Ms. Clarissa Rowe Chair Arlington Community Preservation Commission Town of Arlington 730 Massachusetts Ave. Arlington, MA 02476 Dear Ms. Rowe Thank you for considering The Friends of the Robbins Town Garden application for a CPA grant to restore the garden’s water features. While we recognize that we are making a sizeable request, we feel that this project is of paramount importance to the town and the community. We hope that you agree. Once the fountain is restored, the town and our organization intend to continue to partner to ensure that the fountain is maintained so that such extensive repairs will never again be required. Our commitment to the garden extends beyond the restoration of the fountain. We have already raised more than $2,000 which we plan to spend this coming Spring to begin replacing some of the trees and plants that appear in the garden master plan but have been lost over the years. We hope that restoring the fountain will be an initial step to garnering additional support for further improvements in the garden. Our application outlines the history and historical significance of the Robbins Town Garden. It explains why the restoration of the central fountain is so essential to the town and its’ citizens and describes the broad range of local residents and people from surrounding communities who derive enjoyment from the garden. As an indication of the strong community support for our petition, our application mentions some of the many organizations and individuals who regularly help maintain the garden and whose members use the garden for celebrations, rest and relaxation. -

Arlington Master Plan REVISED Working Paper Series: Historic & Cultural Resource Areas I. HISTORIC AND CULTURAL RESOURCE AREAS A. INTRODUCTION Arlington honors its heritage – preserving the tapestry of historic buildings, structures, objects, and landscapes that serve as visual reminders of the town’s three and one-half centuries of development. From Arlington’s pivotal role in the events that precipitated the Revolutionary War to the legacy of such generous benefactors as the Robbins family, Arlington has much to celebrate – and much to preserve. This element of the master plan provides an overview of Arlington’s varied historic and cultural resource areas and presents a framework for their continued protection and preservation. Arlington’s historic resources are those physical remnants that provide a visible connection with the past. These include the town’s historic buildings and other structures, objects and documents, structures, designed landscapes, and cemeteries. Often used interchangeably with “historic resources”, cultural resources are those tangible assets that provide evidence of past human activities, including both manmade and natural sites, structures, and objects that possess significance in history, architecture, archaeology, or human development.1 Arlington’s cultural resources include the heritage landscape of the Mill Brook, which represents generations of use for industrial purposes. In most instances, a community’s historic and cultural resources areas do not include creative cultural activities that may be present in the modern context unless they represent historic use as creative sites. Together, Arlington’s collection of historic and cultural resources tell a unique story of the people who have called the town home for almost 400 years and the Native Americans who resided on the land known as Menotomy prior to European settlement. -

Chair: Dr. Peter Welsh Dr. Charles Eldredge Dr. Robert Warrior Date Defended: 11 April 2019 The thesis committee for Matthew Bowman certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: Cyrus Dallin’s The Scout: Civic Identity Cast Through a Native Equestrian Monument Chair: Dr. Peter Welsh Date Approved: 11 April 2019 ii Abstract This thesis studies The Scout, a monumental bronze Indian equestrian sculpted by Cyrus Dallin and located since 1916 on a hilltop at Penn Valley Park overlooking Kansas City and the West. Emphasizing its story during the early twentieth century, this analysis utilizes local primary source accounts and secondary sources for two arguments: First, City Beautiful Movement values motivated Kansas City’s procurement of The Scout. Second, Kansas Citians purposefully stationed the statue at its precipice to face a direction aligning with desirable identifying markers, referring allegorically to both romantic frontier pasts and industrial futures. These objectives are achieved by examining the physical sculpture along with visual and material cultures it inspired, cultures developed by publics and institutions that firmly establish The Scout as a civic emblem. Finally, this paper suggests The Scout belongs in national scholarly conversations regarding the appropriation of Indigenous bodies in space and place.
