ISBN: 978-80-905977-4-7 Czech engineering plays key role in export Czech engineering has witnessed the very beginning of industrial manufacturing. Since the 19th century, it has been well-known around the world and skills of Czech engineers have always been considered excellent. Even today, Czech manufacturing is, to certain extent, profiting from this positive tradition and Czech engineering companies are oen sought aer by foreign businesses. Among other things, this trend can be proved by high number of subjects interested in investing into various Czech engineering businesses aer November 1989. Despite the initial wariness regarding the “sale of family silver”, this type of cooperation has proved to be successful for majority of businesses. Currently, the main problem of Czech engineering export is the competitiveness of production. This is, obviously, connected to increasing the portion of articles with higher added value, fast implementation of outcomes of applied research and innovations into manufacturing, ability to react with flexibly to individual requirements of clients and providing an immaculate service. And finally, a pressing question regarding the lack of qualified manpower closely related to the oen-discussed reform of technical high-schools and vocational education is still standing. Based on the analysis of current economic situation, a moderate growth of approximately 2,7 percent is expected in engineering sector in 2016. In relation to this, more than 70% of Czech engineering businesses are expecting an increase of exporting activities, especially due to addition of new export territories. In present business climate, the diversification of export destinations is a necessity and is one of the causes behind the growth of the total volume of Czech export and significantly influences the overall productivity of open Czech economy. Based on production machinery export that enabled development of almost all other branches of engineering industry, the basic composition of territorial diversity of the engineering products export remained almost unchanged in recent years. The largest portion of engineering export is traditionally heading to Germany, followed by Russia, China, Slovakia and Poland. The export to the Russian and Chinese markets is strongly influenced by fluctuations of geopolitics and economic situation in these regions. The export to the Russian Federation has been influenced by secondary effects of economic sanctions, such as decrease of value of rouble and insolvency of some Russian business partners. Although the growth of Chinese industry has slowed down, China still remains an attractive export destination, as well as other Asian destinations. It is expected that business interests of our exporters will be increasingly directed to the Middle East territories in future. This, however, depends on political situation in the region. The relationships with US business partners are also being re-developed and Latin America remains in the centre of exporters’ interest despite certain difficulties with customs procedures. Svaz strojírenské technologie 2016 3 Engineering exports The Czech Republic is one of the most industrial countries in Europe. The leading sector in Czech industry is mechanical engineering, which has been one of the pillars of the Czech economy with a history of over 150 years. The result is a combination of positive factors for further development and investment, with a sufficient highly-qualified labour force, adequate infrastructure and technical facilities that allow for a focus on research, development and application of new technologies. Although traditional, this sector has seen significant changes in recent decades. In terms of export, which is crucial to our engineering industry, the record-breaking trade surplus in 2015 was excellent news. Year-over-year exports increased by 7.2% to CZK 3,888.8 billion in 2015. Exports of Czech machines, which are one of the most important items of Czech exports, are increasing every year. This trend is expected to continue in 2016. In terms of the commodity structure, the export of machinery and means of transport contributed significantly to this excellent result, with a share of over 50% in exports. The Czech Republic thus confirms its leading position in this sector. Czech brands such as TOS, MAS, ŠKODA, ŠMERAL, ZPS, ŽĎAS are known around the world. Czech engineering products are exported mainly to European countries (Germany, Slovakia, Poland), but Czech manufacturers are also well established in Russia and China.
