Marriage Advice Let your love be stronger than your hate or anger. Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend a little than to break. Believe the best rather than the worst. People have a way of living up or down to your opinion of them. Remember that true friendship is the basis for any lasting relationship. The person you choose to marry is deserving of the courtesies and kindnesses you bestow on your friends. Please hand this down to your children and your children's children. (Jane Wells, 1886) 9. The Art of a Good Marriage Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In marriage the little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humour. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner. (Wilfred Arlan Petersen) 10. Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.     Journeys of the Body, Journeys of the Mind: Ectypal and Archetypal Studies of Cervantes’ The Trials of Persiles and Sigismunda By Joanne Rotermundt-de la Parra A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada August, 2015 Copyright© Joanne Rotermundt-de la Parra, 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis offers an ectypal as well as an archetypal analysis of six characters from Miguel de Cervantes’ posthumous novel The Trials of Persiles and Sigismunda (1617). It examines these characters both as citizens of a specific historical place and time, as well as individuals undergoing the process Carl Jung called individuation, a process experienced by all human beings as they move towards a greater masculine-feminine psychic balance. After an introduction to Jungian literary theory, the character of Antonio Villaseñor is examined ectypally by focusing on his argument with a fellow nobleman and how it reflects the sometimes subtle differences that distinguished an hidalgo from a caballero in the social hierarchy of early modern Spain. The voyage that leads him to the Barbarous Isle is then considered from an archetypal perspective, with the Spaniard progressing from a one-sided, all-male worldview, towards a more balanced masculine-feminine psyche that is symbolized by his union with a barbarian woman named Ricla, the anima figure who represents the missing feminine in Antonio. Transila Fitzmaurice and the ius primae noctis custom that is practised in her homeland introduce the theme of rape, which pervades the Persiles, and its social and legal implications in early modern Spain.

Jacob Strandell Master’s thesis in Sociology (one year), 15 hp/ECTS-credits Author: Jacob Strandell Supervisor: Dr. Åke Nilsén Examiner: Dr. Marta Cuesta Halmstad University, spring semester 2012 School of Social and Health Sciences ABSTRACT Title: On the Possibilities and Impossibilities of Love: Mapping the discursive field of love- relationships, its components, conflicts and challenges. In this thesis I reframe theories of love-relationships in late modernity (by Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck & Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim) in relation to a general framework of discursive theory (inspired by Michel Foucault). I suggest that current developments and contradictions in the field of love-relationships with advantage can be understood in terms of discourse and discursive conflict. Utilizing the discursive framework, I conceptualize two conflicting discursive regimes (as romantic love and individualized freedom), and their components. With these components in mind, I explore how contradicting discursive components are problematized in established risk-discourse, using cases of popular culture as illustrative reference. Risk-discourses force short-term practical solutions, and put pressure on further discursive change by inducing anxiety and cognitive dissonance. Future discourse will have to adapt to several conditions, including the (in)compatibility of discursive components, how well practical strategies work out, how social interaction is organized, and how discursive deconstruction unavoidably have consequences for the fundaments of love itself. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2010 Master's Examination Committee: Dr. Daryl Kinney, Advisor Dr. Patricia Flowers Dr. Russel Mikkelson Copyright by Jennifer Marie Blair 2010 Abstract From humble beginnings, the concert wind bands at The Ohio State University developed from a utilitarian campus group to a nationally recognized program, serving the artistic, educational, and aesthetic needs of the students for whom it exists. From an educational standpoint, the Ohio State band program is not alone in this development. Across the country, similar wind groups began as makeshift military bands, fashioned loosely in the style of traveling professional groups from the early twentieth century. As these bands became established campus ensembles, eventually serving the academic needs of music departments and schools, directors began to selectively model their programs on the philosophical and educational trends of the day. Reflective of the national progression of the wind band movement, the Ohio State band directors demonstrated a desire to perform original and often contemporary literature, to replicate the instrumentation of other leading university band programs, and to seek performance opportunities that would bring recognition to the ensemble and attract talented prospective students. As opportunities and resources grew for band directors at Ohio State, value-based decisions were made, which resulted from the directors' own philosophical views on performance and education, limited only by the support and funding provided by campus administrators.
