Maritime archaeology students are working in ten to twelve feet of mud and water to excavate and map the wreck of the Star, a two-masted schooner built in 1842 in Washington, North Carolina. The Confederates used the ship to run the Union blockade off the coast during the Civil War. The Star was burned in 1862 to prevent its capture by Federal forces.
