PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I am very proud to present the President’s report for season 2017-18 to our affiliated Clubs, past and present players, sponsors, parents, volunteers and supporters of the Inner South East Cricket (ISEC) league and the All Girls Cricket Competition (AGCC).

In a year that has seen cricket in Australia face tremendous challenges both off the field, with initially the “players pay dispute” and most recently, on the field, with the “ball tampering incident”, Cricket Australia’s Purpose, to “Inspire everyone to love cricket” and Vision, of cricket being “Australian’s favourite Sport” has been questioned. The outcry on social media platforms (let alone the multitude of BBQ and Water Fountain debates) surrounding “ball tampering” illustrated that the game is always bigger than the individual, and that cricket is very much part of the Australian DNA. What other sport, in Australia, has 26 million selectors??

I see the role of the ISEC, AGCC and affiliated Club administrators, players, coaches, parents, volunteers and supporters, is to collaboratively work together, as custodians of the game, to not only innovate and progress but ensure the Spirit of Cricket is always upheld. This is and will always remain the corner stone of how ISEC and the AGCC administer your competitions.

As per our Constitution (following the 2016-17 AGM), a new Committee was formed consisting of 11 volunteers to take administrative responsibility of our 116th season. I would like to acknowledge and thank them all for their tireless work and dedication throughout the season. Having been nominated for the inaugural Cricket Association of the Year, in the “A Sport for All Awards – Victoria”, ISEC and the AGCC continue to be acknowledged as two of the most progressive boys and girls junior leagues in Victoria and the work your committee does continues to strengthen that standing. The Committee consisted of the following people;

 John Ribbands – Vice President  Neil Daly – Secretary  Tim Boyce – Treasurer  Peter Ciavarella – Junior Coordinator  Libby Nicholas – Secretary All Girls Cricket Competition  David Williams – Representative Teams Coordinator  Ganesh Desai – Umpires Coordinator  Phil Burns – Competition Coordinator  Tom Facey - Competition  Greg Hanson - Competition  Michael Lawson - Competition

I would like to specifically acknowledge our Secretary and ISEC Life Member, Neil Daly for his continued passion, support and tireless commitment to ensure ISEC provides the best competition it can provide. In addition, I would like to thank those committee Members, whose individual reports are enclosed, for taking stewardship of the specific portfolios on the committee.

Following the success of last season’s experimental introduction of the new playing formats for an U11 competition, we introduced the new junior playing formats across all five U11 competitions and three U13 competitions in 2017-18. In addition, the AGCC introduced the new playing formats, Stage Inner South East Cricket

1 and Stage 2, for the 13 and under competitions as well. This meant some 587 boys and 233 girls played under the new formats during the season.

The feedback we received from Clubs, coaches, players and parents regarding these new formats was overwhelmingly positive and we will continue to roll-out the new formats (Stages 1 and 2) across our competitions in the 2018-19 season.

Although a strong supporter of the new formats and what they provide young boys and girls, their introduction creates one major logistical issue - Where do we find the ovals for these teams to play? This occurs as the new formats reduce the number of players per team which consequently increases the number of teams playing. With more teams playing we need more grounds on which to play. As you cannot just build new ovals, we looked at alternative options but clearly the option of utilising existing grounds with quality approved roll-out pitches, where 3-4 games could be played on a single oval at the same time, was the best solution. So, at ISEC’s instigation, and with the investment, support and understanding of the issue from Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the City of Stonnington we were the first League in Australia to trial roll-out pitches for the new formats.

We trialled the roll-out pitches at under 11 games on two “turf only” grounds, TH King and Waverley ovals on both Friday night and Saturday morning with great success. The success of these trials, we understand, will be used by Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia to introduce roll-out pitches around the country, to ensure the major obstacle associated with the new formats is overcome. We thank Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia and the City of Stonnington for their commitment to grass roots cricket and the community in which our Clubs serve.

In the past season, some 3,360 boys and girls participated in playing cricket across our League in Club run Milo IN2Cricket programs, the League T20Blast centres, the underage boys, the Representative program, the enhanced T20 Competition and of course the All Girls Cricket Competition (AGCC). The following points illustrate the diversity of the competitions ISEC provide as well as the Milo IN2Cricket and the League T20 Blast programs delivered by Clubs.

 22 competitions & 163 teams play in Home & Away,  5 competitions & 20 teams play in T20 Cup Challenge,  4 competitions, 29 teams & 307 girls played in the AGCC,  926 boys and girls played T20Blast or Milo in2Cricket across ISEC,  104 boys and girls played representative cricket for ISEC across 8 teams,  3,360 Boys and Girls played cricket with ISEC/AGCC Clubs.

With in excess of 210 teams and an increase of some 600 boys and girls playing cricket over season 2016-17, we thank the work all our affiliated Clubs and specifically the volunteers within those Clubs did throughout the year to promote cricket.

This year ISEC fielded 8 Representative Teams in the January VMCU carnival, winning the inaugural Julie Savage u14 Girls Shield. I would like to thank our Representative Coordinator, David Williams and his team of coaches for putting on an experience all boys, girls and parents enjoyed. Of course, congratulations to all our Players who conducted themselves extraordinarily well across the carnival. Inner South East Cricket

The popularity of girls playing cricket has continued, and 2017-18 saw the fifth season of the All Girls Cricket Competition (AGCC) commence. From humble beginnings of 45 players and 5 Clubs in 2013- 14, this season players numbers grew to over 300 and the number of Clubs engaged grew to 38.

Cricket Australia’s “Growing Cricket for Girls Funding” program, launched in 2016-17, has enabled many clubs and associations to start to promote, develop and provide opportunities for girls to play cricket. The AGCC, a recipient of this funding, continues to be at the forefront of growing the opportunities for girls to not only play junior cricket but have identifiable pathways to continue to play senior Women’s cricket at Premier League or Women’s Community Clubs.

As mentioned above, although the AGCC has always provided a modified format for our younger girls, we introduced the new game formats, Stage 1 and Stage 2, to our 13 and under competition. I would like to again acknowledge the SECA committee and their affiliated Clubs for their support in continuing to build the AGCC as now the largest independently run All Girls Cricket Competition in Victoria.

The AGCC is all about the participation of girls playing and enjoying cricket whether that is in a team coordinated by one Club or in a composite team we can accommodate both. We ran three 13 and Under competitions and one 16 and under competition this season, and are looking to expand the number of competitions in season 2018-19. As the geographical spread of the AGCC participating Clubs covers a large distance, we are very much aware of the travel time required on a Wednesday afternoon for parents to get their daughters to games. In season 2016-17, due to the number of teams registered, we were able to provide a North and South zone in the 13 and under competition. We retained that model last season and hope, with further growth of team numbers this coming season, we will be able to provide a north and south zone for all our 13 and under competitions.

I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of our All Girls Cricket Competition (AGCC) Clubs. In particular, I would like to thank and acknowledge the specific work done by Libby Nicholls, our AGCC Secretary. Libby’s commitment and dedication over the last five seasons has always ensured there was clear communication between and support for all Clubs, ensuring the season ran smoothly. Her friendly calm approach, to working and promoting the AGCC over the years, has being a key reason for the continued engagement of Clubs, players and parents and success of the competition.

With the release of Cricket Victoria’s Melbourne Metropolitan Cricket enhanced strategy last year, we have held numerous discussions with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Southern Bayside. The purpose of these meetings, which has now incorporated SECA, is to determine how, together, retaining the quality, integrity and heritage of the competition from both associations, we could provide an even better cricketing experience for all the boys and girls playing across our associations. The six key outcomes, identified by Cricket Victoria, for this strategy are;

1. Drive participation and sustainability of club cricket, 2. Generate greater investment and support for competitions and clubs, 3. Develop a unified voice for cricket at a local level in speaking with local government, commercial, community and other relevant stakeholders, 4. Drive a greater profile and engagement with the local community, 5. Streamline the management of competitions and clubs, 6. Ensure sustainability of cricket infrastructure inclusive of turf pitches. Inner South East Cricket

As a result, ISEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cricket Victoria, Cricket Southern Bayside and SECA to progress discussions on the development of a single governing structure across South East and Bayside cricket regions. Further consultation and information will be provided to our Clubs as we progress this exciting opportunity. For further information please visit http://www.cricketvictoria.com.au/melbourne-metropolitan-cricket-strategy/

I would like to thank our major sponsor Kookaburra Sport. As a League their continued support has been invaluable and has enabled us to;  Dress our representative teams in again the best uniform across all associations,  Increased the level of coaching support for our Representative teams,

I would urge all ISEC affiliated Clubs to ask Kookaburra Team Apparel about what they can do for you when ordering for next season.

As I reiterate each year I see the role of the Committee is to leave the League in a better position than it was found in and I believe we have continued that journey again this season. During the coming season we will continue to work with our affiliated Clubs and cricket stakeholders to strive to provide a cricketing experience for both boys and girls to develop, maintain and grow their love of cricket.

I forward to your support and engagement with ISEC and the AGCC in the coming season.

Yours sincerely,

Iain Giles President – Inner South East Cricket Chairman – All Girls Cricket Competition

Inner South East Cricket

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARY

MEMBERSHIP

The League comprised 27 Clubs in the Boys’ grades and 38 pledged Clubs with 22 Clubs actually participating in the All Girls’ grades with the following teams:

2017-18 2016-17 Under 17 18 18 Under 15 41 40 All Girls 16 & Under 5 5 All Girls 13 & Under – Stage 2 9 14 All Girls 13 & Under – Stage 1 15 0 Under 13 60 54 Under 11 44 44 Totals 192 175

THE COMPETITION

As can be seen with the affiliation figures above, with the influence of Junior Formats, the League enjoyed yet another season of overall growth in numbers. The steady numbers of Under 11 players is probably due to club encouragement of T20 Blast for young cricketers not quite ready for hard ball competition.

Significantly, this is the ninth successive season of growth for the League. ISEC remains the fourth largest Junior competition in Melbourne.

The Competition began its fourth season as an exclusively Junior League with the Executive initiating several additions to the competition throughout the season which included:

 All U11 grades played under the new Cricket Australia formats  Three U13 grades played under the new Cricket Australia formats  Together with Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria and Stonnington Council, four portable Flicx pitches were purchased. The pitches were used in the last 3 rounds of U11 Friday & Saturday, proving to be very successful and popular with players and families.

The All Girls Cricket Competition continues to grow, with a note of thanks to the ongoing commitment and leadership of our President, Iain Giles and AGCC Secretary, Libby Nicholls.

Turf Cricket on Sundays remains popular, enabling the League to offer two U17 and U15 grades. These grades have continued as development areas for our affiliated turf Clubs. Thanks to Ganesh Desai for his dedication and organisational skills as Umpire’s Co-Ordinator.

Though self-grading in U13 and U15 grades continues to even out the Competition, on a negative side, the ‘B Grade’ mentality continues amongst Clubs. The League had to step in and elevate sides to one U15A Grade when only four Clubs applied. Better processes for deciding grading must be explored next season.

The growth of the competition also brought the initial affiliation process to breaking point. It was disappointing to deal with the poor attitude of so many people when the draws were released. There was a genuine lack of understanding about the process and commitment required in the short time frames offered by the League. Some comments were very personal and aggressive.

Inner South East Cricket

ISEC’s response for 2018/19 will require affiliations to be submitted 3 weeks prior to season’s commencement. Due to the failure of several clubs to submit affiliations, these will probably be required to be electronically submitted from next season.

The organising of the Kookaburra Finals Series is always a difficult period. Dealing with Councils, appointing umpires, players’ qualification auditing, organising Executive Members and Life Members to present Premiership medals & shields - it is a time consuming task. This Season, sincere thanks goes to the help from fellow Executive members.

Peter Ciavarella organised the Competition’s Presentation Night held Glen Eira Council Town Hall this season. Another excellent turnout was a good indication of the respect our competition is held in by Club officials, players and their families. Congratulations to all trophy winners.

THE FUTURE

The Competition will see some more change with the implementation of Junior Formats in all U13 Grades for 2018/19. It will take planning and the continued co-operation from Clubs to ensure a smooth transition.

Of course, the heads of agreement with Cricket Victoria, Cricket Southern Bayside and South East Cricket Association heralds more change in the near future, should the progression prove attractive for Clubs. Personally, it is difficult to see why it would not. Despite the heartening state of ISEC, it would be prudent to affiliate with a senior body and ensure the continuity of junior cricket in this region.

The finest compliment we received was that ‘since standing alone, ISEC has grown from a village Association to offering development and solid competition at all age levels’. It has taken the dedication and foresight of many for this to have been achieved.

VMCU CARNIVAL

In 2017/18, the League again fielded seven VMCU Representative sides. Thanks to David Williams for his planning, administration of trials, communications and coach recruitment. Again all Representative trials and the hosting of practice matches were at one location, Basil Park, which was of assistance in ISEC’s preparations.

It was pleasing to win the inaugural U14 Julie Savage Shield. Well done to all.

ALL GIRLS CRICKET COMPETION REPORT

The AGCC has completed its fifth year since inception with continued expansion across all age groups. From the first season in 2013/14 with 5 clubs, 5 teams and 47 players, the competition has grown to include 38 clubs, 29 teams and a total of 307 girls enjoying playing cricket. With club input at the Annual AGCC Planning meeting, it was decided to keep the competition structured across two days this season with 13 & Under teams playing Wednesday afternoons and 16 & Under teams playing Sunday mornings. The growth in clubs and teams in the 13 & Under age group enabled grading in both geography and skill level. Cricket Australia Stage 1 and 2 formats were adopted for 13 & Under, with 16 & Under teams playing Stage 3 rules. The new formats suited the AGCC philosophy that the competition is all about participation, fun and development of junior players.

After 14 rounds of T20 games, with Semi-finals and Grand-Finals in each age group, congratulations goes to this season’s Premiers:

13 & Under Stage 1 North Zone East Malvern Tooronga 13 & Under Stage 1 South Zone St Brigid’s/St Louis 13 & Under Stage 2 Parkdale 16 & Under Beaumaris

Many AGCC players were selected for rep teams. Thanks to David Williams for his efforts in setting up teams. For the first time ever ISEC was able to enter 2 all girls teams in the VMCU Representative Carnival both coached by Prahran Premiers Womens player, Ella Austin. Our U12 Claudia Fatone side played valiantly finishing 6th from 11 teams. Our inaugural U14 team, with many girls under age and doubling up, pulled off an amazing win to take out the Julie Savage U14 premiership.

The philosophy of the AGCC is to grow participation of females playing cricket and we will continue to work with clubs across the leagues to achieve that goal. One of the next challenges to be addressed in the new season is the players’ journey from junior to senior cricket, in particular to find an appropriate path for players graduating from the AGCC.

Thanks to all clubs who were part of the AGCC committee this year – your involvement made the experience possible for the girls. For his help and special commitment to player development, coaching and representative cricket, special thanks goes to David Williams and Prahran Cricket club. Thank you to Neil Daly for his input and vigilance, overseeing the competition to ensure it was of the highest standard. Thank you to Ganesh Desai for a terrific job organizing the umpires for all finals games. We value the continued relationship and support of CV and Regional Cricket managers Paul Gilchrist and Stuart Clark. Thanks also to Meg Keating and support of the Melbourne Stars. Thanks to CA and the Growing Cricket for Girls Fund that enabled many new teams to form this season.

Finally we would like to acknowledge the amazing service given by Iain Giles. Iain has been tireless in his passion and enthusiasm for the AGCC, creating, sustaining and growing the competition over the past five years. Without Iain’s passion and enthusiasm the AGCC wouldn’t have been possible.

For season 2018/19 we encourage all ISEC clubs to get on board, appoint a girls’ cricket advocate, and commit to promoting the opportunities for girls wanting to play cricket in the community.

Libby Nicholls Secretary All Girls Cricket Competition Inner South East Cricket

REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

A busy ISEC 2017/18 has been completed, with our Representative Cricket again being a major part of the season. Thanks to all clubs and Junior coordinators with your ongoing support of our representative program led to another successful campaign by ISEC teams.

ISEC again fielded 7 teams during the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union Competition (VMCU) from under 14 boys and girls to under 18 boys. This was the first season that an U14 Girls grade was formed, the Julie Savage Shield.

The inaugural U14 Savage Shield proved to be a very good competition for ISEC as we took out the grand final defeating Mornington Peninsula.

My thanks goes to our very committed Coaching group who worked diligently through the nomination process, trials, practice matches and game planning leading up to the carnival. Our teams displayed consistent fighting qualities on the field but also gained tremendous compliments for their endeavour to play the game in a respectful manner from all oppositions, Umpires and visiting teams.

We again had a lot of very good individual results throughout the carnival.

Ben Earney and Tom Giles led our U18 Phil Arnold Shield Boys team. The team finished the carnival in 8th position from 11 teams. The closeness of this particular group was evident as all games where extremely competitive and many close results. No finals for our U18 Boys this season.

Bhava Bhatia and Benji Gore both led the way with the bat finishing 20th and 23rd in the batting averages. Benji with a top score of 54. Videsh Wagh was our standout bowler finishing 2nd in the averages with 13 @7.85 with a best of 4/20.

ISEC stalwart Garry Kitto and Tom Giles coached the U16 Jim Beitzel shield. The boys were in a very difficult grade and finished 8th on the ladder from 12 teams. No finals for this team either this season unfortunately.

Captain Will Dixon and Christian van der Merwe were our run scorers finishing 8th and 14th in the averages. Christian scoring a 50 (54) during the carnival. Christian was also our best bowler finishing with 8 wickets @ 14.63 and a best of 4/23.

No U16 Jim Mackay shield team was entered this season due to lack of numbers.

The U14 Russell Allen Shield was led by first time ISEC Coaches Blake Parsons and James Boyce. Our team had a strong carnival finishing 3rd after the pool games, winning a quarter final but were beaten in a Semi Final by eventual winners South East Cricket Association.

Hugo Hughes was as consistent as ever amassing 157 runs @31.4 with a top score of 57* and a top ten finish in the very competitive batting averages in this age group. The had very consistent performers in Riley Voulanas, James Milton and Jackson Traplin all with 8 wickets apiece and Edward Nelson with 7. Diyon De Silva was consistent in the field with his catching and run outs a feature.

The U14 Des Nolan Cup team was coached by a league legend in Stephen Zayler, and James Gray. A top 4 finish after the pool rounds saw the boys make the finals and unfortunately be defeated by Box Hill Reporter in the Qualifying finals. Inner South East Cricket

Marcus Wiseman and Will Beattie were our main run getters both scoring more than 90 runs over the carnival, with Will getting a 50 (52). Will was also our best with the ball grabbing 5 wickets.

The U12 Boys Keith Mitchell Shield was again led by Sam Hill. Again ISEC proves to have another great carnival in this grade finishing on top of the ladder with 5/5 wins. A finals berth saw our boys uncharacteristically lose their qualifying final to Box Hill Reporter.

Jaskabeer Singh was our main contributor with the bat scoring an impressive 128 runs @32. Wes Banks finished 2nd in the bowling averages with 9 wickets @7.56 with a best of 4/11. Wes was also magnificent in the field with 5 catches and a run out.

Our U12 Josh Browne Plate team was coached by 1st time ISEC Coach Harrison Rees. This season was also the 1st time that junior format modified rules (stage 2) were introduced into representative cricket.

A top 4 finish after the pool games also unfortunately saw our team eliminated in the qualifying finals to Box Hill Reporter. This day proved to be a haunting day for ISEC with 3 of our finals teams all eliminated in the Qualifying finals on the same day. Only 1 other ISEC team making it to a semi Final. Herbie Fischbacher and Tom Coath were our standout batters both amassing 77 runs in the Carnival. Billy Robinson finished in the top 4 of the bowling averages with 8 wickets @7 with a best of 4/13.

ISEC rep teams at U12 Claudia Fatone and U14 Julie Savage were both Coached by Ella Austin.

The U12 girls finished outside the finals in 6th place. Our U14 Savage shield team are the inaugural winners after finishing 4th after the pool games. An outstanding job by Ella and all parents associated with both our girls’ teams.

Katherine Dekel, Ruby Burns and Ameile O’Meara were both in the top 6 run scorers in the batting averages. Katherine, Ruby and Uvindee Dona Ajjujage were among the competitions best with the ball.

A special thanks to all Team Managers. They not only helped with on field duties but with Uniform collection and compilation of player votes, and had a significant impact on the overall performance of the representative program. Your efforts are most appreciated.
