Yanahan University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign During the Pleistocene, glacial advances left a small gap in the northwestern corner of Illinois, southwestern Wisconsin, and northeastern Iowa, which were never covered by the advancing Pleistocene glaciers (Taylor et al. 2009, p. 8, fig. 2.2). This is the Driftless Area – and it is one of Illinois’ most unique natural regions, comprising little more than 1% of the state. Illinois’ Driftless Area harbors more than 30 threatened or endangered plant species, and several unique habitat types. Among these habitats are talus, or scree, slopes, some of which retain ice throughout the year. The talus slopes that retain ice through the summer, and thus form a habitat which rarely exceeds 50 °F, even when the surrounding air temperature is in the 90’s °F, are known as “algific slopes.” While there are numerous examples of algific slopes in Iowa and Wisconsin, this habitat is very rare in Illinois (fewer than ten truly algific sites are known in the state). -
From Characters of the Female Reproductive Tract

WILL* Inferring phylogenetic relationships within Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) from characters of the female reproductive tract ABSTRACT Characters of the female reproductive tract, ovipositor, and abdomen are analyzed using cladi stic parsimony for a comprehensive representation of carabid beetle tribes. The resulting cladogram is rooted at the family Trachypachidae. No characters of the female reproductive tract define the Carabidae as monophyletic. The Carabidac exhibit a fundamental dichotomy, with the isochaete tri bes Metriini and Paussini forming the adelphotaxon to the Anisochaeta, which includes Gehringiini and Rhysodini, along with the other groups considered member taxa in Jeannel's classification. Monophyly of Isochaeta is supported by the groundplan presence of a securiform helminthoid scle rite at the spermathecal base, and a rod-like, elongate laterotergite IX leading to the explosion cham ber of the pygidial defense glands. Monophyly of the Anisochaeta is supported by the derived divi sion of gonocoxa IX into a basal and apical portion. Within Anisochaeta, the evolution of a secon dary spermatheca-2, and loss ofthe primary spermathcca-I has occurred in one lineage including the Gehringiini, Notiokasiini, Elaphrini, Nebriini, Opisthiini, Notiophilini, and Omophronini. This evo lutionary replacement is demonstrated by the possession of both spermatheca-like structures in Gehringia olympica Darlington and Omophron variegatum (Olivier). The adelphotaxon to this sper matheca-2 clade comprises a basal rhysodine grade consisting of Clivinini, Promecognathini, Amarotypini, Apotomini, Melaenini, Cymbionotini, and Rhysodini. The Rhysodini and Clivinini both exhibit a highly modified laterotergite IX; long and thin, with or without a clavate lateral region. -

This paper concerns the life-cycle of Carabus dufouri Dejean 1829, one of the most representative species of Carabus in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The study is based on data of the annual activity patterns in the natural habitat, on anatomical ob servations related to the sex and age of the specimens, on the reproductive condition of females and, finally, on the results of labora tory rearing experiments carried out to study the oviposition patterns and the course of development of immature stages. The results indicate that C. dufouri shows the annual rhythm of autumn breeders. However, the rhythm may also be related to the winter-breeder type ofNorth Africa. The present study aims at complementing the data about the distribution of the carabids from the tribes Pterostichini, Spho- drini, and Platynini, containing many diverse, interesting, and endemic species. It gives new records for 67 species and 23 zoogeographical regions in Bulgaria. The material was collected in the period from 1926 to 2021 through different sampling methods. Twenty-three species are recorded for the first time in different regions. Six species are reported for the second time in the regions where they were currently collected. Thirty-one species have not been reported for more than 20 years in Eastern and Middle Stara Planina Mts., Kraishte region, Boboshevo-Simitli valley, Sandanski-Petrich valley, Lyulin Mts., Vitosha Mts., Rila Mts., Pirin Mts., Slavyanka Mts., Thracian Lowland, and Sakar-Tundzha re- gion. -

Muchas de las especies de hospedantes (23) son endémicas, siendo sólo nueve las de hospedantes que también se encuentran fuera de la región Macaronésica. Los Carabidae, como familia más diversa de hospedantes, incluyen 21 especies endémicas y 6 de amplia distribución. Las pautas de distribución de Laboulbeniales dependen de dos factores ecológicos (humedad y biodiversidad de los hospedantes) que varían mucho entre las distintas islas. Palabras clave: Laboulbeniales, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Anthicidae, Blattaria, Ephydridae, islas Canarias. ABSTRACT: The list includes 23 species of Laboulbeniales (Ascomycota) in 8 genera. Six species are new for the Canary Islands. The majority of recorded species infests Carabidae (Coleoptera). Most host species (23) are endemic, only nine hosts also occur outside the Macaronesian region. There are 21 endemic and 6 widespread host species in the Carabidae as most diverse host family. The distribution pattern of Laboulbeniales corresponds with two ecological factors (moisture and host biodiversity respectively) which vary strongly between the different islands. -

The fauna of Carabidae in Azarbaijan, Iran, is very diverse and has not been studied thoroughly. In the following paper, this group of beneficial predators is studied, using samples taken through 2007–2010 across Azarbaijan. Species belonging to 12 subfamilies were collected from 24 different localities. Among this diverse fauna, 3 species, Broscus cephalotes (Linnaeus, 1758), Harpalus (Pseudoophonus) calceatus (Duftschmid, 1812), and Amara (Xenocelia) ingenua Duftschmid, 1812 are new records for Iranian fauna. Caterino, Committee Chair Dr. Peter Adler Dr. Antonio Baeza Dr. Sarah DeWalt ABSTRACT The tropical Andes are a biodiversity hotspot for numerous evolutionary lineages. Allopatric speciation and paleoclimatical events are the major drivers for species diversification in the tropics, especially for páramo species which show high diversity and endemicity. This dissertation elucidates speciation and diversification patterns of widely distributed species of beetles from isolated páramo patches across Ecuador, to provide insight into basic evolutionary processes for Andean insect species. Sampling targeted 17 sites in the páramo ecosystem (3500 – 4000 m), with pitfall trapping, hand collecting and leaf litter sampling. -

New VC records and new British host beetle species. Alan S. Lazenby Laboulbeniales are ectoparasites which grow externally from minute pores on the chiten exoskeleton of living invertebrates. They have been recorded worldwide on hosts including coleoptera - ground beetles and rove beetles are the major hosts, with a few on other genera including water beetles and ladybirds. They have also been recorded on other orders including diptera, cockroaches, ants, millipedes and mites. The fungi can occur singly, scattered over dorsal and ventral surfaces including legs, antenna and mouth parts, or grouped in discrete areas possibly due to transference of spores during mating. See Figures 1-4. The fungi cause little harm to the host, although a heavy infestation can be an incumberance - I have seen a beetle with a large bunch on a leg dragged along like a ball and chain. The majority of Laboulbeniales are host specific occurring on a single species or closely related species. There are more than 265 species recorded from Europe and over 1800 globally. This paper lists all my records of Laboulbeniales including Rachomyces and Asaphomyces and their host beetle species. My oldest record is 86 years old (Fig. 25), it is from the Bombadier beetle, Brachinus crepitans, collected by Phillip Booth in 1930 - Phillip came to a Sorby indoor meeting in the 1980s and he passed on two boxes of beetles, which included this southern species.
