ABOUT OUR AREA:

CLIMATE: Mobile boasts a semi-tropical climate with Gulf breezes allowing warm summer days and mild winters. It is muggy more often than not and showers should be anticipated every summer afternoon. Freezing temperatures are not recorded every winter but with the humid atmosphere, cold weather can feel very cold. Average temperatures range from 40° to 60° in January; 57° to 79° in April; 73° to 91° in July; and 69° to 87° in September. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 with most of the activity between August 15 and September 30.

DRESS: Bring light-weight, cool, loose-fitting clothing during the summer. Bring clothing for cold to mild weather during the winter as temperatures can change drastically from day to day Casual clothing is worn year round but some of the finer restau- rant require a coat and tie for dinner.

DRINKING: The legal drinking age is 21. Closing times vary widely from bar to bar and day to day. Consult your directory for information on individual bars. Many of our bars are “private” clubs, so you may be asked to fill out a membership card. The Downtown Mobile Alliance is a non-profit membership organization representing businesses and organizations in creat- ing and sustaining exposure for the downtown business district through marketing, advocacy and the management of BID Services. The Alliance is committed to fostering a vibrant, diverse and economically sustainable community for those who live, work and play in Downtown Mobile. Our programs are funded solely by our members and the advertisers in this Guide. The Alliance also manages the nonprofit Main Street Mobile, which continually works for “a more beautiful and vital” downtown through its philanthropic efforts.

SERVICES OF THE “BID”

Our Business Improvement District (BID) “Clean, Safe, and Beautiful” services are funded by property owners in a 75 block area of Downtown Mobile. Our Crewe of Stewards has been established by the property owners to maintain the appearance of the BID, so as to present a consistently clean, orderly, and beautiful space for all resi- dents and visitors. The Crewe of Regents has been established by the property owners to provide residents and visitors with on-demand assistance in the form of motorist aid, visitor information, and regular patrols of our district. They offer a friendly, informed presence to pedestrians and workers.

Should you be in need of any BID Services, just dial 251-327-SAFE (7233) Downtown Mobile Bicycle Rental Program

Exploring downtown is way cooler at 10 miles an hour! You have the opportunity to do so through the Downtown Mobile Bicycle Rental Program. The program is possible through a partnership between Regions and the Downtown Mobile Alliance. The bank has provided ten of its iconic green bicycles for the rental pro- gram that operates out of the Urban Emporium, Mobile’s retail incubator. The Urban Emporium is located at 260 Dauphin Street and bikes will be available during regular retail hours: Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to 6 pm. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bicycles may be rented for a minimum of two hours and a maximum of eight hours; the rates below include a helmet, basket (for shop- ping, of course) and lock: • 2 hours: $14 • 4 hours: $20 • 8 hours: $30

The Urban Emporium is Mobile's retail incubator, a project of the non-profit Springboard to Success. The Urban Emporium was established in 2011 to reinvigorate Downtown Mobile's retail scene by creating a low barrier to entry into the marketplace. By providing an environment where staffing, a point-of-sale system and educational support are provided, the UE offers the ideal opportunity for aspiring or expanding retailers to test the down- town market. If you're interested in joining the successful tenants at the UE (some of whom have already gone on to open independ- ent storefronts), please contact Kati Lovvorn at 251-441-8044. You can also help by donating to Springboard to Success, the 501(c)3 whose mission is to provide a supportive and educational environment for independent retailers in Mobile. Contact Fred Rendfrey at 251-434-8498 if you would like to help.
