Work in Progress. Report on Rudolf von Eitelberger: Netzwerker der Kunstgeschichte. Conference held for the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Rudolf Eitelberger (1817-1885). Museum of Applied Art, Vienna, 27-29 April 2017.1 Matthew Rampley Rudolf Eitelberger is commonly recognised as a key figure in the institutional formation of art history as a scholarly discipline. The first professor of art history in Austria and only the second in Europe, he also organised the first international art historical congress in 1873. He persuaded Emperor Franz Joseph to found the Museum for Art and Industry and was involved in the establishment of many other museums of design and industry across the Habsburg Empire. He was also influential in the development of monument conservation and protection in Austria. One can therefore safely state that without him the landscape of the nineteenth-century art world in Austria-Hungary would have been markedly different. How should we, therefore, assess his legacy? Even though his name may be familiar to art historians, he has seldom been the subject of close analysis and, if asked, few would be able to do more than repeat the brief outline provided above. This symposium set out to address that deficit, with 19 presentations on his social and intellectual origins, his involvement in Viennese cultural politics, his work as museum director, and his broader social, political and intellectual concerns. As the initiator of the Vienna School of Art History, he is invariably compared with his better known successors, such as Alois Riegl or Max Dvořák, but this is probably misconceived. -

STEP 2025 URBAN DEVELOPMENT PLAN VIENNA TRUE URBAN SPIRIT FOREWORD STEP 2025 Cities mean change, a constant willingness to face new develop- ments and to be open to innovative solutions. Yet urban planning also means to assume responsibility for coming generations, for the city of the future. At the moment, Vienna is one of the most rapidly growing metropolises in the German-speaking region, and we view this trend as an opportunity. More inhabitants in a city not only entail new challenges, but also greater creativity, more ideas, heightened development potentials. This enhances the importance of Vienna and its region in Central Europe and thus contributes to safeguarding the future of our city. In this context, the new Urban Development Plan STEP 2025 is an instrument that offers timely answers to the questions of our present. The document does not contain concrete indications of what projects will be built, and where, but offers up a vision of a future Vienna. Seen against the background of the city’s commit- ment to participatory urban development and urban planning, STEP 2025 has been formulated in a broad-based and intensive process of dialogue with politicians and administrators, scientists and business circles, citizens and interest groups. The objective is a city where people live because they enjoy it – not because they have to. In the spirit of Smart City Wien, the new Urban Development Plan STEP 2025 suggests foresighted, intelli- gent solutions for the future-oriented further development of our city. Schloss Neuschwanstein
Schloss Neuschwanstein Neuschwanstein Castle, which King Ludwig II built on a rugged hill against a backdrop of picturesque mountain scenery, was prompted by the idea of rebuilding an existing ruin "in the authentic style of the old German knights' castles", as he wrote in a letter to Richard Wagner. Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. The shy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life – now vast numbers of people came to view his private refuge. Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe. Every year 1.3 million people visit "the castle of the fairy-tale king". In the summer around 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant. Throne Room The Throne Room of Neuschwanstein resembles a Byzantine church. Ludwig II had actually given instructions for it "to be based on the Munich All Saints Church" as well as "St Sophia in Constantinople" (Hagia Sophia in Istanbul). The throne, which was to stand like an altar in the apse of the hall, was never built. Ludwig II had expectations of his kingly role that could scarcely be met; this is vividly illustrated by the Throne Hall's many pictures. The Throne Room in the form of a Byzantine church looks as if it is decorated with precious stones and mosaics. The pillars are however made of coloured stucco and the "mosaics" are paintings. Ludwig himself wrote: "The illustrations have been selected in accordance with the elevated purpose of the Throne Room, which is to proclaim that the Throne is the source of authoritative law-making". -

Castles of a Dynasty— the Hohenzollern Route
Explore the highlights of the Hohenzollern Route and discover the history of one of Germany’s most influential dynasties. BY ZAC STEGER Castles of a Dynasty— The Hohenzollern Route he year 2008 quietly marked ninety years since Kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to abdicate, bringing an end to World War I and TImperial Germany. As one of the oldest and most influential families in Europe, the Hohenzollerns had made the Kingdom of Prus- sia the most dominant German-speaking power and, under the guid- ance of Otto von Bismarck, united the various duchies, principalities, and kingdoms into the German Empire. Their story begins far from Berlin in the hills of Swabia along the Hohenzollernstrasse (Hohen- zollern Route), where two castles explore the history of one of Europe’s Top: Sigmaringen Castle. Route takes visitors through the former territories of the family in southern Baden-Württemberg. Sights include the moated castle at Glatt, Beuron Abbey, and Schloss Haigerloch, site of the world’s first 40 GERMAN LIFE · AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2009 atomic reactor. However, two castles are must-sees: the ancestral seat of Burg Hohenzollern and Schloss Sigmaringen, seat of the Swabian family line. A medieval chronicle traces the origins of the House of Hohen- zollern back to the brothers Burchard and Wezil von Zollern, two knights who died in battle in 1061. It was in this same century that the first Hohenzollern fortress near Hechingen is mentioned, though little is known about it. -

Schloss Leopoldskron and the Meierhof Now Reopened As a Hotel
Birthplace of the Salzburg Festival and an exclusive address for travelers to Salzburg For everyone and “Everyman”: Schloss Leopoldskron and the Meierhof now reopened as a hotel This majestic rococo palace dating back to the 18th century is generally held to be the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival, though it gained true world fame as a shooting location for “The Sound of Music”, and has always been a real magnet for artists and thinkers from around the globe. THE SPIRIT OF A PALACE Its Role for the Preservation of the Munich Residence HERMANN J. The Munich Residence in the heart of the bavar- ian capital, severely damaged during World War II, has suf- fered several losses of its tangible heritage during the 600 years of its existence. But the thesis should be allowed that the special tradition and historic character, the nurture of the fine arts as well as stately representation, or in short: the dignity of this place allowed the central palace of the Wit- telsbach family to outlast the centuries in a special quality – including its building fabric. But the reverse proposition should be represented in this text as well: that it is the pru- dent preservation of the palace’s outside, its characteristic layout and interior that offered the opportunity to preserve the sense of a cultural and historic center at this place. Fu- ture risks for the adequate preservation of this palace can only be mastered if the specific spirit of the Residence is the guideline for both responsible maintenance and adequate uses of the building. Roots and Development of a “Spirit of the Munich Residence” Bavaria proudly looks back on more than 1,400 years of history. The complicated tradition of its governments and the corresponding resi- dences goes beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to know that the Wittelsbach dynasty that governed Bavaria from 1180 to 1918 made Munich its single residence in 1506, developing the palace into one of the most splendid centers of power in central Europe. -

Following 15 years as a regular guest conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Mr. Rattle became its chief conductor and artistic director in 2002. He is also artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, where he appears regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic. Between 1980 and 1998 he was principal conductor and artistic adviser of the City of Birmingham Symphony, then music director. Mr. Rattle is a regular guest conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, where he made his debut in 1993. He is also a principal artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and founding patron of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. An exclusive EMI artist for many years, Mr. Rattle has made over 70 recordings for the label.
