Maidstone Grammar School is a thriving school that performs both well academically and in a wide range of extracurricular activities, and was acknowledged very recently in an Ofsted inspection judging the school to be Outstanding for a second consecutive time. The school’s traditions and culture are incredibly important and it has been an honour and a privilege being the Headmaster since joining the School in September 2012. I have established the future vision and direction for the school and have summarised it into four key areas: community, a place for learning, a place to feel safe and supported and a community within a community which can be found on the school website. In the summer of 2013, MGS achieved excellent GCSE results with just under 50% of all subject entries being graded at A* or A grade. 99% of students gained 5 A*-C grades including Maths and English and 60% of student gaining 5 or more A* grades. We also achieved very high A Level results with just under 60% of all exam entries being graded at A* to B grade and more than one in three results were A or A*. Maidstone Grammar School also champions the development of service and leadership amongst its students and we desire that they all learn to make a difference in the world with their considerable skills and talents. The extracurricular opportunities at the school are many and varied and we would expect the successful candidate to add to or support those. Currently the SLT consists of myself, two Deputy Heads, three Assistant Heads, the School Business Manager and my PA. This vacancy arises due to one of the present deputy heads being successful in gaining a Headship elsewhere. I wish to continue developing the capacity of the SLT and it is my intention the newly appointed Deputy Head has specific responsibility for student and staff development and having strategic oversight of the lower school (Years 7 to 10) but this may vary based on the skills of the successful candidate (job description for this role enclosed). They would also oversee the work of two Assistant Heads who have responsibility for the teaching and learning and the pastoral welfare of those year groups. The successful candidate should have an exemplary record as a leader and a team player and be held in the highest regard at their current school. It goes without saying that candidates should be excellent classroom practitioners with an academic profile which befits the school. It is likely candidates will be seeking Headship in due course. We are also seeking candidates who have significant experience in both academic and pastoral leadership and expect the candidate to have had much impact at a whole school level. In terms of experience, it is important that candidates have managed the performance of fellow teachers and preferably support staff as well as contributed to successfully planned and implemented change. As a person specification I am looking for someone with integrity, commitment, ambition but most of all credibility.     Maidstone Grammar School We have finally reached the end of the term and can all look forward to a restful holiday with friends and family. This term has again been incredibly busy what with the changes to GCSE and A-Level specifications that we are still embedding; the introduction of the new assessment framework to prepare for the changes to the accountability measures; the on-going conversations we are having and plans that we are making to restructure the pastoral and house systems; and the imminent building expansion project that we hopefully will be starting in January. On top of all of this we have also interviewed and appointed the new Deputy Head who will be starting here in September next year to replace the retiring Mr Smith. The two week holiday has come at a good time! As usual this newsletter will pick out and acknowledge a number of success stories we have seen at MGS over the last few months; and there have been many. I would particularly like to thank the entire cast and crew of the recent School Production In this Issue of Zorro. Over 50 students and 10 members of staff pulled together to produce four wonderful performances. The Merchandise goodwill, commitment and dedication they displayed were remarkable and a credit to how they feel about their school and News & to each other. Thank you ever so much.     MAIDSTONE GRAMMAR SCHOOL Learning for Life INFORMATION PACK (sent to Y6 parents) MAIDSTONE GRAMMAR SCHOOL – From the Headmaster Thank you for your interest in our remarkable School. Maidstone Grammar School was founded in 1549 when the town’s first charter gave ‘the mayor, juratts and commonalty full power and authority to set up a grammar school.’ The School used the Corpus Christi Hall in Earl Street and later moved to Tonbridge Road. We moved to Barton Road in 1930, thanks to a gift of land by George Foster Clark. Our self-contained, sixteen-acre site has allowed us to expand to meet new demands. Our main school building is around a Tudor-style quadrangle with a cloister on one side. A block was added in the 1960s. A Sixth form and arts and crafts block was added in 1981. This newer building completes a second quadrangle. We have thirteen science laboratories, a language laboratory, seven computer rooms, a set of music rooms, lecture theatre, gymnasium and sports hall. As well as our 15 classroom teaching block and refectory, our 3 classroom Applied Learning Centre opened in September 2009 and in September 2011 our new Sixth Form Centre and Food Technology building opened. At the beginning of September 2007 the School changed its status from a ‘voluntary controlled School’ to a ‘Foundation School,’ This means that the governing body owns the land and buildings and employs the staff. However, we continue to maintain our close links with Kent County Council. Maidstone Grammar School has 1270 pupils and 130 staff. We take boys at 11 Plus by examination and boys and girls at 16 Plus on their GCSE results.

There must "be thousands of former M.G-.S. pupils throughout the world who have no contact with the school and their former colleagues. Even the Recent Leavers' Function attracts only about one-third of the year's leavers, and some of them do not join. It is hard to understand why; surely £1 per annum is not excessive. Maybe they just want to "forget about the school, but who in their right mind would want to? As a humanistic voice and advocate for children, the NCFA also acts as a focal point and network for those individuals and organisations seeking sustainable partnerships, information, education and/or training on child-centred approaches and children's rights in football. The NCFA seeks to protect childhood through football. In more than 40 countries there are traditions of Global Peace Games (GPGs) initiative from the United Nations to raise the profile of peace through sport. The Flanders GPGs were inspired by the Christmas Truces of 1914 and how those symbolic moments of First World War history relates to the contemporary mission of the Peace Village, Messines, Belgium and British project partners the NCFA. The GPGs was funded by Erasmus+ (European Union). The funding application was directed by the Peace Village. The Peace Village commissioned the NCFA to provide 20 young people (key stage 3) to represent the United Kingdom at the GPGs. It was agreed that the GPGs give the children the freedom to play the game and learn about conflict resolution in their own way. It provides young people with the opportunity to experience cross-cultural learning through cross-curricular activities. The GPGs provide facilitators and teachers with the opportunity to engage young people in a range of subjects using sport as a vehicle.

When a school doesn’t have enough places for everyone who wants to go there, it has to have a way of deciding which children should get in. Often a school takes the children who live closest first, so if you live further away, it may have filled all its places with children who live nearer.
