Nuns staffed the Catholic missions of the West and provided essential social services such as health care and education. By accepting Métis, Mixed-blood and Aboriginal women, iike Sara Riel, into their order, they demonstrated an ability to adapt to western society and to overcome racial boundaries. In particular, this study of a Métis wornan missionary, sent to serve but also transfom Native society, challenges simple models of missionaries as "conquerors," Catholic sisterhoods as auxiliaries, and Natives as victims. iii 1 would like to thank my supervisor Dr. Sarah Carter for her guidance and suggestions- I would also like to thank Dr. Francis and Dr. Joy for taking the time to attend my defence. Sara Riel to Louis Riel, 7 September 1868' Beginning in the 1840s a unique development occurred in the Catholic mission field of western Canada. Métis and Mixed-blood women2 became members of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, popularly known as the Grey Nuns. The Grey Nuns, a French- Canadian Cathoiic sisterhood, arrived at Red River in 1844 as rnissionaries to the local Métis and Native populations. Joseph-Norbert Provencher, bishop of St. Boniface, hoped that the Grey Nuns would "civilise" the Métis population at Red River by teaching Métis girls to become exemplary wives and mothers to Catholic, sedentary, and agricultural families. Within two years the Grey Nuns had achieved something more than the goals outlined for them by Provencher-they had accepted the fist Mixed-blood woman into their order. In this, they were more successful than the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a male Catholic missionary order dominant in the West, who were specifically instnicted to develop an indigenous priesthood for the western missions. Louis Riel, leader of the Red River Resistance of 1869-1870 and defender of Métis and French-Canadian rights in the Northwest, was one of the Oblates' most famous failures. Although the Oblates sent Riel to Montreai in 1858 to study for the priesthood, Riel withdrew in 1865. By contrast, Louis Riel's sister, Sara, became the fust Métis Grey Nun and, in 1871, the first Métis missionary in the Northwest This thesis explores how race, ethnicity, gender, and class influenced Sara Riel's experiences and her work as a Grey Nun missionary. Sara Riel has received little attention from histonans. In the 1970s, Mary V. Jordan, secretary of the Winnipeg Labour Council, published To Louis hmvour sister who loves vou. Sara ~iel.~Because Jordan focuses on Sara's letters to Louis, the two siblings' relationship is the dominant theme of the monograph. Jordan writes littie of Sara Riel's experiences with the Grey Nuns or her Me as a missionary at he-à-la-crosse in northern Saskatchewan. Because Jordan fdsto place Sara Riel's iife within the context of MCtis history and the history of Cathoiic sisterhoods, she interprets Sara's Life as an extension of Louis'. According to Jordan, Sara emulated Louis to such a degree that her expenences cmbe investigated and interpreted in relation to what was occming in her brother's Me. Sara Riel chose to become a Grey Nun only after Louis forsook the priesthood. She became a missionary in exile only after Louis fled Red River in the afiermath of the Resistance. And, she too felt she had a divine mission to carry out on earth. Jordan concludes that Sara Riel's letters to her brother ultimately reveal the degree to which the two siblings shared a mystical relationship: Sara Riel was Louis' 6bconscience.'~4 Due to the nature of biography. Louis Riel's biographers likewise treat Sara Riel's life as important only to the degree that it can shed light on her brother's experiences. Historian George F. G.     Grade Five Online Learning Activities Fur Trading in Newmarket 1603 - 1820 Grade 5 Social Studies: Heritage and Identity: First Nations and Europeans in New France and Early Canada. The Fur Trade was one of the earliest and most important industries in North America. This timeline shows the chronological order of events. • Champlain was one of the first people to realize the potential of trade in North America. The King of France gave him permission to establish a permanent settlement in Canada, and told Champlain to develop the fur trade. • Not long after, the English saw the financial potential of the fur trade. • Competition between England and France grew fierce. 1603 • Competition in the fur trade also sparked fighting between the First Nations tribes. • In 1610 Champlain sent 18 year old Étienne Brulé to live among the Hurons and explore the wilderness of Huronia. Brulé went on many expeditions for Champlain and the fur traders, travelled over much of the Great Lakes basin to encourage the profitable business of fur trading. • Hudson Bay Company was formed. King Charles granted his cousin, Prince 1670 Rupert, a charter creating HBC as a corporate entity. • From 1670 to 1870 the fur trade was the main focus of the HBC. • A powerful group, made up of nine different fur traders, developed into 1774 the North West Trading Company. They dominated the Government and considered the natural riches of the land to be the monopoly of this company.     Fact Sheet Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart Who are the Grey Nuns? The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart are a community of Roman Catholic consecrated women who strive to create a compassionate world through prayer, ministry and advocacy. There are 111 Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. Fifty-nine Grey Nuns reside on the Yardley, Pennsylvania Motherhouse campus. The Grey Nuns were founded by Marguerite d’Youville in Montreal, Canada in 1737. Marguerite and her followers consecrated themselves to God and served the poor and the most neglected members of society. Marguerite d’Youville died in 1771. At her beatification in 1959, Pope John XXIII gave her the title “Mother of Universal Charity.” In 1990, Marguerite was canonized by Pope John Paul II, becoming the first native Canadian to be elevated to sainthood. What is the mission of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart? In the spirit of Saint Marguerite d’Youville, our foundress, the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart strive to be signs of God’s unconditional love as we collaborate to create a more just and compassionate world. Why are they called “Grey” Nuns? Marguerite D’Youville was the widow of a disreputable man who was involved in illegal liquor trading and she was often unfairly judged by her husband’s unsavory reputation. When she and her sister followers shocked class-conscious Montreal society by dedicating their lives to serving the poor, the women were jeered as “Les Soeurs Grises” meaning “the tipsy sisters,” (the French word “gris” has two meanings, “grey” or the euphemistic “tipsy”).

    MORE PEOPLE BIKING MORE OFTEN River Road to Rivergate Drive Study Recommendations Given the poor lack of north/south connectivity between River Road and the Henteleff Park/South St. Vital Trail corridor, a pathway along the Red River connecting the Minnetonka and Normand Park neigbourhoods would be a positive addition to Winnipeg’s bicycle network. Ultimately, we feel that this pathway could be extended south to Maple Grove Park. Of course, any investment in a pathway connection along the Red River will need to maximize connections to the local and regional bicycle network, and to neighbourhood, community, and regional destinations. We feel that the benefits of this project would be greatly increased by improving walking and cycling connections to St. Amant Centre, Minnetonka School and Park, Greendell Park Community Centre, and Darwin School & Park. Ideally, the planned pathway would also provide a spur giving access across St. Mary’s Road into Dakota Park and the River Park South neighbouhood, but given potential rights of way and their distance from existing traffic signals on St. Mary’s Road, this may not be achievable. Without a signalized crossing of St. Mary’s Road and access through the Okolita Park development into Dakota Park, we feel that the missing connections to St. Amant Cenre, Minnetonka School and Park, and Greendell Park Community Centre should take priority over any connection to St. Mary’s Road. In 1540 the Spanish explorer Coronado ventured as far north as present-day Kansas, but the inland routes across the plains remained the sole domain of Native Americans until 1804, when Lewis and Clark skirted the edges on their epic journey of discovery to the Pacific Northwest and Zeb Pike explored the "Great American Desert," as the Great Plains were then known. The Lewis and Clark Expedition had a direct influence on the economy of the West even before the explorers had returned to St. Louis. Private John Colter left the expedition on the way home in 1806 to take up the fur trade business. For the next 20 years the likes of Manuel Lisa, Auguste and Pierre Choteau, William Ashley, James Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzgerald, and William Sublette roamed the West. These part romantic adventurers, part self-made entrepreneurs, part hermits were called mountain men. By 1829, Jedediah Smith knew more about the West than any other person alive. The Americans became involved in the fur trade in 1810 when John Jacob Astor, at the insistence of his friend Thomas Jefferson, founded the Pacific Fur Company in New York.
