FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 20, 2000

HAMILTON AND JOHNSON NAMED GOLDEN GOPHER CO-TEAM MVP'S

Senior center Ben Hamilton and junior wide recei~er Ron Johnson were named this year's most valuable players at the annual football banquet Monday at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.

Hamilton, a returning All-America selection, is a team captain this season, and considered one of the best centers in Minnesota history. Hamilton has 84 knockdowns to his credit this season and is one of the key reasons for Minnesota's ground success this year. Considered one of the top centers in the country, Hamilton is on a variety of lists for post-season accolades, including the list of finalists for the Lombardi Award- an award presented annually to the nation's best lineman. Hamilton is also a candidate for The Outland Trophy

Following the 1999 season, Hamilton was also given the Award by the team for exhibiting total unselfishness and the most concern for the University of Minnesota community. Hamilton was named first-team All-America by the Associated Press, The Sporting News and CBS Sportsline. He was named to both the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy "Watch Lists." The Golden Gophers ranked 11th in the nation and second in the Big Ten last year in rushing yards, thanks to Hamilton's expertise. He was responsible for 69 knockdown blocks, and allowed just one sack last season.

Johnson is one of the main reasons the Golden Gophers are playing in a post-season bowl game. His 11 touchdown receptions this season have come at opportune times, including last week's fourth-down catch against Iowa. His streak of 34 games with a reception is currently the fifth longest in the nation, and is tied for the longest mark in school history (Tutu Atwell, 1994-97). Johnson is only the third Golden Gopher to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark in school history. He also holds the freshman school record for 38 receptions in his first year.

Johnson continues to amaze both fans and coaches alike. He has shattered a handful of Minnesota reception records, and continues to climb in many others. Johnson has caught a pass in every game of his collegiate career. One of Johnson's most memorable grabs came against Penn State in 1999. Johnson made a spectacular 46-yard catch that helped set up the winning field goal against the number two-ranked Nittany Lions.

Please complete the media credential request form and fax it back to me at (612) 625-0359 no later than noon on Monday, December 18. Frank Kay, media relations director for the Micronpc.com Bowl, has requested that media covering the two competing schools submit their requests to the respective media relations offices for certification, validation and forwarding.

The Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel, 1825 Griffin Road, Dania, Fla., 33004, is the official Micronpc.com Bowl game media headquarters hotel. Room rates are $105 plus tax per night. Call the hotel directly at (954) 920-3500 to make your reservations. Make sure to tell them that you are media covering the Micronpc.com Bowl so that you will receive the special rate. The media hotel is located about 10 minutes from Fort Lauderdale Beach and the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort where the Golden Gophers are staying. Therefore, I located these hotels nearby the Radisson that you can pursue lodging at your discretion. Keep in mind they are not affiliated with the bowl game and do not have special rates.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 20 Who: Mark Rotenberg, General Counsel , Football Coach Contact: Amy Phenix, University News Service, (612) 625-8510

U RELEASES PRELIMINARY FINDINGS AND TAKES DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS MINNEAPOLIS I ST. PAUL--University General Counsel Mark Rotenberg today provided Vice President and ChiefofStaffTonya Moten Brown, Men's Athletics Director Tom Moe and Football Coach e Glen Mason preliminary information regarding unauthorized use of a University of Minnesota long-distance telephone access code by football student-athletes and other University of Minnesota students. Preliminary indications are that between approximately Aug. 29 and Nov. 29, 2000, more than 1,500 improper phone calls were charged to the university's access code, at a cost of more than $1,600. At least 13 football student-athletes misused the access code to varying degrees during this period. All 13 of these student-athletes admitted using the code. However, none of them admitted knowing that the code was only for university-authorized use. These 13 football student-athletes acknowledged charging a total of approximately $420 to the access code. Ten of these 13 student athletes improperly charged less than $100. In addition, approximately $650 of improper charges originated in residence hall rooms of five university students who are not student-athletes. This incident has been reported to the NCAA. Based on the investigation to date, university officials do not believe an extra benefit violation has occurred, nor must any student-athlete be declared ineligible under NCAA rules. At this time, the following steps are being taken: 1) The General Counsel's Office will complete its investigation as soon as possible. It is likely that the number of improper phone calls and the dollar value of these calls will rise when additional phone data is

Additional interviews will also be conducted. 2) Coach Mason will inform each football student-athlete responsible for misuse of the access code that he is suspended until he repays the total value of the improper calls he made. 3) Discipline, if any, against university students resulting from this matter will be undertaken after the conclusion of the internal investigation. 0
