NATIONAL FINALS 2018 FAMILY AND FRIENDS INFORMATION Family and Friends Host Hotel – Family and Friends will enjoy staying at the Historic Downtown Holiday Inn. The hotel is within short walking distance of the Mobile Civic Center Theater, the venue for the 61st National Finals, and all the shops and restaurants in downtown Mobile. Reserve your room(s) by calling 251.694.0100 and requesting a room in the Distinguished Young Women block. Room rates are $119 per night for either a double queen or a king room. Reservations are limited, so contact the hotel soon. Below are other downtown hotel options that may be available. We also have a block of rooms at the following, but Family and Friends Activities will be centered around the Holiday Inn. The Admiral (a Hilton hotel) $129/night 251-432-8000 Quality Inn $81/night 251-433-6923 Transportation from the Mobile Regional Airport – UBER and taxi/shuttle services are available to area hotels from the Mobile Regional Airport. You can contact Mobile Bay Transportation Company at MobileBayTransportation.com or 251.476.7711 for information. Most national car rental agencies are also available at the Mobile Regional Airport. Registration – All guests are required to register, at a cost of $10 per guest. This gets you a badge which grants limited access to certain activities where the participants are present (i.e. tailgating after the programs). Any family member or friend of the family may register for any of the daily packages as detailed below. In order to make the necessary reservations for selected activities, please submit your forms by the registration deadline on Friday, June 1. Check-in takes place in the Family and Friends Hospitality Suite in the lobby of the Historic Downtown Holiday Inn. The check-in room will be open on Wednesday, June 27 from 9am-4:30pm and Thursday from 9am-1pm. FAMILY AND FRIENDS ACTIVITY PACKAGES To take full advantage of all Mobile and National Finals has to offer, and to get to know the other attendees from around the country, we make several packages of activities available for family and friends. Please Note: • Program tickets are not included in the cost of the package and must be ordered separately. • The full 3-day package includes all of the daily packages below - plus, the $10 registration fee will be waived. Daily Package Descriptions Wednesday, June 27 - $40 for the day ● Orientation Lunch and materials – extremely important for family members to be present ● Tour of University of South Alabama (optional) ● Tickets to tour Mardi Gras Museum ● Grab & Go Dinner – Buck’s Pizza ● Community Night – a one-hour performance at the Civic Center Theatre featuring the 51 participants ● Tailgate – visit with your daughter and her host family (must be registered to attend) Thursday, June 28 - $60 for the day / $40 for kids (12 & under) ● THURSDAY TOUR includes: ● Trolley ride to USS Alabama and Battleship Park from Holiday Inn ● Tickets to USS Alabama (includes airplane hangar and submarine) ● Lunch at Battleship Park ● Trolley ride to Fort Conde where you will board a Duck Boat for a tour of historic downtown Mobile and the surrounding waterways ● Grab & Go Dinner – Taco Food Truck ● Tailgate – visit with your daughter and her host family (must be registered to attend) Friday, June 29 - $75 for the day ● Travel to destinations via air-conditioned motorcoach ● Tour of Bellingrath Gardens and Home ● Relaxing afternoon on beautiful Dauphin Island with luncheon included ● Grab and Go Dinner by Godfather’s Pizza ● Drinks and snacks in hospitality room ● FRIDAY TOUR includes: ● Travel to destinations via air-conditioned motorcoach from Holiday Inn ● Tour of Bellingrath Gardens and Home ● Relaxing afternoon on beautiful Dauphin Island with lunch included ● Grab & Go Dinner – Saucy Q’s BBQ ● Tailgate – visit with your daughter and her host family (must be registered to attend) Additional Friday Event: The Mayor’s Leadership Breakfast will be held in the Historic Downtown Mobile Holiday Inn’s Bienville Ballroom at 7:30am. The fifty-one participants will be in attendance, along with state/local chairmen and key leaders from the Mobile community. Tickets are available for $25 per person and are limited to parents only. Pending availability, additional tickets may be purchased at registration. Saturday, July 1 - $10 for the day ● State Specialties Party – all states set up booths where they share a taste of their state. This is another opportunity for you to spend time with your daughter! We’ve included some additional information to give you a preview of some of Mobile’s attractions you will have the opportunity to explore. Bellingrath Gardens and Home Enjoy 65 acres of floral pageantry in a Southern estate garden. Bellingrath Gardens and Home features a 15-room museum home, vast gardens and a bayou boardwalk. The gardens include a bridal garden, a conservatory, a great lawn, a nature walk, an Oriental garden, a rose garden, a chapel, the Mermaid Pool, Mirror Lake, an observation tower, and a riverside pavilion. Enjoy great shopping in the gift shop, too. Dauphin Island Beach Located on the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the sparkling sand and cool surf of Dauphin Island begs one to dip their toes in the sand and enjoy the sun. Boasting beautiful foliage, natural wildlife, plentiful camping sites and some of the best beaches along the Gulf Coast, a day trip to Dauphin Island is truly an event you don’t want to miss. Isle Dauphine Country Club graciously opens its doors to Distinguished Young Women for swimming (beach and swimming pool), dining and a relaxing get-away! Gulf Coast Ducks Quack! Quack! This hilarious yet informative adventure covers over 3,000 years of local tales (some tall) as well as exciting stories about the USS ALABAMA, Battleship Memorial Park, Mobile Bay, the Port of Mobile, and much more! Historic Fort Conde The current Fort Condé, about 1/3 of the original fort recreated in 4/5-scale, opened on July 4, 1976 as part of Mobile’s United States bicentennial celebration. Fort Condé protected Mobile and its citizens for nearly 100 years from 1723- 1820. It was built by the French as a defense against British and Spanish attack on the strategic location of Mobile and its Bay, the eastern most part of the Louisiana colony. The military importance of Mobile and Fort Condé was huge. The fort and town protected access into the strategic lands between the Mississippi River and the Atlantic colonies along the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers. Mardi Gras Museum The Mobile Carnival Museum highlights Mardi Gras in Mobile - both the regal and raucous sides. The museum boasts 14 galleries and 5 video presentations. Experience royalty in a restored mansion - majestic crowns, scepters, and bejeweled roes. Get rowdy in the Den with a behind the mask view of the street party. Climb aboard a rocking floor and throw beads to a cheering crowd. Youth can become a costumed masker in the Little Mystics Den. USS Alabama Battleship and Memorial Park The USS Alabama, docked here in Mobile, was launched in 1942 and decommissioned in 1947. The decks, turrets, mess, berth compartments, bridge, wardroom and captain's cabin of the USS Alabama are open for tours. The park also contains an impressive collection of aircraft and military equipment from the Vietnam, Korean, and Cold War Eras, including a Boeing B-52 bomber. The Battleship Memorial Park is dedicated to Alabama veterans who served from WW II to Operation Desert Storm.
