  • Staging 'Peranakan-Ness': a Cultural History of the Gunong Sayang
Staging ‘Peranakan-ness’: A Cultural History of the Gunong Sayang Association’s wayang Peranakan, 1985-95 Brandon Albert Lim B.A. Hons (NUS) A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts Department of History National University of Singapore Academic Year 2010/2011 Gharry and palanquin are silent, the narrow street describes decades of ash and earth. Here in the good old days the Babas paved a legend on the landscape, and sang their part – God save the King – in trembling voices. Till the Great Wars came and the glory went, and the memories grave as a museum. Ah, if only our children on the prestige of their pedigree would emulate their fathers, blaze another myth across the teasing wilderness of this Golden Peninsula. Ee Tiang Hong, Tranquerah (1985) ! i! Preface and Acknowledgements ! This is a story that weaves together many narratives. First, it is a story of how members of a specific Peranakan organisation gathered annually to stage a theatrical production showcasing aspects of their culture. It is also a story of an endeavour to resuscitate the Peranakan community’s flagging fortunes and combat an increasing apathy among its young – which by the 1980s had become leitmotifs defining the state of the community; Ee Tiang Hong’s poem on the previous page is hence an appropriate epigraph. This thesis further tells a story about an iconic performance art situated, and intertwined, within a larger narrative of 1980s Singapore socio-political realities; how did it depict the Peranakan cultural heritage while at the same time adapting its presentation to fit the context? Who was involved in the production, what were the challenges its scriptwriters and directors faced and how did its audience respond to the performance? These are but some questions we will address as the story unfolds.

PERCEPTIONS OF MODERNITY AND THE SENSE OF THE PAST: INDONESIAN POETRY IN THE 1920s Keith Foulcher Nontraditional Malay poetry in Indonesia, the forerunner of "modern Indonesian poetry," is generally said to have begun in the decade be tween 1921 and 1931 in the publications of three young Dutch-educated Sumatrans, Muhammad Yamin (born in Sawahlunto, Minangkabau, 1903), Rustam Effendi (born in Padang, 1903), and Sanusi Parid (born in Muara Sipongi, Tapanuli, 1905). Through their writing of Western-influenced poetry in Malay or Bahasa Indonesia, all three saw themselves as con tributing to the birth of a modern Sumatran (later Indonesian) culture, the basis of a new Sumatran (later Indonesian) nation. As such, they were among those who laid the foundation of the cultural nationalism which in the repressive conditions of the 1930s came to represent an alternative to the overtly political expression of Indonesian national ism . In the following pages, I wish to suggest (1) that through their writing Yamin, Rustam, and Sanusi all articulated a cultural stance which involved both a response to what they knew of European culture and their sense of an indigenous cultural heritage; (2) that there were important differences between the stances of Yamin and Rustam in this regard; and (3) that the poetry of Sanusi Pan6, evolving out of Yarnin's, established an approach to modernity which became the conventional stan dard for the burgeoning "Indonesian" poets of the 1930s. * * * CINTA Galiblah aku duduk bermenung Melihatkan langit penuh cahaya Taram-temaram bersuka raya Melenyapkan segala, fikiran nan renung. Peoples, Place and Performing Arts of the Riau Islands Reviewer Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Pugh-Kitingan Margaret Kartomi, editor, 2019, Performing the Arts of Indonesia. Malay Identity and Politics in the Music, Dance and Theatre of the Riau Islands. Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, Studies in Asian Topics, no 68. Copenhagen: NIAS Press; xx-340 pp., ISBN: 978- 87-7694-259-5 Dispersed from the Straits of Malacca across the South China Sea, from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to west Kalimantan, the 2,408 Riau Islands or Kepri (Kepulauan Riau) comprise Indonesia’s largest province. For a millennia, these islands have formed linkages in trade routes between the Sumatra, Java, south western Borneo, Singapore, Malaya and beyond. The Riau Islands have a long and complex political history going back to at least the Srivijaya Empire (7th to 14th centuries). After Indonesia attained Independence in 1949, Riau experienced various national governments, each with their own policies of development and the arts. Following the end of Suharto’s authoritarian New Order era, which promoted the Javanisation of cultures throughout this vast nation, the Reformasi era saw communities and provinces looking back to their older traditions for inspiration in contemporary times. Riau was granted provincial autonomy in 2004. This book investigates today’s cultural situation in Riau, through focussing on the state of the performing arts of the main indigenous inhabitants of the Riau Islands—the Malays and the Orang Suku Laut (“sea peoples”). Much of the research for this book was conducted from 2012-2016 in Riau with the support of the Indonesian Institute of Science, and funded by a research grant from the Australia Research Council Discovery Projects Funding Scheme.
