Paul Gilbert, S.I., La preparazione della Ratio studiorum e l’insegnamento di filosofia di Benet Perera Abstract: The paper aims to provide an updated biography of Benet Perera in the historical background of the early years of the Collegio Romano. As one of the first teachers at the Collegio Romano, Benet Perera played a significant role in the debate on the different drafts of the Constitutiones and the Rationes studiorum of the Jesuit order, often generating criti- cisms among his colleagues and brothers in the faith (for instance, Diego de Ledesma and Achille Gagliardi). Debating on disciplines and methods of teaching, these discussions involved some crucial topics from an epistemological point of view: mainly concerning the scientific status and role of metaphysics. Christoph Sander, The War of the Roses Abstract: Benet Perera started his philosophical career with lecturing philosophy at the Jesuit college in Rome in 1558. Al- though numerous documents reveal that his lectures were highly appreciated by his listeners, it seems that around the year 1564 Perera’s teachings were criticized by two of his colleagues at Rome, Diego de Ledesma and Achille Gagliardi. They feared Perera would give too much value to the Arab philosopher Averroes and that Perera’s method of teaching would pose a danger to Christian doctrines by raising doubts whether those pious doctrines can be demonstrated within the framework of an Aristotelian philosophy. This article will shed light on the background of this affair by analyzing the questions of how Perera might have provoked the criticism and why his accusers were so keen on putting forward an investigation against Perera. -

We are told that this is bad. We are told that television is bad for us, that it is bad for our families, and that it is wasting our time. But not all television is that way. Some television shows have what we might call “literary pretensions.” Shows such as Twin Peaks, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and LOST have been both critically acclaimed and the subject of much academic study. In this course, we shall examine a select few of these shows, watching complete seasons as if they were self-contained literary texts. In other words, in this course, you will watch TV and get credit for it. You will also learn to view television in an active and critical fashion, paying attention to the standard literary techniques (e.g. character, theme, symbol, plot) as well as televisual issues such as lighting, music, and camerawork. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit". -

However, the way in which the Church has attempted to explain this great mystery has been the labor of the centuries. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “In order to articulate the dogma of the Trinity, the Church had to develop her own terminology with the help of certain notions of philosophical origin: ‘substance’, ‘person’ or ‘hypostasis’, ‘relation’ and so on. In doing this, she did not submit the faith to human wisdom, but gave a new and unprecedented meaning to these terms.”1 The “and so on” indicated here by the Catechism can include one more term, which we shall examine in this reflection: procession. We understand this term to mean the origin of one from another.2 Most of this reflection will deal with the nature and relationship of the two processions which exist in God: that of the Son and the Holy Spirit. In order to arrive at this point, however, let us begin from a more foundational starting-point by considering what exactly “procession” is in God. St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that because God is above all things, anything that we say of Him based on some likeness that we see in creatures is but a representation of who He truly is. Therefore, any comparison that we draw from creatures to God must not be limited to the level of the creature, but must be expanded to the level of the highest creatures, intellectual substances (as God is in the most perfect degree).3 So it is that, although all procession involves some sort of action, this action cannot be considered uniformly between creatures and God.
